Phase space polarization and the topological string: a case study
We review and elaborate on our discussion in hep-th/0606112 on the interplay
between the target space and the worldsheet description of the open topological
string partition function, for the example of the conifold. We discuss the
appropriate phase space and canonical form for the system. We find a map
between choices of polarization and the worldsheet description, based on which
we study the behavior of the partition function under canonical
transformations.Comment: 18 pages, invited review for MPL
Vortex density spectrum of quantum turbulence
The fluctuations of the vortex density in a turbulent quantum fluid are
deduced from local second-sound attenuation measurements. These measurements
are performed with a micromachined open-cavity resonator inserted across a flow
of turbulent He-II near 1.6 K. The power spectrum of the measured vortex line
density is compatible with a (-5/3) power law. The physical interpretation,
still open, is discussed.Comment: Submitted to Europhys. Let
Large space system: Charged particle environment interaction technology
Large, high voltage space power systems are proposed for future space missions. These systems must operate in the charged-particle environment of space and interactions between this environment and the high voltage surfaces are possible. Ground simulation testing indicated that dielectric surfaces that usually surround biased conductors can influence these interactions. For positive voltages greater than 100 volts, it has been found that the dielectrics contribute to the current collection area. For negative voltages greater than-500 volts, the data indicates that the dielectrics contribute to discharges. A large, high-voltage power system operating in geosynchronous orbit was analyzed. Results of this analysis indicate that very strong electric fields exist in these power systems
The Interstellar Medium of IRAS 08572+3915 NW: H3+ and Warm High Velocity CO
We confirm the first detection of the molecular ion H3+ in an extragalactic
object, the highly obscured ultraluminous galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 NW. We also
have detected absorption lines of the fundamental band of CO in this galaxy.
The CO absorption consists of a cold component close to the systemic velocity
and warm, highly blueshifted and redshifted components. The warm blueshifted
component is remarkably strong and broad and extends at least to -350 km/s.
Some analogies can be drawn between the H3+ and cold CO in IRAS08572+3915 NW
and the same species seen toward the Galactic center. The profiles of the warm
CO components are not those expected from a dusty torus of the type thought to
obscure active galactic nuclei. They are probably formed close to the dust
continuum surface near the buried and active nucleus and are probably
associated with an unusual and energetic event there.Comment: 21 pages, 4 postscript figures, accepted by Ap
6J Symbols Duality Relations
It is known that the Fourier transformation of the square of (6j) symbols has
a simple expression in the case of su(2) and U_q(su(2)) when q is a root of
unit. The aim of the present work is to unravel the algebraic structure behind
these identities. We show that the double crossproduct construction H_1\bowtie
H_2 of two Hopf algebras and the bicrossproduct construction H_2^{*}\lrbicross
H_1 are the Hopf algebras structures behind these identities by analysing
different examples. We study the case where D= H_1\bowtie H_2 is equal to the
group algebra of ISU(2), SL(2,C) and where D is a quantum double of a finite
group, of SU(2) and of U_q(su(2)) when q is real.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figure
Mechanically-Induced Transport Switching Effect in Graphene-based Nanojunctions
We report a theoretical study suggesting a novel type of electronic switching
effect, driven by the geometrical reconstruction of nanoscale graphene-based
junctions. We considered junction struc- tures which have alternative
metastable configurations transformed by rotations of local carbon dimers. The
use of external mechanical strain allows a control of the energy barrier
heights of the potential profiles and also changes the reaction character from
endothermic to exothermic or vice-versa. The reshaping of the atomic details of
the junction encode binary electronic ON or OFF states, with ON/OFF
transmission ratio that can reach up to 10^4-10^5. Our results suggest the
possibility to design modern logical switching devices or mechanophore sensors,
monitored by mechanical strain and structural rearrangements.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
