A Hazards Model Study of Pathway Analysis in Engineering Factors that indicate, explain, or predict if a student will persist or exit an engineering degree have been a subject of a lot of research in engineering education. Findings from these studies identify factors that lead to success or barriers that lead premature exit from an engineering degree; however, they often focus on students who matriculate into engineering or analyze students once they have matriculated into engineering. We propose studying an alternate pathway, students who switch into engineering from other majors. Examining alternate pathways may yield a fuller picture of the ways into and through engineering degrees and may be leveraged through different institutional policies and programs for attracting engineering students from other fields.Survival analysis is a longitudinal statistical method used to model the hazard or risk of an event occurring for some population. Our study implemented discrete survival analysis and a subset of a database comprising more than 1,000,000 unique students. For our current research, we use a sample population of first-time in college (FTIC) students initially matriculating into non-engineering disciplines in two years with population of ~55,000 at nine institutions. The event of interest is switching into engineering, and time is measured by terms. To better understand the dynamics of “attraction” into engineering we also run similar analyses with Science, Technology and Math (as a similar comparator) and Social Science (as a dissimilar comparator). Survival analysis results allow us to graph the term by term hazard or risk of attraction into engineering(and the comparators) as well as the “survival” rate in the pool of individuals who have not experienced the event, providing us insights into the relative attraction rates of engineering contrasted with other disciplines. Our preliminary results show that the attraction (hazard) rates for engineering are lower than both STM and social science attraction rates; furthermore, the pool of students who abstain from switching is greatest for engineering, and significantly less for STM and social science. Thus engineering has the lowest attraction rates and the highest abstention (which would be viewed as retention from their current department) rates. Interestingly, the hazard rate displays a similar pattern for all three groups, peaking at semester four and dropping markedly after semester six.In the full study, we also plan to examine if attraction and abstention rates differ by gender and ethnicity across engineering and the comparators. These findings agree with other studies using the same database, which gives confidence in the model. The unique contribution of this work will be findings regarding the switching population that yield insight into those students and related insights regarding the students who matriculate in engineering

Smart battery pack for electric vehicles based on active balancing with wireless communication feedback

    Get PDF
In this paper, the concept of smart battery pack is introduced. The smart battery pack is based on wireless feedback from individual battery cells and is capable to be applied to electric vehicle applications. The proposed solution increases the usable capacity and prolongs the life cycle of the batteries by directly integrating the battery management system in the battery pack. The battery cells are connected through half-bridge chopper circuits, which allow either the insertion or the bypass of a single cell depending on the current states of charge. This consequently leads to the balancing of the whole pack during both the typical charging and discharging time of an electric vehicle and enables the fault-tolerant operation of the pack. A wireless feedback for implementing the balancing method is proposed. This solution reduces the need for cabling and simplifies the assembling of the battery pack, making also possible a direct off-board diagnosis. The paper validates the proposed smart battery pack and the wireless feedback through simulations and experimental results by adopting a battery cell emulator

New Converter Solution with a Compact Modular Multilevel Structure Suitable for High-Power Medium-Voltage Wind Turbines

    Get PDF
Modern wind turbines with increasing power levels are continuously emerging. These power levels are reaching a point where excessively high currents are obtained if the traditional low-voltage wind-turbine structure is adopted. High currents lead to excessively high losses and the need for bulky and heavy conductors to carry them. A medium-voltage structure should be a more competitive alternative to be adopted in high-power wind turbines. In this paper, a new converter solution with a modular multilevel structure suitable for driving modern/future high-power medium-voltage wind turbines is proposed. This converter topology has desirable features common to modular multilevel converters such as the improved reliability at high voltage levels, and the possibility to synthesize high-power-quality staircase-shape voltages, which leads to low requirements for harmonic and dvdt\frac{dv}{dt} filters. Furthermore, the proposed converter presents reduced capacitance and inductance requirements compared to other well-established modular multilevel converter topologies, which should result in a lighter and more compact solution. The proposed solution could potentially allow for the reduction of the overall costs of the supporting structure required to withstand the weight of the wind turbine. Simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper to validate the proposed topology

Dispatchable High-Power Wind Turbine Based on a Multilevel Converter with Modular Structure and Hybrid Energy Storage Integration

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new multilevel converter solution with modular structure and hybrid energy-storage integration suitable to drive modern/future high-power medium-voltage wind turbines. The hybrid energy-storage integration means that part of the converter submodules are built with batteries and part of them with conventional capacitors. Since traditional wind turbines are non-dispatchable generators, the integration of an energy storage system could be beneficial in multiple ways as the wind power plant could provide stability support to the grid, improvement of the unit commitment and economic dispatch, and the power plant owner could increase his revenues in the electricity market. The capacitors of the proposed converter are responsible to transfer the power produced by the wind turbine to the grid, and the batteries are only charged/discharged with the mismatch between the power produced by the turbine and the power to be injected into the grid, considering a dispatchable operation where the power injected into the grid is different from the power generated by the turbine. The medium-voltage structure could be an interesting option to overcome problems related to high currents in modern/future high-power wind turbines resulting in more efficient, more compact and lighter solutions. Modular multilevel converters are suitable to handle medium-voltage levels and they allow for a straightforward integration of energy storage systems in a decentralized manner

Leading and higher twists in the proton polarized structure function at large Bjorken x

A phenomenological parameterization of the proton polarized structure function has been developed for x > 0.02 using deep inelastic data up to ~ 50 (GeV/c)**2 as well as available experimental results on both photo- and electro-production of proton resonances. According to the new parameterization the generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule is predicted to have a zero-crossing point at Q**2 = 0.16 +/- 0.04 (GeV/c)**2. Then, low-order polarized Nachtmann moments have been estimated and their Q**2-behavior has been investigated in terms of leading and higher twists for Q**2 > 1 (GeV/c)**2. The leading twist has been treated at NLO in the strong coupling constant and the effects of higher orders of the perturbative series have been estimated using soft-gluon resummation techniques. In case of the first moment higher-twist effects are found to be quite small for Q**2 > 1 (GeV/c)**2, and the singlet axial charge has been determined to be a0[10 (GeV/c)**2] = 0.16 +/- 0.09. In case of higher order moments, which are sensitive to the large-x region, higher-twist effects are significantly reduced by the introduction of soft gluon contributions, but they are still relevant at Q**2 ~ few (GeV/c)**2 at variance with the case of the unpolarized transverse structure function of the proton. Our finding suggests that spin-dependent correlations among partons may have more impact than spin-independent ones. As a byproduct, it is also shown that the Bloom-Gilman local duality is strongly violated in the region of polarized electroproduction of the Delta(1232) resonance.Comment: revised version to appear in Phys. Design and in-house validation of a portable system for the determination of free acidity in virgin olive oil

Nutritional and healthy values are well known properties of virgin olive oil (VOO). The product quality, in terms of belonging to a specific quality grade (extra virgin, virgin, lampante), is defined by a set of chemical-physical and sensory measurements. According to the official regulation of the European Union (EU Reg. 1348/2013)the free acidity is the first parameter that has to be determined by analysts; it gives information about the quality of the olives used to produce the VOO as well as the hydrolytic state of VOO just produced and stored. The official procedure is based on an acid-base titration that needs to be carried out in a chemical laboratory. In this paper a portable battery-operated electronic system to measure olive oil free acidity is presented: the system can be used for quick \u201cin situ\u201d tests in a production environment (olive oil mills or packaging centers)by people without particular training. The working principle of the system is based on the creation of an emulsion between oil and a hydroalcoholic solution: the free acidity is estimated on the value of the emulsion electrical conductance. The proposed system has been calibrated and in-house validated showing good results in terms of limit of detection and quantification, precision and accuracy. Moreover, a good correlation (R 2adj = 0.97)with free acidity data obtained applying the official method on 30 olive oil samples belonging to different commercial categories (extra virgin, virgin and lampante olive oil)has been evidenced

The Effects of Resonant Tunneling on Magnetoresistance through a Q uantum Dot

The effect of resonant tunneling on magnetoresistance (MR) is studied theoretically in a double junction system. We have found that the ratio of the MR of the resonant peak current is reduced more than that of the single junction, whereas that of the valley current is enhanced depending on the change of the discrete energy-level under the change of magnetic field. We also found that the peak current-valley current (PV) ratio decreases when the junction conductance increases.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures(mail if you need), use revtex.st

Mott Transition in the A15 Phase of Cs3C60 : Absence of a Pseudogap and Charge Order

    Get PDF
We present a detailed NMR study of the insulator-to-metal transition induced by an applied pressure p in the A15 phase of Cs3C60. We evidence that the insulating antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) phases coexist only in a narrow p range. At fixed p, in the metallic state above the SC transition T-c, the Cs-133 and C-13 NMR spin-lattice relaxation data are seemingly governed by a pseudogaplike feature. We prove that this feature, also seen in the (CsNMR)-Cs-133 shift data, is rather a signature of the Mott transition which broadens and smears out progressively for increasing (p,T). The analysis of the variation of the quadrupole splitting nu(Q) of the Cs-133 NMR spectrum precludes any cell symmetry change at the Mott transition and only monitors a weak variation of the lattice parameter. These results open an opportunity to consider theoretically the Mott transition in a multiorbital three-dimensional system well beyond its critical point.Peer reviewe

Dynamic instabilities in resonant tunneling induced by a magnetic field

We show that the addition of a magnetic field parallel to the current induces self sustained intrinsic current oscillations in an asymmetric double barrier structure. The oscillations are attributed to the nonlinear dynamic coupling of the current to the charge trapped in the well, and the effect of the external field over the local density of states across the system. Our results show that the system bifurcates as the field is increased, and may transit to chaos at large enough fields.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev. Letter
