A simple technique for high resolution time domain phase noise measurement

    Get PDF
A new time domain phase comparator is described. The device uses a novel technique to allow time domain phase measurements to be made with period and time interval counters without the use of offset reference oscillators. The device uses a single reference oscillator and allows measurements with a phase resolution greater than the noise floor of the reference. Data is presented showing a phase resolution of 0.02ps at 5 MHz with a crystal reference. The device has application in measuring the phase stability of systems where approximate phase quadrature can be maintained

Dynamical studies of macroscopic superposition states: Phase engineering of controlled entangled number states of Bose-Einstein condensate in multiple wells

We provide a scheme for the generation of entangled number states of Bose-Einstein condensates in multiple wells with cyclic pairwise connectivity. The condensate ground state in a multiple well trap can self-evolve, when phase engineered with specific initial phase differences between the neighboring wells, to a macroscopic superposition state with controllable entanglement -- to multiple well generalization of double well NOON states. We demonstrate through numerical simulations the creation of entangled states in three and four wells and then explore the creation of "larger" entangled states where there are either a larger number of particles in each well or a larger number of wells. The type of entanglement produced as the particle numbers, or interaction strength, increases changes in a novel and initially unexpected manner.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure

    Scale Anomaly Induced Instanton Interaction

    Get PDF
The binary interaction of large size instantons in a SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is obtained from the one-loop effective action for the field strength. The instanton interaction is calculated as a function of the instanton separation and in dependence on radius and relative orientation of the instantons. Two equally oriented instantons with radii large compared with the scale defined by the gluon condensate have purely attractive interaction, whereas the interaction of maximal disoriented instantons is repulsive. We argue that the medium range attractive interaction of the instantons generally holds and is solely due to the instability of the perturbative vacuum.Comment: 11 LaTex pages (3 figures available on request), in press by Physics Letters B, UNITUE-THEP-4-199
