Magnetic Monopoles in Field Theory and Cosmology
The existence of magnetic monopoles is predicted by many theories of particle
physics beyond the Standard Model. However, in spite of extensive searches,
there is no experimental or observational sign of them. I review the role of
magnetic monopoles in quantum field theory and discuss their implications for
particle physics and cosmology. I also highlight their differences and
similarities with monopoles found in frustrated magnetic systems, and discuss
how experiments carried out in these systems could help us understand the

Educational studies of cosmic rays with telescope of Geiger-Muller counters
A group of high school students (XII Liceum) in the framework of the Roland
Maze Project has built a compact telescope of three Geiger-Muller counters. The
connection between the telescope and PC computer was also created and programed
by students involved in the Project. This has allowed students to use their
equipment to perform serious scientific measurements concerning the single
cosmic ray muon flux at ground level and below. These measurements were then
analyzed with the programs based on the 'nowadays' knowledge on statistics. An
overview of the apparatus, methods and results were presented at several
students conferences and recently won the first prize in a national competition
of high school students scientific work. The telescope itself, in spite of its
'scientific' purposes, is built in such a way that it is hung on a wall in a
school physics lab and counts muons continuously. This can help to raise the
interest for studying physics among others. At present a few (3) groups of
young participants of the Roland Maze Project have already built their own
telescopes for their schools and some others are working on it. This work is a
perfect example of what can be done by young people when respective
opportunities are created by more experienced researchers and a little help and

Shared goals for mental health research: what, why and when for the 2020s
Mental health problems bring substantial individual, community and societal costs and the need for innovation to promote good mental health and to prevent and treat mental health problems has never been greater. However, we know that research findings can take up to 20 years to implement. One way to push the pace is to focus researchers and funders on shared, specific goals and targets. We describe a consultation process organised by the Department of Health and Social Care and convened by the Chief Medical Officer to consider high level goals for future research efforts and to begin to identify UK-specific targets to measure research impact. The process took account of new scientific methods and evidence, the UK context with a universal health care system (the NHS) and the embedded research support from the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network, as well as the views of individual service users and service user organisations. The result of the consultation is a set of four overarching goals with the potential to be measured at intervals of three, five or ten years
Search for Intermediate Mass Magnetic Monopoles and Nuclearites with the SLIM experiment
SLIM is a large area experiment (440 m2) installed at the Chacaltaya cosmic
ray laboratory since 2001, and about 100 m2 at Koksil, Himalaya, since 2003. It
is devoted to the search for intermediate mass magnetic monopoles (107-1013
GeV/c2) and nuclearites in the cosmic radiation using stacks of CR39 and
Makrofol nuclear track detectors. In four years of operation it will reach a
sensitivity to a flux of about 10-15 cm-2 s-1 sr-1. We present the results of
the calibration of CR39 and Makrofol and the analysis of a first sample of the

Readmission after discharge from acute mental healthcare among 231 988 people in England: cohort study exploring predictors of readmission including availability of acute day units in local areas
Background:
In the UK, acute mental healthcare is provided by in-patient wards and crisis resolution teams. Readmission to acute care following discharge is common. Acute day units (ADUs) are also provided in some areas.
Aims:
To assess predictors of readmission to acute mental healthcare following discharge in England, including availability of ADUs.
Method:
We enrolled a national cohort of adults discharged from acute mental healthcare in the English National Health Service (NHS) between 2013 and 2015, determined the risk of readmission to either in-patient or crisis teams, and used multivariable, multilevel logistic models to evaluate predictors of readmission.
Results:
Of a total of 231 998 eligible individuals discharged from acute mental healthcare, 49 547 (21.4%) were readmitted within 6 months, with a median time to readmission of 34 days (interquartile range 10–88 days). Most variation in readmission (98%) was attributable to individual patient-level rather than provider (trust)-level effects (2.0%). Risk of readmission was not associated with local availability of ADUs (adjusted odds ratio 0.96, 95% CI 0.80–1.15). Statistically significant elevated risks were identified for participants who were female, older, single, from Black or mixed ethnic groups, or from more deprived areas. Clinical predictors included shorter index admission, psychosis and being an in-patient at baseline.
Conclusions:
Relapse and readmission to acute mental healthcare are common following discharge and occur early. Readmission was not influenced significantly by trust-level variables including availability of ADUs. More support for relapse prevention and symptom management may be required following discharge from acute mental healthcare
A comparison of clinical outcomes, service satisfaction and well-being in people using acute day units and crisis resolution teams: cohort study in England.
BACKGROUND: For people in mental health crisis, acute day units (ADUs) provide daily structured sessions and peer support in non-residential settings, often as an addition or alternative to crisis resolution teams (CRTs). There is little recent evidence about outcomes for those using ADUs, particularly compared with those receiving CRT care alone. AIMS: We aimed to investigate readmission rates, satisfaction and well-being outcomes for people using ADUs and CRTs. METHOD: We conducted a cohort study comparing readmission to acute mental healthcare during a 6-month period for ADU and CRT participants. Secondary outcomes included satisfaction (Client Satisfaction Questionnaire), well-being (Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale) and depression (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale). RESULTS: We recruited 744 participants (ADU: n = 431, 58%; CRT: n = 312, 42%) across four National Health Service trusts/health regions. There was no statistically significant overall difference in readmissions: 21% of ADU participants and 23% of CRT participants were readmitted over 6 months (adjusted hazard ratio 0.78, 95% CI 0.54-1.14). However, readmission results varied substantially by setting. At follow-up, ADU participants had significantly higher Client Satisfaction Questionnaire scores (2.5, 95% CI 1.4-3.5, P < 0.001) and well-being scores (1.3, 95% CI 0.4-2.1, P = 0.004), and lower depression scores (-1.7, 95% CI -2.7 to -0.8, P < 0.001), than CRT participants. CONCLUSIONS: Patients who accessed ADUs demonstrated better outcomes for satisfaction, well-being and depression, and no significant differences in risk of readmission, compared with those who only used CRTs. Given the positive outcomes for patients, and the fact that ADUs are inconsistently provided in the National Health Service, their value and place in the acute care pathway needs further consideration and research
An Updated Description of Heavy-Hadron Interactions in Geant-4
Exotic stable massive particles (SMP) are proposed in a number of scenarios
of physics beyond the Standard Model. It is important that LHC experiments are
able both to detect and extract the quantum numbers of any SMP with masses
around the TeV scale. To do this, an understanding of the interactions of SMPs
in matter is required. In this paper a Regge-based model of R-hadron scattering
is extended and implemented in Geant-4. In addition, the implications of
-hadron scattering for collider searches are discussed

The evolution of community peer support values: reflections from three UK mental health project teams: The McPin peer support evaluation writing collaborative
OBJECTIVE:
To explore emergent values for community-based peer support in three projects and use of peer research methodology.
BACKGROUND:
Peer support refers to the support people with shared lived experiences provide to each other. Its roots are in the civil rights movement, providing alternatives to clinical treatments. This method of support is delivered in different settings, with varying degrees of structure. In this paper, it includes shared experience of mental health issues.
METHODS:
We reviewed interview data from two evaluations and one development project - mental health (n = 69), women-only (n = 40), and maternal mental health (n = 24), respectively. Each project used peer research methods. Peer support values from each project were compared, along with reflections from mostly peer researchers who worked on them (n = 11).
RESULTS:
Six peer support values emerged and were found to be identifiable and applicable in different contexts. Decisions on facilitation and leadership varied across projects and generated some concerns over professionalisation, including non-peer leadership. Frameworks were viewed as broadly useful, but peer support is heterogenous, and peer researchers were concerned about over-rigid application of guidance.
DISCUSSION:
We propose caution applying frameworks for peer support. Values must remain flexible and peer-led, evolving in new contexts such as COVID-19. Evaluators have a responsibility to consider any potentially negative consequences of their work and mitigate them. This means ensuring research outputs are useful to the peer support community, and knowledge production is based upon methodologies, such as peer research, that complement and are consistent with the values of peer support itself
Looking for magnetic monopoles at LHC with diphoton events
Magnetic monopoles have been a subject of interest since Dirac established
the relation between the existence of monopoles and charge quantization. The
intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. The
Large Hadron Collider is reaching energies never achieved before allowing the
search for exotic particles in the TeV mass range. In a continuing effort to
discover these rare particles we propose here other ways to detect them. We
study the observability of monopoles and monopolium, a monopole-antimonopole
bound state, at the Large Hadron Collider in the channel for
monopole masses in the range 500-1000 GeV. We conclude that LHC is an ideal
machine to discover monopoles with masses below 1 TeV at present running
energies and with 5 fb of integrated luminosity.Comment: This manuscript contains information appeared in Looking for magnetic
