Studies of some unconventional systems for solving various landing problems
Solutions to various landing problems were obtained through unconventional systems. The first, of these is the air cushion landing system, where efforts were concentrated on development of adequate braking and steering systems and an improved understanding of scaling laws and behavior. The second was concentrated on use of a wire brush skid as a drag producing device, which was shown to have good friction coefficients and reasonable wear rates at ground bearing pressures up to 689 kPa and forward speeds up to 80 km/hr. The third showed great promise in an active control landing gear where significant load reductions were possible during landing impact and subsequent rollout

Comparison of Driver Distraction Evaluations across Two Simulator Platforms and an Instrumented Vehicle
The purpose of this work was to assess the cross-platform validity of two driving simulators and an instrumented vehicle operated on a closed driving course. Characteristics of vehicle speed and performance to an Alert Response Task were evaluated using a MiniSim, manufactured by the National Advanced Driving Simulator group, a Realtime Technologies, Inc. desktop simulator, and an instrumented 2005 Toyota Highlander. Results indicate a high degree of relative validity between the three research platforms with mean and standard deviation of vehicle speeds showing near identical patterns under various secondary task demands. Performance on an auditory Alert Response Task also showed a high degree of consistency across the three research platforms. Performance on a visual Alert Response Task appeared to be highly reactive with the testing conditions present in the instrumented vehicle evaluations. These data have practical implications for the use of driving simulators in experimentally controlled research and also make suggestions about the use of visual warnings to elicit emergency response behaviors in drivers

Chromosome Organization in Meiosis
Our objective is to understand the mechanics of homologous chromosome pairing during meiosis. Aberrant pairing can result in nondisjunction and birth defects in humans.
This study used yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with chromosomally‐integrated arrays of tetO operators that bind TetR repressor proteins fused to GFP to produce a fluorescent signal. In diploid cells, the tetO/TetR‐GFP system allows homologous chromosomes to be identified as two foci (unpaired) or one focus (paired) as they progress through meiosis. We conducted three replicate
timecourse experiments, analysing three different stages of meiosis, t=0 hours: pre‐meiotic, t=3 hours: pairing transition, and t=5 hours: synapsis. At each stage, the cells were imaged for 25 minutes, with z‐stacks taken at 30 second intervals. To analyse individual cells, we developed a 4D image analysis pipeline in MATLAB that allowed us to calculate the mean squared change in distance (MSCD), a metric describing the distance between two foci, and analyse deviations from normal diffusive motion
New Young Star Candidates in BRC 27 and BRC 34
We used archival Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data to search for
young stellar objects (YSOs) in the immediate vicinity of two bright-rimmed
clouds, BRC 27 (part of CMa R1) and BRC 34 (part of the IC 1396 complex). These
regions both appear to be actively forming young stars, perhaps triggered by
the proximate OB stars. In BRC 27, we find clear infrared excesses around 22 of
the 26 YSOs or YSO candidates identified in the literature, and identify 16 new
YSO candidates that appear to have IR excesses. In BRC 34, the one
literature-identified YSO has an IR excess, and we suggest 13 new YSO
candidates in this region, including a new Class I object. Considering the
entire ensemble, both BRCs are likely of comparable ages, within the
uncertainties of small number statistics and without spectroscopy to confirm or
refute the YSO candidates. Similarly, no clear conclusions can yet be drawn

Three-dimensional modeling of acoustic backscattering from fluid-like zooplankton

In this work, an acoustic scattering model has been developed for fluid-like zooplankton that is based on the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) and that makes use of high-resolution three-dimensional measurements of the animal's outer boundary shape. High-resolution computerized tomography (CT) was used to determine the three-dimensional digitizations of animal shape. This study focuses on developing the methodology for incorporating high-resolution CT scans into a scattering model that is generally valid for any body with fluid-like material properties. The model predictions are compared to controlled laboratory measurements of the acoustic backscattering from live individual decapod shrimp. The frequency range used was 50 kHz to 1 MHz and the angular characteristics of the backscattering were investigated with up to a 1° angular resolution. The practical conditions under which it is necessary to make use of high-resolution digitizations of shape are assessed.This work was supported
