    A Parity Invariant Regularization in 3-D Quantum Electrodynamics

    Inferential tests and modelling of functional trait convergence along environmental gradients

    The motivation for this paper comes from a recent study which indicated that the influence of environmental filtering should increase with decreasing soil fertility, based on the premise that individuals will employ a resource-retentive strategy in a less productive ecosystem. Mean annual temperature (MAT) is one indicator of the productivity of the ecosystem. We aim to build a more accurate model of environmental filter and want to statistically test whether the environmental filter is stronger when the MAT is lower compared to when it is higher. Our findings throw an interesting insight into how the trait variability changes as a function of MAT and how it could be better modelled

    An Examination of Differences Between Occupational-Technical Student and Transfer Student Engagement at Small Community Colleges in Virginia

    This study examined the differences in levels of student engagement between occupational-technical students and transfer students in an attempt to gain insight into why so many students fail to attain their educational goals. Students\u27 engagement or involvement with their educational institution and program of study is considered a major contributor to persistence and graduation. Research on student engagement as it relates to persisters and leavers includes the five student engagement variables benchmarked by the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE): (a) active and collaborative learning, (b) student effort, (c) academic challenge, (d) student-faculty interaction, and (e) support for learners. Using the results of The Community College Student Report (CCSR) 2005 questionnaire developed by CCSSE, this study confirmed previous research on differences in demographic characteristics and risk factors between occupational-technical students and transfer students. The study also revealed differences in overall student engagement, and determined how occupational-technical students and transfer students engaged differently with their institutions on each of the five student engagement variables benchmarked by CCSSE. In fact, findings showed that occupational-technical students and transfer students differed significantly in their levels of engagement on all of the student engagement variables except one, student-faculty interaction. Additionally, students\u27 intention to persist differed between occupational-technical program majors and transfer program majors, and the relationship between the student engagement variables and students\u27 intention to persist also differed between occupational-technical students and transfer students. The multifaceted nature of student engagement, coupled with the tremendous diversity of community college students, provides a prolific field for further exploration. While much of the research on student engagement and on the variables benchmarked by CCSSE has been conducted with students in four-year institutions, the results of this study reiterate the need for community colleges to disaggregate the data and learn more specifically how different groups of students engage differently and are impacted by the total college environment. The need to develop appropriate, intentional interventions to improve the retention and graduation rates of community college students compels educators to conduct further research

    Complex order parameter symmetry and thermal conductivity

    Thermal behaviour of superconductors with complex order parameter symmetry is studied within a weak coupling theory. It is shown numerically, that the thermal nature of the different components of complex order parametrs are qualitatively different. Within the complex order parameter scenario, the recent experimental observations by Krishna {\it et al.}, [Science {\bf 277}, 83 (1997)] on magnetothermal conductivity and by J.     Pairing via Index theorem

    This work is motivated by a specific point of view: at short distances and high energies the undoped and underdoped cuprates resemble the π\pi-flux phase of the t-J model. The purpose of this paper is to present a mechanism by which pairing grows out of the doped π\pi-flux phase. According to this mechanism pairing symmetry is determined by a parameter controlling the quantum tunneling of gauge flux quanta. For zero tunneling the symmetry is dx2y2+idxyd_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}, while for large tunneling it is dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}. A zero-temperature critical point separates these two limits

    Hierarchy wave functions--from conformal correlators to Tao-Thouless states

    Laughlin's wave functions, describing the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factors ν=1/(2k+1)\nu=1/(2k+1), can be obtained as correlation functions in conformal field theory, and recently this construction was extended to Jain's composite fermion wave functions at filling factors ν=n/(2kn+1)\nu=n/(2kn+1). Here we generalize this latter construction and present ground state wave functions for all quantum Hall hierarchy states that are obtained by successive condensation of quasielectrons (as opposed to quasiholes) in the original hierarchy construction. By considering these wave functions on a cylinder, we show that they approach the exact ground states, the Tao-Thouless states, when the cylinder becomes thin. We also present wave functions for the multi-hole states, make the connection to Wen's general classification of abelian quantum Hall fluids, and discuss whether the fractional statistics of the quasiparticles can be analytically determined. Finally we discuss to what extent our wave functions can be described in the language of composite fermions.Comment: 9 page

    We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau level like energy spectrum.     Failure Analysis of PHILOS Plate Construct Used for Pantalar Arthrodesis Paper II-Screws and FEM Simulations

    A fractured stainless steel 3.5 mm proximal humerus internal locking system (PHILOS) plate and screws were investigated in this paper. This plate was used for ankle arthrodesis of a 68-year-old female with a right ankle deformity. Both the plate and screws were considered in this investigation. Optical and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) were used to document fracture surface characteristics, such as extensive scratching, plastic deformation, rubbed surfaces, discoloration, and pitting, along with cleavage, secondary cracking, deposits of debris, striations, and dimples. Indications of these features show that the plate failed by corrosion fatigue, however, overloading separated the screw(s) in two parts. Radiographic evidence shows that the screws failed ahead of the plate from the proximal end. Three-dimensional models of the plate and the screws: cortical, locking, and cannulated, were constructed using Solidworks and imported in ANSYS Workbench 16.2 to simulate the loading conditions and regions of stress development. Statistical analysis was conducted to understand the impact of different factors on the maximum von Mises stresses of the locking compression plate. These factors were the load, screw design pattern, coefficient of friction between the plate and screws, and cortical screw displacement. In summary, the finite element simulation of the plate validates the fractographic examination results. The following observations were made: (a) as the angle between the screws and the plates increased, the von Mises stresses increased in the cortical screws; and (b) the stress in the locking screws was lower than that of the cortical screws, which may be due to locking the screws with fixed angles onto the plate. Finally, fractographic examination of the cortical and locking screws supports the mechanism of corrosion-fatigue fracture from crack initiation sites, pits, due to the presence of inclusion bodies for this material (ASTM standards F138-03 and F139-03) documented for the plate in Paper I

    Analysis of a Clinically Failed, Mechanically Intact, Hemi-Toe Implant

    In this case study a clinically failed, mechanically intact, hemi-toe device was investigated. The clinical indication of the failure constitutes radiolucent line indicating loosening of the implant and possible interactions among the bone-implant initiated by osteolysis may become a factor, producing pain, inflammatory reactions, deformity and discomfort. The patient file was not available to determine these parameters. The device was titanium coated, Cobalt Chromium alloy used for making hemi-toe. Degeneration of hemi implant was due to spalling of the coating from the surface, causing loosening of stem from bone. However, pre-removal X-ray films were not available to confirm. Mechanism by which the clinical failure occurred likely due to lack of bony adhesion or other clinical reasons. Surface topographical features were documented using optical microscope. A method to classify various area of the articulating surface was proposed in this study that shows the anterior contacts were more damaging than the other areas where deeper scratches, pits and some debris were present. There is a need to converge mechanical and clinical failures together for these types of medical devices

    Dietary Patterns and Cognitive Function among Older Community-Dwelling Adults.

    Diet may be an important modifiable risk factor for maintenance of cognitive health in later life. This study aimed at examining associations between common dietary indices and dietary patterns defined by factor analysis and cognitive function in older community-dwelling adults. Dietary information for 1499 participants from the Rancho Bernardo Study was collected in 1988⁻1992 and used to calculate the alternate Mediterranean diet score, Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)-2010 score and factor scores derived from factor analysis of nutrients. Global cognitive function, executive function, verbal fluency and episodic memory were assessed at approximate four-year intervals from 1988⁻2016. Linear mixed models were used to examine associations between dietary patterns and cognitive trajectories. Estimates for the highest vs. lowest tertile in models adjusting for age, sex, education, energy intake, lifestyle variables and retest effect showed greater adherence to the Mediterranean score was associated with better baseline global cognitive function (β (95% CI) = 0.33 (0.11, 0.55)). The AHEI-2010 score was not significantly associated with cognitive performance. Higher loading on a plant polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)/vitamin E factor was associated with better baseline global cognitive function and executive function (β = 0.22 (0.02, 0.42) and β = -7.85 (-13.20, -2.47)). A sugar/low protein factor was associated with poorer baseline cognitive function across multiple domains. Dietary patterns were not associated with cognitive decline over time. Adherence to a healthy diet with foods high in PUFA and vitamin E and a low sugar to protein ratio, as typified by a Mediterranean diet, may be beneficial for cognitive health in late life
