Low-Mass Relics of Early Star Formation
The earliest stars to form in the Universe were the first sources of light,
heat and metals after the Big Bang. The products of their evolution will have
had a profound impact on subsequent generations of stars. Recent studies of
primordial star formation have shown that, in the absence of metals (elements
heavier than helium), the formation of stars with masses 100 times that of the
Sun would have been strongly favoured, and that low-mass stars could not have
formed before a minimum level of metal enrichment had been reached. The value
of this minimum level is very uncertain, but is likely to be between 10^{-6}
and 10^{-4} that of the Sun. Here we show that the recent discovery of the most
iron-poor star known indicates the presence of dust in extremely
low-metallicity gas, and that this dust is crucial for the formation of
lower-mass second-generation stars that could survive until today. The dust
provides a pathway for cooling the gas that leads to fragmentation of the
precursor molecular cloud into smaller clumps, which become the lower-mass

At what time does a quantum experiment have a result?
This paper provides a general method for defining a generalized quantum
observable (or POVM) that supplies properly normalized conditional
probabilities for the time of occurrence (i.e., of detection). This method
treats the time of occurrence as a probabilistic variable whose value is to be
determined by experiment and predicted by the Born rule. This avoids the
problematic assumption that a question about the time at which an event occurs
must be answered through instantaneous measurements of a projector by an
observer, common to both Rovelli (1998) and Oppenheim et al. (2000). I also
address the interpretation of experiments purporting to demonstrate the quantum
Zeno effect, used by Oppenheim et al. (2000) to justify an inherent uncertainty

Arabidopsis TAO1 is a TIR-NB-LRR protein that contributes to disease resistance induced by the Pseudomonas syringae effector AvrB
The type III effector protein encoded by avirulence gene B (AvrB) is delivered into plant cells by pathogenic strains of Pseudomonas syringae. There, it localizes to the plasma membrane and triggers immunity mediated by the Arabidopsis coiled-coil (CC)-nucleotide binding (NB)-leucine-rich repeat (LRR) disease resistance protein RPM1. The sequence unrelated type III effector avirulence protein encoded by avirulence gene Rpm1 (AvrRpm1) also activates RPM1. AvrB contributes to virulence after delivery from P. syringae in leaves of susceptible soybean plants, and AvrRpm1 does the same in Arabidopsis rpm1 plants. Conditional overexpression of AvrB in rpm1 plants results in leaf chlorosis. In a genetic screen for mutants that lack AvrB-dependent chlorosis in an rpm1 background, we isolated TAO1 (target of AvrB operation), which encodes a Toll-IL-1 receptor (TIR)-NB-LRR disease resistance protein. In rpm1 plants, TAO1 function results in the expression of the pathogenesis-related protein 1 (PR-1) gene, suggestive of a defense response. In RPM1 plants, TAO1 contributes to disease resistance in response to Pto (P. syringae pathovars tomato) DC3000(avrB), but not against Pto DC3000(avrRpm1). The tao1–5 mutant allele, a stop mutation in the LRR domain of TAO1, posttranscriptionally suppresses RPM1 accumulation. These data provide evidence of genetically separable disease resistance responses to AvrB and AvrRpm1 in Arabidopsis. AvrB activates both RPM1, a CC-NB-LRR protein, and TAO1, a TIR-NB-LRR protein. These NB-LRR proteins then act additively to generate a full disease resistance response to P. syringae expressing this type III effector
Resonance between Noise and Delay
We propose here a stochastic binary element whose transition rate depends on
its state at a fixed interval in the past. With this delayed stochastic
transition this is one of the simplest dynamical models under the influence of
``noise'' and ``delay''. We demonstrate numerically and analytically that we
can observe resonant phenomena between the oscillatory behavior due to noise

Characteristics of a Delayed System with Time-dependent Delay Time
The characteristics of a time-delayed system with time-dependent delay time
is investigated. We demonstrate the nonlinearity characteristics of the
time-delayed system are significantly changed depending on the properties of
time-dependent delay time and especially that the reconstructed phase
trajectory of the system is not collapsed into simple manifold, differently
from the delayed system with fixed delay time. We discuss the possibility of a

Relationship of ankle blood pressures to cardiovascular events in older adults.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE - Low values of ankle-arm systolic blood pressure ratio predict mortality and cardiovascular events. High values, associated with arterial calcification, also carry risk for mortality. We focus on the extent to which low and high ankle-arm index values as well as noncompressible arteries are associated with mortality and cardiovascular events, including stroke in older adults. METHODS - We followed 2886 adults aged 70 to 79 for a mean of 6.7 years for vital status and cardiovascular events (coronary heart disease, stroke, and congestive heart failure). RESULTS - Normal ankle-arm index values of 0.91 to 1.3 were found in 80%, low values of ≤0.9 were found in 13%, high values of >1.3 were obtained in 5%, and noncompressible arteries were found in 2% of the group. Increased mortality was associated with both low and high ankle-arm index values beginning at levels of <1.0 or ≥1.4. Subjects with low ankle-arm index values or noncompressible arteries had significantly higher event rates than those with normal ankle blood pressures for all end points. For coronary heart disease, hazard ratios associated with a low ankle-arm index, high ankle-arm index, and noncompressible arteries were 1.4, 1.5, and 1.7 (P<0.05 for all) after controlling for age, gender, race, prevalent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and major cardiovascular risk factors. Noncompressible arteries carried a particularly high risk of stroke and congestive heart failure (hazard ratio=2.1 and 2.4, respectively). CONCLUSIONS - Among older adults, low and high ankle-arm index values carry elevated risk for cardiovascular events. Noncompressible leg arteries carry elevated risk for stroke and congestive heart failure specifically. © 2008 American Heart Association, Inc

This conceptual paper argues for the value of an approach to privacy in the digital information environment informed by Luciano Floridi's philosophy of information and information ethics. This approach involves achieving informational privacy, through the features of anonymity and obscurity, through an optimal balance of ontological frictions. This approach may be used to modify models for information behavior and for information literacy, giving them a fuller and more effective coverage of privacy issues in the infosphere.
