Combined high vacuum/high frequency fatigue tester

    Get PDF
Apparatus permits application of significantly greater number of cycles or equivalent number of cycles in shorter time than conventional fatigue test machines. Environment eliminates problems associated with high temperature oxidation and with sensitivity of refractory alloy behavior to atmospheric contamination

Orbit-resolved photometry and echelle spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variable ST LMi during a 2007 high state

    Get PDF
We present high-resolution echelle spectra and contemporaneous photometry of the polar ST LMi during a high state in 2007 March. Emission lines at Hα, He I λ5876, and He I λ7065 show similar line profiles over orbital phase and have narrow and broad components. These profile changes with phase are very similar to those reported in earlier high-state studies of ST LMi. The radial velocity curves from double Gaussian fits to the line profiles are interpreted as two crossing curves, neither of which is coincident with the orbital motion of the secondary star. We attribute one component to infall motions near the white dwarf and the other to a gas streaming along magnetic field lines connecting the two stars

Spectroscopic and Photometric Analysis of the Nova-Like Cataclysmic Variable PG 1000+667: A New VY Sculptoris Star

    Get PDF
Multiyear photometry and orbit-resolved spectroscopy of the nova-like cataclysmic variable PG 1000+667 show behavior associated with the VY Sculptoris subclass of nova-like cataclysmic variables. Photometric observations over a 35 month interval from Indiana University\u27s robotic telescope Robo-Scope show two drops of 3 mag to a low state. Spectroscopy shows a periodic velocity variation in the Hβ emission line with P = 3.47 hr. This places the star just above the 2-3 hour period gap, which supports the VY Sculptoris classification

The Repair and Return to Flight of Solid Rocket Booster Forward Skirt Serial Number 20022

    Get PDF
On April 5, 1991, a solid rocket booster (SRB) forward skirt serial number (S/N) 20022 sustained buckling damage during water impact after the launch of Space Transportation System Flight 37 (STS-37). As of that date, five forward skirts had been lost during water impact. Repair attempts began with the least damaged skirt available (S/N 20022). Sp ecial hydraulic tooling was used to remove buckled areas of the skirt. Afterwards, its aft clevis pinholes were found to be out of alignment with the redesigned solid rocket motor (RSRM) check gauge, but weld passes were used to correct this condition. Meanwhile, USA Analytics generated mechanical property data for buckled and subsequently debuckled material. Their analysis suggested that structural integrity might be improved by adding stringer reinforcements, stiffeners, to the aft bay section of the skirt. This improvement was recommended as a fleet modification to be implemented on a case-by-case basis

Genetic maps of Saccharum officinarum L. and Saccharum robustum Brandes & Jew ex grassl.

Genetic analysis was performed in a population composed of 100 F1 individuals derived from a cross between a cultivated sugarcane (S. officinarum La Purple) and its proposed progenitor species (S. robustum "Mol 5829'). Various types (arbitrarily primed-PCR, RFLPs, and AFLPs) of single-dose DNA markers (SDMs) were used to construct genetic linkage maps to both species. The LA Purple map was composed of 341 SDMs, spanning 74 linkage groups and 1.881 cM, white the Mol 5829 map contained 301 SDMs, spanning 65 linkage gropus and 1,189 cM, Transmission genetics in these two species showed incomplete polysomy based on the detection of 15% of SDMs linked in repulsion in LA Purple and 13% of these in Mol 5829. Because of this incomplete polysomy, multiple-dose markers could not be mapped for lack of a genetic model for their segregation. Due to inclusion of RFLP anchor probes, conserved in related species, the resulting maps will serve as useful tools for breeding, ecology, evolution, and molecular biology studies within the Andropogoneae
