    Advanced friction modeling in sheet metal forming

    The Coulomb friction model is frequently used for sheet metal forming simulations. This model incorporates a constant coefficient of friction and does not take the influence of important parameters such as contact pressure or deformation of the sheet material into account. This article presents a more advanced friction model for large-scale forming simulations based on the surface changes on the micro-scale. When two surfaces are in contact, the surface texture of a material changes due to the combination of normal loading and stretching. Consequently, shear stresses between contacting surfaces, caused by the adhesion and ploughing effect between contacting asperities, will change when the surface texture changes. A friction model has been developed which accounts for these microscopic dependencies and its influence on the friction behavior on the macro-scale. The friction model has been validated by means of finite element simulations on the micro-scale and has been implemented in a finite element code to run large scale sheet metal forming simulations. Results showed a realistic distribution of the coefficient of friction depending on the local process conditions

    In this study, young rats were deprived of early social interactions during weeks 4 and 5 of life. Different behavior al tests were conducted in adulthood to study the behavioral responses of rats lacking ear ly social experiences. Juvenile deprivation resulted in decreased social activity and an altered sexual pattern, but did not affect locomotor activity or the performance in the elevated plus maze. Furthermore, behavioral and neuroendocrine responses of juvenile isolated rats were dramatically altered when they were confronted with territorial aggression. Juvenile deprived rats did not readily display a submissive posture in response to the resident and showed no immobility behavior after being returned to the resident's territory, while their plasma corticosterone and adrenaline concentrations;were significantly increased compared to nonisolated controls. In contrast, behavioral responses in the shock prod test were not affected by previous isolation.     Dementia in Parkinson's Disease Correlates with α-Synuclein Pathology but Not with Cortical Astrogliosis

    Dementia is a common feature in Parkinson's disease (PD) and is considered to be the result of limbic and cortical Lewy bodies and/or Alzheimer changes. Astrogliosis may also affect the development of dementia, since it correlates well with declining cognition in Alzheimer patients. Thus, we determined whether cortical astrogliosis occurs in PD, whether it is related to dementia, and whether this is reflected by the presence of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We have examined these proteins by immunohistochemistry in the frontal cortex and by Western blot in CSF of cases with PD, PD with dementia (PDD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and nondemented controls. We were neither able to detect an increase in cortical astrogliosis in PD, PDD, or DLB nor could we observe a correlation between the extent of astrogliosis and the degree of dementia. The levels of GFAP and vimentin in CSF did not correlate to the extent of astrogliosis or dementia. We did confirm the previously identified positive correlation between the presence of cortical Lewy bodies and dementia in PD. In conclusion, we have shown that cortical astrogliosis is not associated with the cognitive decline in Lewy body-related dementia

    We explored the colonization of a patchy ecosystem by two neutrally labeled, but otherwise isogenic, strains of Escherichia coli. One-dimensional arrays of habitat patches linked by connectors were inoculated at opposite ends by two fluorescently-labeled strains, and the colonization was studied by time-lapse microscopy.
