It highlights the fact that some features of #MeToo (blaming and sanctioning wrongdoers) resemble those of criminal punishment and thus require careful justification. In the final part, the author examines the impact of the #MeToo-movement on criminal law reform

Good Scientific Practice and Academic Reviews

Academic reviews (hereinafter “reviews”) are an integral part of legal journals. While their purpose and usefulness are at times disputed, all sub-disciplines of legal studies nevertheless argue in equal measure that a lack of substantial academic exchange by way of reviews would result in the impoverishment of scientific discourse. In German criminal law scholarship, two recent cases have sparked debate about whether certain rules should govern the publication of such reviews. The following remarks are intended to provide a thought-provoking impulse on the matter

Priorisierung von Geimpften?

Der Beitrag befasst sich mit der Frage, ob der Impfstatus ein Auswahlkriterium sein könnte oder sogar sollte, falls in einer Pandemie bei akuter Ressourcenknappheit Priorisierung unabwendbar wird. Er ordnet und bespricht unterschiedliche Thesen, die dazu vertreten werden. Erstens wird angenommen, dass eine Beschäftigung mit diesem schwierigen Problem nicht erforderlich sei. Zweitens könnte man darauf abstellen, dass heikle Themen besser nicht öffentlich erörtert werden sollten. Nach der dritten, häufig vertretenen Argumentationslinie dürfe auf keinen Fall ein Unterschied zwischen geimpften und ungeimpften Patienten gemacht werden, weil dies mit Menschenrechten kollidiere oder mit dem allgemeinen Grundsatz nicht zu vereinbaren sei, dass Vorverhalten von Patienten in der Intensivmedizin unbeachtlich ist. Viertens empfehlen u. a. Verhaltensökonomen eine Berücksichtigung des Impfstatus zur Verbesserung von Impfquoten. Fünftens ist aus ethischer Sicht zu erwägen, ob eine vorangegangene Impfung aus Gründen der Gerechtigkeit Bedeutung habe müsse. Die Autorin vertritt die sechste These, nämlich dass bei vergleichbarer klinischer Erfolgsaussicht ggf. das Unterlassen einer möglichen und empfohlenen Impfung mangels besserer Auswahlkriterien herangezogen werden dürfe. Superior antitumoral activity of dimerized targeted single-chain TRAIL fusion proteins under retention of tumor selectivity

Although targeting of the death receptors (DRs) DR4 and DR5 still appears a suitable antitumoral strategy, the limited clinical responses to recombinant soluble TNF-related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL) necessitate novel reagents with improved apoptotic activity/tumor selectivity. Apoptosis induction by a single-chain TRAIL (scTRAIL) molecule could be enhanced >10-fold by generation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-specific scFv-scTRAIL fusion proteins. By forcing dimerization of scFv-scTRAIL based on scFv linker modification, we obtained a targeted scTRAIL composed predominantly of dimers (Db-scTRAIL), exceeding the activity of nontargeted scTRAIL ∼100-fold on Huh-7 hepatocellular and Colo205 colon carcinoma cells. Increased activity of Db-scTRAIL was also demonstrated on target-negative cells, suggesting that, in addition to targeting, oligomerization equivalent to an at least dimeric assembly of standard TRAIL per se enhances apoptosis signaling. In the presence of apoptosis sensitizers, such as the proteasomal inhibitor bortezomib, Db-scTRAIL was effective at picomolar concentrations in vitro (EC50 ∼2 × 10−12 M). Importantly, in vivo, Db-scTRAIL was well tolerated and displayed superior antitumoral activity in mouse xenograft (Colo205) tumor models. Our results show that both targeting and controlled dimerization of scTRAIL fusion proteins provides a strategy to enforce apoptosis induction, together with retained tumor selectivity and good in vivo tolerance
