Brief announcement: passive and active attacks on audience response systems using software defined radios
Audience response systems, also known as clickers, are used at many academic institutions to offer active learning environments. Since these systems are used to administer graded assignments, and sometimes even exams, it is crucial to assess their security. Our work seeks to exploit and document potential vulnerabilities of clickers. For this purpose, we use software defined radios to perform jamming, sniffing and spoofing attacks on an audience response system in production, which provide different possible methods of cheating. The results of our study demonstrate that clickers are easily exploitable. We build a prototype and show that it is practically possible to covertly steal or forge answers of a peer or even an entire classroom, with high levels of confidence. Additionally, we find that the receivers software of the system lacks protection against unexpected answers, which allows our spoofer to submit any ASCII character and opens the receiver up to possible fuzzing attacks. As a result of this study, we discourage using clickers for high-stake assessments, unless they provide proper security protection..http://people.bu.edu/staro/SSS2017_Brief_v0.pdfhttp://people.bu.edu/staro/SSS2017_Brief_v0.pdfhttp://people.bu.edu/staro/SSS2017_Brief_v0.pdfAccepted manuscrip

Strategic human resource effectiveness, internal marketing and performance in the public sector
Internal marketing (IM) focuses on acquiring and retaining customer-oriented employees and is seen as particularly relevant to service organisations. Critics of internal marketing claim that the term is simply a synonym for good human resources management. The concepts of Internal Marketing and Strategic Human Resource Effectiveness (SHRE) are considered and suitable measures are identified Data is collected from the Australian public sector and a regression analysis is used to investigate the hypothesised relationships. The study provides empirical evidence of a demarcation between IM and SHRE; that SHRE is an important antecedent to IM and that SHRE has both a direct and indirect effect on performance, Management implications are considered and directions for future research offered.peer-reviewe

Disaster Loses in the Developing World: Evidence from the August 1999 Earthquake in Turkey
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of a natural disaster on a developing country’s economy. In that sense, we look at the impact of August 1999 earthquake in Turkey on two important macroeconomic indicators of the Turkish economy (Real Output and Employment) with recovery policies followed by the government and international donors. Our results indicate that the earthquake had a significant immediate negative impact on both output and employment growth in Turkey. While output growth reverted back to its predisaster pattern after the initial shock, employment growth did not recover. The earthquake had both a short run and long run influence on the Turkish economy. This study will develop understanding of the possible effects of future earthquakes. Also, it will help the Turkish Government evaluate already-applied mitigation measures (like Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool etc.) and guide the preparation for forthcoming disasters since scientists have reached a consensus that a major earthquake is expected in Istanbul.

Effects of some environmental challenges and centralization on the entrepreneurial orientation and performance of public sector entities
The relevance of entrepreneurship in the public sector is considered. In investigating relationships a review of the literature is undertaken and a model is proposed to examine the effects of certain environmental variables and centralisation on entrepreneurship and ultimately, performance. The proposed model is based on work conducted by Covin and Slevin [1991], reconsidered within a public sector context. Research is conducted among Australian public sector entities. A structural equation model is used to examine the hypothesised linkages. Implications of the findings are discussed, limitations are noted and directions for future research are outlined.peer-reviewe
Loop quantum cosmology of Bianchi type IX models
The loop quantum cosmology "improved dynamics" of the Bianchi type IX model
are studied. The action of the Hamiltonian constraint operator is obtained via
techniques developed for the Bianchi type I and type II models, no new input is
required. It is shown that the big bang and big crunch singularities are
resolved by quantum gravity effects. We also present the effective equations
which provide modifications to the classical equations of motion due to quantum
geometry effects.Comment: 20 page
