A Relativistic Description of Gentry's New Redshift Interpretation
We obtain a new expression of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, which is
an analogue of a static chart of the de Sitter space-time. The reduced metric
contains two functions, and , which are interpreted as,
respectively, the mass function and the gravitational potential. We find that,
near the coordinate origin, the reduced metric can be approximated in a static
form and that the approximated metric function, , satisfies the
Poisson equation. Moreover, when the model parameters of the
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric are suitably chosen, the approximated metric
coincides with exact solutions of the Einstein equation with the perfect fluid
matter. We then solve the radial geodesics on the approximated space-time to
obtain the distance-redshift relation of geodesic sources observed by the
comoving observer at the origin. We find that the redshift is expressed in
terms of a peculiar velocity of the source and the metric function, ,
evaluated at the source position, and one may think that this is a new
interpretation of {\it Gentry's new redshift interpretation}.Comment: 11 pages. Submitted to Modern Physics Letters
Pre-Congestion Notification (PCN) Architecture
This document describes a general architecture for flow admission and termination based on pre-congestion information in order to protect the quality of service of established, inelastic flows within a single Diffserv domain.\u
On the Nature of Singularities in Plane Symmetric Scalar Field Cosmologies
The nature of the initial singularity in spatially compact plane symmetric
scalar field cosmologies is investigated. It is shown that this singularity is
crushing and velocity dominated and that the Kretschmann scalar diverges
uniformly as it is approached. The last fact means in particular that a maximal
globally hyperbolic spacetime in this class cannot be extended towards the past
through a Cauchy horizon. A subclass of these spacetimes is identified for
which the singularity is isotropic.Comment: 7 pages, MPA-AR-94-

Sensory dominance and multisensory integration as screening tools in aging
Multisensory information typically confers neural and behavioural advantages over unisensory information. We used a simple audio-visual detection task to compare healthy young (HY), healthy older (HO) and mild-cognitive impairment (MCI) individuals. Neuropsychological tests assessed individuals' learning and memory impairments. First, we provide much-needed clarification regarding the presence of enhanced multisensory benefits in both healthily and abnormally aging individuals. The pattern of sensory dominance shifted with healthy and abnormal aging to favour a propensity of auditory-dominant behaviour (i.e., detecting sounds faster than flashes). Notably, multisensory benefits were larger only in healthy older than younger individuals who were also visually-dominant. Second, we demonstrate that the multisensory detection task offers benefits as a time- and resource-economic MCI screening tool. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis demonstrated that MCI diagnosis could be reliably achieved based on the combination of indices of multisensory integration together with indices of sensory dominance. Our findings showcase the importance of sensory profiles in determining multisensory benefits in healthy and abnormal aging. Crucially, our findings open an exciting possibility for multisensory detection tasks to be used as a cost-effective screening tool. These findings clarify relationships between multisensory and memory functions in aging, while offering new avenues for improved dementia diagnostics
Supersymmetry, the Cosmological Constant and a Theory of Quantum Gravity in Our Universe
There are many theories of quantum gravity, depending on asymptotic boundary
conditions, and the amount of supersymmetry. The cosmological constant is one
of the fundamental parameters that characterize different theories. If it is
positive, supersymmetry must be broken. A heuristic calculation shows that a
cosmological constant of the observed size predicts superpartners in the TeV
range. This mechanism for SUSY breaking also puts important constraints on low
energy particle physics models. This essay was submitted to the Gravity
Research Foundation Competition and is based on a longer article, which will be
submitted in the near future
Requirements for Signaling of Pre-Congestion Information in a Diffserv Domain
Pre-Congestion Notification (PCN) is a means for protecting quality of service for inelastic traffic admitted to a Diffserv domain. The overall PCN architecture is described in RFC 5559. This memo describes the requirements for the signaling applied within the PCN- domain: (1) PCN-feedback-information is carried from the PCN-egress-node to the Decision Point; (2) the Decision Point may ask the PCN-ingress-node to measure, and report back, the rate of sent PCN-traffic between that PCN-ingress-node and PCN-egress-node. The Decision Point may be either collocated with the PCN-ingress-node or a centralized node (in the first case, (2) is not required). The signaling requirements pertain in particular to two edge behaviors, Controlled Load (CL) and Single Marking (SM)
Critical Exponents and Stability at the Black Hole Threshold for a Complex Scalar Field
This paper continues a study on Choptuik scaling in gravitational collapse of
a complex scalar field at the threshold for black hole formation. We perform a
linear perturbation analysis of the previously derived complex critical
solution, and calculate the critical exponent for black hole mass, . We also show that this critical solution is unstable via a
growing oscillatory mode.Comment: 15 pages of latex/revtex; added details of numerics, in press in Phys

Null Geodesic Expansion in Spherical Gravitational Collapse
We derive an expression for the expansion of outgoing null geodesics in
spherical dust collapse and compute the limiting value of the expansion in the
approach to singularity formation. An analogous expression is derived for the
spherical collapse of a general form of matter. We argue on the basis of these
results that the covered as well as the naked singularity solutions arising in
spherical dust collapse are stable under small changes in the equation of
state.Comment: 10 pages, Latex File, No figure
Criticality and Bifurcation in the Gravitational Collapse of a Self-Coupled Scalar Field
We examine the gravitational collapse of a non-linear sigma model in
spherical symmetry. There exists a family of continuously self-similar
solutions parameterized by the coupling constant of the theory. These solutions
are calculated together with the critical exponents for black hole formation of
these collapse models. We also find that the sequence of solutions exhibits a
Hopf-type bifurcation as the continuously self-similar solutions become
unstable to perturbations away from self-similarity.Comment: 18 pages; one figure, uuencoded postscript; figure is also available

Breaking cosmic strings without monopoles
It is shown that topologically stable cosmic strings can, in fact, appear to end or to break, even in theories without monopoles. This can occur whenever the spatial topology of the universe is nontrivial. For the case of Abelian-Higgs strings, we describe the gauge and scalar field configurations necessary for a string to end on a black hole. We give a lower bound for the rate at which a cosmic string will break via black hole pair production, using an instanton calculation based on the Euclidean C-metric
