    Radial Velocities of Six OB Stars

    We present new results from a radial velocity study of six bright OB stars with little or no prior measurements. One of these, HD 45314, may be a long-period binary, but the velocity variations of this Be star may be related to changes in its circumstellar disk. Significant velocity variations were also found for HD 60848 (possibly related to nonradial pulsations) and HD 61827 (related to wind variations). The other three targets, HD 46150, HD 54879, and HD 206183, are constant velocity objects, but we note that HD 54879 has Hα\alpha emission that may originate from a binary companion.     Imaging the Algol Triple System in H Band with the CHARA Interferometer

    Algol (Beta Per) is an extensively studied hierarchical triple system whose inner pair is a prototype semi-detached binary with mass transfer occurring from the sub-giant secondary to the main-sequence primary. We present here the results of our Algol observations made between 2006 and 2010 at the CHARA interferometer with the Michigan Infrared Combiner in the H band. The use of four telescopes with long baselines allows us to achieve better than 0.5 mas resolution and to unambiguously resolve the three stars. The inner and outer orbital elements, as well as the angular sizes and mass ratios for the three components are determined independently from previous studies. We report a significantly improved orbit for the inner stellar pair with the consequence of a 15% change in the primary mass compared to previous studies. We also determine the mutual inclination of the orbits to be much closer to perpendicularity than previously established. State-of-the-art image reconstruction algorithms are used to image the full triple system. In particular an image sequence of 55 distinct phases of the inner pair orbit is reconstructed, clearly showing the Roche-lobe-filling secondary revolving around the primary, with several epochs corresponding to the primary and secondary eclipses

    MMP7 Shedding of Syndecan-1 Facilitates Re-Epithelialization by Affecting α2β1 Integrin Activation

    Lung injury promotes the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP7, matrilysin), which is required for neutrophil recruitment and re-epithelialization. MMP7 governs the lung inflammatory response through the shedding of syndecan-1. Because inflammation and repair are related events, we evaluated the role of syndecan-1 shedding in lung re-epithelialization.Epithelial injury induced syndecan-1 shedding from wild-type epithelium but not from Mmp7(-/-) mice in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, cell migration and wound closure was enhanced by MMP7 shedding of syndecan-1. Additionally, we found that syndecan-1 augmented cell adhesion to collagen by controlling the affinity state of the alpha(2)beta(1) integrin.MMP7 shedding of syndecan-1 facilitates wound closure by causing the alpha(2)beta(1) integrin to assume a less active conformation thereby removing restrictions to migration. MMP7 acts in the lungs to regulate inflammation and repair, and our data now show that both these functions are controlled through the shedding of syndecan-1

    Building an AdS/CFT superconductor

    We show that a simple gravitational theory can provide a holographically dual description of a superconductor. There is a critical temperature, below which a charged condensate forms via a second order phase transition and the (DC) conductivity becomes infinite.     Mechanical Control of Spin States in Spin-1 Molecules and the Underscreened Kondo Effect

    The ability to make electrical contact to single molecules creates opportunities to examine fundamental processes governing electron flow on the smallest possible length scales. We report experiments in which we controllably stretch individual cobalt complexes having spin S = 1, while simultaneously measuring current flow through the molecule. The molecule's spin states and magnetic anisotropy were manipulated in the absence of a magnetic field by modification of the molecular symmetry. This control enabled quantitative studies of the underscreened Kondo effect, in which conduction electrons only partially compensate the molecular spin. Our findings demonstrate a mechanism of spin control in single-molecule devices and establish that they can serve as model systems for making precision tests of correlated-electron theories.Comment: main text: 5 pages, 4 figures; supporting information attached; to appear in Science

    Composite vortex model of the electrodynamics of high-TcT_c superconductor

    We propose a phenomenological model of vortex dynamics in which the vortex is taken as a composite object made of two components: the vortex current which is massless and driven by the Lorentz force, and the vortex core which is massive and driven by the Magnus force. By combining the characteristics of the Gittleman-Rosenblum model (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 16}, 734 (1966)) and Hsu's theory of vortex dynamics (Physica {\bf C 213},305 (1993)), the model provides a good description of recent far infrared measurements of the magneto-conductivity tensor of superconducting YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta } films from 5 cm−1^{-1} to 200 cm−1^{-1}.Comment: LaTex file (12 pages) + 3 Postscript figures, uuencoded.     Measurement of the Far Infrared Magneto-Conductivity Tensor of Superconducting YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta } Thin Films

    We report measurements of the far infrared transmission of superconducting YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta } thin films from 5 cm−1^{-1} to 200 cm−1^{-1} in fields up to 14TT. A Kramers-Kronig analysis of the magneto-transmission spectrum yields the magneto-conductivity tensor. The result shows that the magneto-conductivity of YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta } is dominated by three terms: a London term, a low frequency Lorentzian (ω1≈\omega _1\approx 3 cm−1% ^{-1}) of width Γ1=\Gamma _1= 10 cm−1^{-1} and a finite frequency Lorentzian of width Γ2=\Gamma _2= 17 cm−1^{-1} at ω2=\omega _2= 24 cm−1^{-1} in the hole cyclotron resonance active mode of circular polarization.\\Comment: Revised LaTex file (12 pages) + 4 Postscript figures, uuencoded.
