    Evaluation Of The Risk Of A Stripping Perforation With Gates-glidden Drills: Serial Versus Crown-down Sequences

    The aim of this study was to evaluatte the remaining dentine/cementum thickness using Gates-Glidden burs in serial and crown-down sequences and to observe which of the two sequences is the safest for preparing mesial roots of molars. Thirty-six left and. right human mandibular first molars were selected. Standard access cavities were made and initially explored with Flexofiles sizes 10 and 15 until the tip was visible at the apex. The teeth were embedded in a muffle speqially developed for this study using a PVC tube with two parallel metal rods An its lid. Each tooth-block was sectioned 3 mm apically to the furcation using a low-speed saw with a diamond disc. The tooth-block was examined under a microscope and an initial image was captured by a digital video system with 8 X and 12 X magnifications. Finally, the tooth-blocks were reassembled in the muffle so that the canals could be instrumented. After instrumentation the area of each mesial canal as well as the smallest distance to the root furcation were measured again. The mesio-buccal canals (crown-down order) and the mesio-lingual canals (serial sequence) presented an average area of 0.46 ± 0.16 mm2 and 0.88 ± 0.27 mm2 (P < 0.01), respectively. The mean values of the smallest distance to the furcation for the mesio-buccal and mesio-lingual canals were 0.66 ± 0.19 mm and 0.39 ± 0.13 mm (P < 0.01), respectively.     Quantum phase transitions in alternating spin-(1/2, 5/2) Heisenberg chains

    The ground state spin-wave excitations and thermodynamic properties of two types of ferrimagnetic chains are investigated: the alternating spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain and a similar chain with a spin-1/2 pendant attached to the spin-5/2 site. Results for magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat are obtained through the finite-temperature Lanczos method with the aim in describing available experimental data, as well as comparison with theoretical results from the semiclassical approximation and the low-temperature susceptibility expansion derived from Takahashi's modified spin-wave theory. In particular, we study in detail the temperature vs. magnetic field phase diagram of the spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain, in which several low-temperature quantum phases are identified: the Luttinger Liquid phase, the ferrimagnetic plateau and the fully polarized one, and the respective quantum critical points and crossover lines

    Organic and mineral matter changes due to oil generation, saturation and expulsion processes based on artificial maturation experiments

    Hydrous pyrolysis experiments were conducted on immature organic-rich rock with type-I kerogen to evaluate petroleum generation, saturation and expulsion processes. The experiments were carried out under isothermal conditions at ten different temperatures (280° through 360°C) for nine different time spans between 18 and 144h. Rock samples recovered from the experiments were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC-weight%), Rock-Eval pyrolysis, vitrinite reflectance (Ro%), spectral fluorescence and visual characterization of organic matter under the microscopy. TOC, S2 and HI tend to decrease with increasing temperature and duration of the experiments as expected. The Ro% values reach up to 1.14% in the most severe experiment (i.e. 360°C/96h). The Ro% is believed to be suppressed due to hydrogen incorporation from bitumen. The bitumen production was observed with the increase of transformation index (TI) and two types of bitumen were differentiated by fluorescence color. The bitumen with yellow fluorescence was mainly composed of saturate and aromatic hydrocarbons that were probably generated earlier than the bitumen with brown fluorescence which is rich in NSO compounds. The greatest bitumen saturation occurs at TI around of 41% to 45%, when the S1 reaches its highest values. The decrease of bitumen saturation and consequent oil expulsion is marked by a reduction in S1 values and fluorescence color. This phenomenon occurs simultaneously with the development of fractures and voids in the mineral matrix which reduces the oil retention capability and facilitates the expulsion process. These observations enhanced the understanding of oil generation and saturation processes, as well as primary migration, expulsion and type of generated bitumen

    Divergência genética entre clones de guaranazeiro.

    As técnicas multivariadas, para estimar a diversidade genética de um grupo de progenitores, têm sido utilizadas com freqüência pelos melhoristas de plantas. Os progenitores são utilizados em cruzamentos biparentais ou múltiplos, para formação de populações segregantes que tenham maior probabilidade de recuperação de genótipos superiores. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de identificar clones de guaranazeiro produtivos e divergentes que possam ser utilizados em um programa de cruzamentos para obter híbridos com alto valor heterótico e materiais para propagação vegetativa. Foram avaliados 148 clones de guaranazeiro atualmente em uso no programa de melhoramento genético da Embrapa-Centro de Pesquisa Agroflorestal da Amazônia Ocidental. Utilizou-se, para estimativa da divergência genética, a análise de agrupamento, em que a medida de dissimilaridade utilizada foi a distância euclidiana média padronizada e os métodos de agrupamento de otimização de Tocher e do vizinho mais próximo para construção do dendrograma entre grupos de clones. Houve a formação de sete grupos divergentes de clones. Concluiu-se que a divergência genética entre os clones não é grande, pois dois grupos foram formados com dois clones e três grupos foram formados somente com um único clone. Os clones CMU384 e CMU801 foram os mais próximos geneticamente e podem ser utilizados na formação de uma população com desenvolvimento vegetativo uniforme para uso em plantios comerciais.Título em inglês: Genetic divergence between clones of guarana

    Antioxidant activity of stryphnodendron rotundifolium mart. Stem bark fraction in an iron overload model

    Stryphnodendron rotundifolium Mart., popularly known as “barbatimão”, is a plant species traditionally used by topical and oral routes for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases. Considering the well-described antioxidant properties of this species, this study investigated the protective effects of its keto-aqueous extract using an in vitro model of iron overload. Phenolic compounds were quantified and identified by Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with quadrupole Time-Of-Flight Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (UPLC–ESI-qTOF-MS/MS) in positive and negative ions mode analysis. Antioxidant activity was analyzed following the iron-chelating–reducing capacity and deoxyribose degradation (2-DR) protection methods. The analysis identified condensed tannins (54.8 mg catechin/g dry fraction (DF), polyphenols (25 mg gallic acid/g DF), and hydrolyzable tannins (28.8 mg tannic acid/g DF). Among the constituents, prodelphinidin, procyanidin, and prorobinetinidine were isolated and identified. The extract sig-nificantly protected 2-DR degradation induced by Fe2+ (72% protection) or• OH (43% protection). The ortho-phenanthroline test revealed Fe2+-chelating and Fe3+-reducing activities of 93% and 84%, respectively. A preliminary toxicological analysis using Artemia salina revealed mortality below 10%, at a concentration of 0.25 mg/mL, indicating low toxicity under the present experimental conditions. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicate that Stryphnodendron rotundifolium is a source of antioxidant compounds with the potential to be used in drug development in the context of iron overload disorders, which remains to be further investigated in vivo

    Os corredores ecológicos são importantes estruturas ambientais com a finalidade de conservação e recuperação da biodiversidade em áreas degradadas, decorrentes do desenvolvimento humano desordenado, que favorece a fragmentação florestal e a perda da conectividade entre os diversos habitats naturais. Com a utilização do sensoriamento remoto e de sistemas de informações geográficas, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar áreas com potencial para corredores ecológicos por meio de uma técnica automatizada, o que reduz o caráter pessoal na interpretação visual da imagem. Assim, realizou-se uma análise da conexão entre as Unidades de Conservação presentes na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Formoso, Mato Grosso do Sul, mediante a identificação das Unidades de Conservação, das Áreas de Preservação Permanente e dos fragmentos florestais remanescentes.
