Air hydrodynamics of the ultrafast laser-triggered spark gap
We present space and time resolved measurements of the air hydrodynamics
induced by ultrafast laser pulse excitation of the air gap between two
electrodes at high potential difference. We explore both plasma-based and
plasma-free gap excitation. The former uses the plasma left in the wake of
femtosecond filamentation, while the latter exploits air heating by
multiple-pulse resonant excitation of quantum molecular wavepackets. We find
that the cumulative electrode-driven air density depression channel initiated
by the laser plays the dominant role in the gap evolution leading to breakdown
Kaon Electromagnetic Production on Nuclei
The formation and excitation of hypernuclei through kaon photoproduction is
reviewed. Basic features of the production process are emphasized. The
possibility of extracting new information on hypernuclear structure and on the
wave function of the bound is discussed. New results are presented
for the quasifree production process . Observables of
this reaction are shown to be sensitive to the -nucleus final state

NEAR-SURFACE EFFECTS IN MODELLING OSCILLATIONS OF ETA BOO
Following the report of solar-like oscillations in the G0 V star eta Boo
(Kjeldsen et al. 1995, AJ 109, 1313), a first attempt to model the observed
frequencies was made by Christensen-Dalsgaard et al. (1995, ApJ Letters, in
press). This attempt succeeded in reproducing the observed frequency
separations, although there remained a difference of about 10 microHz between
observed and computed frequencies. In those models, the near-surface region of
the star was treated rather crudely. Here we consider more sophisticated models
that include non-local mixing-length theory, turbulent pressure and

Bottleneck Routing Games with Low Price of Anarchy
We study {\em bottleneck routing games} where the social cost is determined
by the worst congestion on any edge in the network. In the literature,
bottleneck games assume player utility costs determined by the worst congested
edge in their paths. However, the Nash equilibria of such games are inefficient
since the price of anarchy can be very high and proportional to the size of the
network. In order to obtain smaller price of anarchy we introduce {\em
exponential bottleneck games} where the utility costs of the players are
exponential functions of their congestions. We find that exponential bottleneck
games are very efficient and give a poly-log bound on the price of anarchy:

players' strategy sets and is the set of edges in the graph. By adjusting
the exponential utility costs with a logarithm we obtain games whose player
costs are almost identical to those in regular bottleneck games, and at the
same time have the good price of anarchy of exponential games.Comment: 12 page
Immorality and Irrationality
Does immorality necessarily involve irrationality? The question is often taken to be among the deepest in moral philosophy. But apparently deep questions sometimes admit of deflationary answers. In this case we can make way for a deflationary answer by appealing to dualism about rationality, according to which there are two fundamentally distinct notions of rationality: structural rationality and substantive rationality. I have defended dualism elsewhere. Here, I’ll argue that it allows us to embrace a sensible – I will not say boring – moderate view about the relationship between immorality and irrationality: roughly, that immorality involves substantive irrationality, but not structural irrationality. I defend this moderate view, and argue that many of the arguments for less moderate views turn either on missing the distinction between substantive and structural rationality, or on misconstruing it
Inorganic Polyphosphates Are Important for Cell Survival and Motility of Human Skin Keratinocytes and Play a Role in Wound Healing
Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is a simple ancient polymer of linear chains of orthophosphate residues linked by high energy phospho-anhydride bonds ubiquitously found in all organisms. Despite its structural simplicity, it plays diverse functional roles. polyP is involved in myriad of processes including serving as microbial phosphagens, buffer against alkalis, Ca2+ storage, metal-chelating agents, pathogen virulence, cell viability and proliferation, structural component and chemical chaperones, and in the microbial stress response. In mammalian cells, polyP has been implicated in blood coagulation, inflammation, bone differentiation, cell bioenergetics, signal transduction, Ca2+-signaling, neuronal excitability, as a protein-stabilizing scaffold, and in wound healing, among others. This chapter will discuss (1) polyP metabolism and roles of polyP in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, (2) the contribution of polyP to survival, cell proliferation, and motility involved in wound healing in human skin keratinocytes, (3) the use of polyP-containing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to promote wound healing in acute and chronic wounds, including burns, and (4) the use of polyP-containing PRP in excisional wound models to promote faster healing. While polyP shows promise as a therapeutic agent to accelerate healing for acute and chronic wounds, the molecular mechanisms as a potent modulator of the wound healing process remain to be elucidated
Efficiency in Multi-objective Games
In a multi-objective game, each agent individually evaluates each overall
action-profile on multiple objectives. I generalize the price of anarchy to
multi-objective games and provide a polynomial-time algorithm to assess it.
