    Effect of ketoprofen treatment in the prevention of postpartum dysgalactia syndrome in sows

    Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PDS) is an economically important condition in sows. The syndrome is characterized by a reduced milk and colostrum production within 12 to 48 hours post partum. The objective of this study was to determine whether preventive treatment with ketoprofen (Ketofen (R) 10%, Merial, Belgium) has a positive effect on the subclinical form of PDS. Sows (n = 39) were randomly divided into two groups: one served as control group whereas the other was treated intramuscularly with ketoprofen within twelve hours after parturition. During the first 24 hours postpartum, the rectal temperature of the sows decreased (-0.43 +/- 0.13 degrees C) in the ketoprofen group. In the control group, an increase was seen (+0.07 +/- 0.02 degrees C) (P < 0.05). There was no significant effect on back fat loss of the sows, weight gain of the piglets (n = 541) and survival rate. In conclusion, a single intramuscular administration of ketoprofen to sows shortly after farrowing decreased rectal temperature but did not improve the performance of the piglets

    Vortex Redistribution below the First-Order Transition Temperature in the \beta-Pyrochlore Superconductor KOs_2O_6

    A miniature Hall sensor array was used to detect magnetic induction locally in the vortex states of the β\beta-pyrochlore superconductor KOs2_2O6_6. Below the first-order transition at Tp∼8T_{\rm p}\sim 8 K, which is associated with a change in the rattling motion of K ions, the lower critical field and the remanent magnetization both show a distinct decrease, suggesting that the electron-phonon coupling is weakened below the transition. At high magnetic fields, the local induction shows an unexpectedly large jump at TpT_{\rm p} whose sign changes with position inside the sample. Our results demonstrate a novel redistribution of vortices whose energy is reduced abruptly below the first-order transition at TpT_{\rm p}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.     Influence of prenatal maternal stress, maternal plasma cortisol and cortisol in the amniotic fluid on birth outcomes and child temperament at 3 months

    This prospective, longitudinal study aimed to investigate relationships between indicators of maternal prenatal stress, infant birth outcomes and early temperament. We examined the pattern of associations and postulated pathways between physiological (cortisol plasma concentrations) and self-report indices (stress, anxiety) of maternal prenatal stress, cortisol in the amniotic fluid, birth outcomes and infant temperament at 3 months. The sample consisted of 158 women undergoing amniocentesis in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. Questionnaire measures of maternal stress and anxiety were found to be unrelated to cortisol in plasma or amniotic fluid. Maternal cortisol was related to amniotic cortisol, which in turn was associated with lower birth weight. Birth weight predicted infant fear and distress to limitation at 3 months old. We found trend-like indirect effects of amniotic fluid on infant distress to limitation and fear via birth weight. This is one of the few studies to simultaneously assess the role of maternal and amniotic fluid cortisol on birth outcomes and infant emotional development. The results suggest that foetal cortisol may be an important predictor of infant outcomes and shed light on the mechanisms through which prenatal maternal stress affects infant psychological health

    Coherent branching feature bisimulation

    Progress in the behavioral analysis of software product lines at the family level benefits from further development of the underlying semantical theory. Here, we propose a behavioral equivalence for feature transition systems (FTS) generalizing branching bisimulation for labeled transition systems (LTS). We prove that branching feature bisimulation for an FTS of a family of products coincides with branching bisimulation for the LTS projection of each the individual products. For a restricted notion of coherent branching feature bisimulation we furthermore present a minimization algorithm and show its correctness. Although the minimization problem for coherent branching feature bisimulation is shown to be intractable, application of the algorithm in the setting of a small case study results in a significant speed-up of model checking of behavioral properties
