Negro participation in the primary and general elections in Texas.

Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityMost of the benefits received by the people of a democratic state result from the ideologies of the public officials elected to office through popular vote. If a group has been prohibited the right to participate in this function, they have been denied an important role, which all citizens should assume, in democracy. This thesis seeks to ascertain the participation of Negroes in the primary and general election in Texas, and to determine whether the present system permits full Negro participation in those political processes. This is achieved by statistical data, on Texas elections, newspaper articles, personal interviews and personal observations. A survey of the primary system and the extinction of the white primary law, in conjunction with evidences of increased participation in the political process of the state, seems to permit full participation of the Negro in those processes. Multi-Grid Genetic Algorithms For Optimal Radiation Shield Design.

Genetic Algorithms (GA) are a powerful search and optimization technique that can be applied to numerous problems. Unfortunately, GA relies on large numbers of fitness evaluations to determine the relative merits of various solutions to a problem. For problems requiring computationally intensive fitness evaluations this can make GA too expensive to use. We describe a hierarchical technique that we have created called Multi-Grid Genetic Algorithms (MGGA). MGGA leverages the geometry of a problem space to build a hierarchy of increasingly smaller problem spaces. Optimizations over these smaller spaces are used to seed a population of solutions in a larger space. We explore how MGGA can be applied to several radiation shielding problems.Ph.D.Nuclear Engineering & Radiological SciencesUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Laser Truss Sensor for Segmented Telescope Phasing

Get PDF
A paper describes the laser truss sensor (LTS) for detecting piston motion between two adjacent telescope segment edges. LTS is formed by two point-to-point laser metrology gauges in a crossed geometry. A high-resolution (<30 nm) LTS can be implemented with existing laser metrology gauges. The distance change between the reference plane and the target plane is measured as a function of the phase change between the reference and target beams. To ease the bandwidth requirements for phase detection electronics (or phase meter), homodyne or heterodyne detection techniques have been used. The phase of the target beam also changes with the refractive index of air, which changes with the air pressure, temperature, and humidity. This error can be minimized by enclosing the metrology beams in baffles. For longer-term (weeks) tracking at the micron level accuracy, the same gauge can be operated in the absolute metrology mode with an accuracy of microns; to implement absolute metrology, two laser frequencies will be used on the same gauge. Absolute metrology using heterodyne laser gauges is a demonstrated technology. Complexity of laser source fiber distribution can be optimized using the range-gated metrology (RGM) approach

Steps in the bacterial flagellar motor

Get PDF
The bacterial flagellar motor is a highly efficient rotary machine used by many bacteria to propel themselves. It has recently been shown that at low speeds its rotation proceeds in steps [Sowa et al. (2005) Nature 437, 916--919]. Here we propose a simple physical model that accounts for this stepping behavior as a random walk in a tilted corrugated potential that combines torque and contact forces. We argue that the absolute angular position of the rotor is crucial for understanding step properties, and show this hypothesis to be consistent with the available data, in particular the observation that backward steps are smaller on average than forward steps. Our model also predicts a sublinear torque-speed relationship at low torque, and a peak in rotor diffusion as a function of torque

Cooperation of the Dam1 and Ndc80 kinetochore complexes enhances microtubule coupling and is regulated by aurora B

The Dam1 complex, regulated by aurora B phosphorylation, confers a more stable microtubule association for the Ndc80 complex at kinetochores (see also related paper by Lampert et al. in this issue)

The effect of transmucosal 0.2mg/kg Midazolam premedication on dental anxiety, anaesthetic induction and psychological morbidity in children undergoing general anaesthesia for tooth extraction

Get PDF
<b>Background:</b> The project aims were to evaluate the benefit of transmucosal Midazolam 0.2mg/kg pre-medication on anxiety, induction behaviour and psychological morbidity in children undergoing general anaesthesia (GA) extractions. <b>Method:</b> 179 children aged 5-10 years (mean 6.53 years) participated in this randomised, double blind, placebo controlled trial. Ninety children had Midazolam placed in the buccal pouch. Dental anxiety was recorded pre operatively and 48 hours later using a child reported MCDAS-FIS scale. Behaviour at anaesthetic induction was recorded and psychological morbidity was scored by the parent using the Rutter Scale pre-operatively and again one-week later. Subsequent dental attendance was recorded at one, three and six months after GA. <b>Results:</b> Whilst levels of mental anxiety did not reduce overall, the most anxious patients demonstrated a reduction in anxiety after receiving midazolam premedicationmay (p=0.01). Neither induction behaviour nor psychological morbidity improved. Irrespective of group, parents reported less hyperactive (p= 0.002) and more prosocial behaviour (p=0.002) after the procedure:;, older children improved most (p=0.048), Post GA Dental attendance was poor and unrelated to after the procedure and unaffected by premedication. <b>Conclusion:</b> 0.2mg/kg buccal Midazolam provided some evidence for reducing anxiety in the most dentally anxious patients. However, induction behaviour, psychological morbidity and subsequent dental attendance were not found to alter between the premedication groups

Guillain-Barré syndrome: a century of progress

Get PDF
In 1916, Guillain, BarrĂ© and Strohl reported on two cases of acute flaccid paralysis with high cerebrospinal fluid protein levels and normal cell counts — novel findings that identified the disease we now know as Guillain–BarrĂ© syndrome (GBS). 100 years on, we have made great progress with the clinical and pathological characterization of GBS. Early clinicopathological and animal studies indicated that GBS was an immune-mediated demyelinating disorder, and that severe GBS could result in secondary axonal injury; the current treatments of plasma exchange and intravenous immunoglobulin, which were developed in the 1980s, are based on this premise. Subsequent work has, however, shown that primary axonal injury can be the underlying disease. The association of Campylobacter jejuni strains has led to confirmation that anti-ganglioside antibodies are pathogenic and that axonal GBS involves an antibody and complement-mediated disruption of nodes of Ranvier, neuromuscular junctions and other neuronal and glial membranes. Now, ongoing clinical trials of the complement inhibitor eculizumab are the first targeted immunotherapy in GBS

The personal aircraft: Status and issues

Get PDF
Paper summarizes the status of personal air transportation with emphasis upon VTOL and converticar capability. The former obviates the need for airport operations for personal aircraft whereas the latter provides both ground and air capability in the same vehicle. Fully automatic operation, ATC and navigation is stressed along with consideration of acoustic, environmental and cost issues
