Whey separation using TiO2-modified ultrafiltration membrane
Nowadays, the membrane filtration technique is a commonly used method for the separation of whey. The most significant limitation of membrane applications is fouling, which causes flux decline. During this work, regenerated cellulose membranes covered by TiO2-nanoparticles were investigated and applied to the separation of whey solution. Experiments were carried out in a dead-end ultrafiltration cell, and the changes in filtration parameters and the photocatalytic effects of the UV irradiated TiO2 modified membrane surface on the membrane fouling were examined. Our results showed that the water flux decreased with increasing TiO2 layer thickness, but the retention of turbidity and of COD increased. After separation, the membrane surface was cleaned by UV irradiation by means of photocatalytic oxidation. It was found that the original flux was recoverable, while the retention of the membrane decreased after cleaning
A hajdúszoboszlói Kéthalom recens löszvegetációjának fitolit morfotípus-diverzitás vizsgálata
A kunhalmok az alföldi táj kiemelkedő természetvédelmi és kultúrtörténeti értékei. Az intenzív
mezőgazdaság elől a kunhalmok felszínére visszaszorult löszpusztai növényzet fitolitkészletét a Hajdúszoboszló
melletti Kéthalmon vizsgáltuk. A halom növényzetének kevésbé degradált palástját a domináns pázsitfüvek
alapján három részre osztottuk; ezeket cönológiai felvételezéssel jellemeztük. A cönológiai felvételekben
előforduló 27 faj egy-egy példányából hamvasztásos módszerrel nyertük ki a biogén szilíciumot. Minden egyes
faj fitolitkészletét több száz fénymikroszkópi fotóval dokumentáltuk. A kétszikűekben 19 fitolit morfotípust
különböztettünk meg, szemben a pázsitfüvek 25 fitolit formájával. Ebből 9 morfotípus csak a vizsgált kétszikű
fajokban fordult elő, míg a pázsitfüvekben 16 olyan morfotípust találtunk, amely a vizsgált kétszikű fajokra nem jellemző. Várható módon a vizsgált pázsitfüvek fitolit produkciója volt kiemelkedő. A löszvegetáció leíró
A pázsitfűfajok dominanciája jelentkezik a vegetációra jellemző fitolitkészlet diverzitásban. Eredményeink megalapozzák a fitolit morfotípus-diverzitás, mint paleoökológiai eszköz vegetáció rekonstrukcióban, illetve környezet- és tájtörténeti vizsgálatokban történő alkalmazását is
Discovery of a substellar companion in the TESS light curve of the Scuti/ Doradus hybrid pulsator HD 31221
Close-in, sub-stellar companions to Scuti type stars present a
highly suitable testbed for examining how planetary-mass objects can influence
stellar pulsations. We aim to constrain the mass of HD 31221 b, probe its
atmosphere, and demonstrate how it affects the pulsational pattern of its host,
HD 31221. We made use of the available data from the short-cadence Transiting
Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We modeled the nine observed transits and
the out-of-phase variations, including Doppler beaming, ellipsoidal variations,
and the reflection effect. We also incorporated ground-based photometry from
the MuSCAT2 imager installed at the 1.52 m Telescopio Carlos Sanchez in the
Teide Observatory, Spain. We found HD 31221 b to have an orbital period of
days, with a radius of R and a mass
of M (from the ellipsoidal effect), making it consistent
with either a brown dwarf or a giant planet. As HD 31221 is a rapid rotator ( km s), we deduced the spin-orbit
misalignment to be and . The phase curve is dominated by the reflection effect, with a
geometric albedo of . We also found evidence that HD 31221 is a
Scuti/ Doradus hybrid pulsator. There are three cases for
which the rd, th, and st orbital harmonics almost exactly coincide
with peaks in the Fourier spectrum of the star, hinting at tidally perturbed
stellar oscillations. HD 31221 b is the third substellar object that is found
to be disrupting the pulsations of its host, following HAT-P-2 and WASP-33.
Additional photometric observations by CHEOPS and/or PLATO can be used to
further constrain its mass and provide a more in-depth analysis of its
atmosphere.Comment: Accepted for publication as a Letter in A&A, 12 pages, 10 figure
Antibacterial effect of sprouts against human pathogens in vitro
Sprouts contain minerals, vitamins, and other compounds, which may have antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial compounds are released from homogenized sprouts and diffuse into the culture medium inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. These antibacterial compounds may influence the multiplication of contaminating pathogens. In this study the antimicrobial effects of 55 different homogenized sprouts were investigated with agar well diffusion method on human pathogenic bacteria. Homogenizates of different radish, early kohlrabi, and red cabbage sprouts caused inhibitory zone around the wells on the surface of inoculated agar plates. Mustard, zucchini, medical (German) chamomile, spicy fenugreek, and adzuki bean sprouts had antimicrobial effect only against a few human pathogenic bacteria. Twenty-nine other spicy and vegetable sprouts had no antibacterial activity against the investigated human pathogens. The results suggest that a few sprouts have antimicrobial properties, but different cultivars of the same species have different effects against different bacterial strains. The sprouts of radish cultivars contained the most effective antibacterial compounds
