An Unusual Cyst

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to increase awareness of Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) and its characteristics in order to enhance accurate diagnosis, and initiate earlier intervention. Method: A PubMed literature search was conducted with search terms Merkel Cell Carcinoma, clinical presentation, and treatment. Five pertinent articles were retrieved and served as the basis for this clinical review. Results: Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer, has a poor prognosis with over one third of patients dying from the disease after diagnosis.1 Conclusion: The poor prognosis of MCC can sometimes be attributed to a delay in diagnosis. Therefore, it is important to recognize the clinical presentation as well as the risk factors of this cancer in order to make the appropriate diagnosis. Earlier recognition of the disease will ultimately lead to earlier intervention and better outcomes for the patient
