alphabeta sequence of F is IS31

    Get PDF
Previous studies have shown that there is a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) segment, of length 1.3 kb and denoted as the alphabeta sequence, which occurs twice on the F plasmid at corrdinates 93.2 to 94.5/OF kb and 13.7 to 15.0F kb. In the present investigation, heteroduplexes were prepared between a phage DNA carrying the insertion sequence IS3 and suitable F-prime DNAs. The hybrids formed show that IS3 is the same as alphabeta. This result plus previous studies support the view that: (i) the insertion sequence IS2 and IS3 occur on F and, in multiple copies, on the main bacterial chromosome of Escherichia coli K-12; and (ii)these IS sequences on the main bacterial chromosomes are hot spots for Hfr formation by reciprocal recombination with the corresponding sequences of F

Spirituality and Transformational Learning: How Urban Residents Abandoned a Life of Violence

    Get PDF
Community violence has been a perpetual issue among disenfranchised, African American, urban youth around the world. Many authors argue that high rates of violence among these youth are due to macro-structural characteristics such as inequality, segregation, racial discrimination, and poverty. These macro-structural issues place stressors (social disorganization, joblessness, alienation, mistrust of police, etc.) upon inner-city neighborhoods. Previous research also infers that African American men lack the ability to non-violently cope with these stressors and strains. Thus, this qualitative narrative study investigated the role of spirituality in the transformational process of nine urban, African American men, who had abandoned a life of violence. The purpose of the study was to find out “how” spirituality aided these men in transforming from a lifestyle of violence. The study found that early childhood trauma, along with resentments and feelings of lack, and silenced emotions eventually, caused the participants acceptance, love and protection from the streets. However, living a violent street life often led to internal conflicts and the development of addictions. When the participants found themselves facing significant jail/prison time, it facilitated a process of reflection and an openness to spirituality. The spiritual quest of these individuals then led to feelings of acceptance, a renewed a sense of individual identity, provided vital networks of social support, facilitated a trusting relationship between the participants and the Creator, and provided a sense of connection with the community

Constructing Mr. Darcy : tradition, gender, and silent spaces in Jane Austen's Pride and prejudice.

The reality of Jane Austen's characters in Pride and Prejudice is socially constructed; their goals and actions become a typification of society's institutions and conventions. Examining Austen's pivotal characters, with a particular focus on Fitzwilliam Darcy, reveals that each is a product of a socio-cultural determinism as they reflect social institutions and represent cultural conventions. Gender categorizes social interactions in everyday life. As individuals act out gendered prescripts and expectations, they create gendered systems of dominance and power. These learned patterns of gender norms and roles are carried out in everyday life with "masculine" and "feminine" perpetuated as divergent and oppositional. Austen's Mr. Darcy is the product of the social construction of gender. Darcy's actions and self-representation reflect a historicity and ideology that is founded on gendered power relations. His is the ideology of patriarchy which guarantees the hegemonic position of men and the oppression of women. Language establishes and maintains the connection between personal identity and gender identity that produces the problem of masculine/feminine duality. In an effort to recast the prevailing masculine rhetorical structures that have defined language and society, Austen creates, in Pride and Prejudice, a model of feminine writing that deconstructs the repressive structures of thinking that invent gender inequality. Jane Austen offers us a new manner of masculinity in the "transformation" of Fitzwilliam Darcy and a feminist's recasting of relations between genders

Higher Dimensional Coulomb Gases and Renormalized Energy Functionals

Structure has slightly changed, details and corrections have been added to some of the proofs. We consider a classical system of n charged particles in an external confining potential, in any dimension d larger than 2. The particles interact via pairwise repulsive Coulomb forces and the coupling parameter scales like the inverse of n (mean-field scaling). By a suitable splitting of the Hamiltonian, we extract the next to leading order term in the ground state energy, beyond the mean-field limit. We show that this next order term, which characterizes the fluctuations of the system, is governed by a new "renormalized energy" functional providing a way to compute the total Coulomb energy of a jellium (i.e. an infinite set of point charges screened by a uniform neutralizing background), in any dimension. The renormalization that cuts out the infinite part of the energy is achieved by smearing out the point charges at a small scale, as in Onsager's lemma. We obtain consequences for the statistical mechanics of the Coulomb gas: next to leading order asymptotic expansion of the free energy or partition function, characterizations of the Gibbs measures, estimates on the local charge fluctuations and factorization estimates for reduced densities. This extends results of Sandier and Serfaty to dimension higher than two by an alternative approach

Tinjauan Proses dan Teknik Flameworking pada Limbah Kaca

    Get PDF

A middleware for a large array of cameras

    No full text
Large arrays of cameras are increasingly being employed for producing high quality image sequences needed for motion analysis research. This leads to the logistical problem with coordination and control of a large number of cameras. In this paper, we used a lightweight multi-agent system for coordinating such camera arrays. The agent framework provides more than a remote sensor access API. It allows reconfigurable and transparent access to cameras, as well as software agents capable of intelligent processing. Furthermore, it eases maintenance by encouraging code reuse. Additionally, our agent system includes an automatic discovery mechanism at startup, and multiple language bindings. Performance tests showed the lightweight nature of the framework while validating its correctness and scalability. Two different camera agents were implemented to provide access to a large array of distributed cameras. Correct operation of these camera agents was confirmed via several image processing agents

The Adsorption of Hydrogen, Ethylene and Ethane by Tin Oxide

    Get PDF
The adsorption of hydrogen, ethylene and ethane by tin oxide has been studied at several temperatures. Calculations of the adsorption magnitudes have been made on the assumption that helium is not adsorbed. The tin oxide used has been found to be very stable and is easily reproducible. The problem is being extended to include the study of the catalytic influence of the oxide upon the velocity of the reaction: C2H4 + H2 ⇔ C2H6
