Situationally edited empathy: an effect of socio-economic structure on individual choice
Criminological theory still operates with deficient models of the offender as agent, and of social influences on the agentâs decision-making process. This paper takes one âemotionâ, empathy, which is theoretically of considerable importance in influencing the choices made by agents; particularly those involving criminal or otherwise harmful action. Using a framework not of rational action, but of ârationalised actionâ, the paper considers some of the effects on individual psychology of social, economic, political and cultural structure. It is suggested that the climate-setting effects of these structures promote normative definitions of social situations which allow unempathic, harmful action to be rationalised through the situational editing of empathy. The âcrime is normalâ argument can therefore be extended to include the recognition that the uncompassionate state of mind of the criminal actor is a reflection of the self-interested values which govern non-criminal action in wider society
The Anatomy of the Facial Vein: Implications for Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Procedures
Background: Anatomical knowledge of the facial vasculature is crucial for successful plastic, reconstructive, and minimally invasive procedures of the face. Whereas the majority of previous investigations focused on facial arteries, the precise course, variability, and relationship with adjacent structures of the facial vein have been widely neglected. Methods: Seventy-two fresh frozen human cephalic cadavers (32 male and 40 female cadavers;mean age, 75.2 +/- 10.9 years;mean body mass index, 24.2 +/- 6.6 kg/m(2);99 percent Caucasian ethnicity) were investigated by means of layer-by-layer anatomical dissection. In addition, 10 cephalic specimens were investigated using contrast agent-enhanced computed tomographic imaging. Results: The facial vein displayed a constant course in relation to the adjacent anatomical structures. The vein was identified posterior to the facial artery, anterior to the parotid duct, and deep to the zygomaticus major muscle. The angular vein formed the lateral boundary of the deep medial cheek fat and the premaxillary space, and the medial boundary of the deep lateral cheek fat and the suborbicularis oculi fat. The mean distance of the inferior and superior labial veins, of the deep facial vein, and of the angular vein from the inferior orbital margin was 51.6 +/- 3.1, 42.6 +/- 2.3, 27.4 +/- 3.0, and 4.2 +/- 0.7 mm, respectively. Conclusions: This work provides detailed information on the course of the facial vein in relation to neighboring structures. The presented clinically relevant anatomical observations and descriptions of landmarks will serve as helpful information for plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgeons
Smoking in asthma is associated with elevated levels of corticosteroid resistant sputum cytokinesâan exploratory study
<p>Background: Current cigarette smoking is associated with reduced acute responses to corticosteroids and worse clinical outcomes in stable chronic asthma. The mechanism by which current smoking promotes this altered behavior is currently unclear. Whilst cytokines can induce corticosteroid insensitivity in-vitro, how current and former smoking affects airway cytokine concentrations and their responses to oral corticosteroids in stable chronic asthma is unclear.</p>
<p>Objectives: To examine blood and sputum cytokine concentrations in never, ex and current smokers with asthma before and after oral corticosteroids.</p>
<p>Methods: Exploratory study utilizing two weeks of oral dexamethasone (equivalent to 40 mg/day prednisolone) in 22 current, 21 never and 10 ex-smokers with asthma. Induced sputum supernatant and plasma was obtained before and after oral dexamethasone. 25 cytokines were measured by multiplex microbead system (Invitrogen, UK) on a Luminex platform.</p>
<p>Results: Smokers with asthma had elevated sputum cytokine interleukin (IL) -6, -7, and -12 concentrations compared to never smokers with asthma. Few sputum cytokine concentrations changed in response to dexamethasone IL-17 and IFNα increased in smokers, CCL4 increased in never smokers and CCL5 and CXCL10 reduced in ex-smokers with asthma. Ex-smokers with asthma appeared to have evidence of an ongoing corticosteroid resistant elevation of cytokines despite smoking cessation. Several plasma cytokines were lower in smokers wi</p>
<p>Conclusion: Cigarette smoking in asthma is associated with a corticosteroid insensitive increase in multiple airway cytokines. Distinct airway cytokine profiles are present in current smokers and never smokers with asthma and could provide an explanatory mechanism for the altered clinical behavior observed in smokers with asthma.</p>

Two new hybrid approaches are presented, using the penetrating power of X-rays to increase the depth of optical imaging. Foremost, we demonstrate the excitation by X-rays of quantum-dots (QD) emitting in the near-infrared (NIR), using a clinical X-ray system to map the distribution of QDs at depth in whole mouse. We elicit a clear, spatially-resolved NIR signal from deep organs (brain, liver and kidney) with short (1 second) exposures and tolerable radiation doses that will permit future in vivo applications. Furthermore, X-ray-excited endogenous emission is also detected from whole mouse. The use of keV X-rays to excite emission from QDs and tissue represent novel biomedical imaging technologies, and exploit emerging QDs as optical probes for spatial-temporal molecular imaging at greater depth than previously possible.Peer reviewe
Heuristic derivation of continuum kinetic equations from microscopic dynamics
We present an approximate and heuristic scheme for the derivation of
continuum kinetic equations from microscopic dynamics for stochastic,
interacting systems. The method consists of a mean-field type, decoupled
approximation of the master equation followed by the `naive' continuum limit.
The Ising model and driven diffusive systems are used as illustrations. The
equations derived are in agreement with other approaches, and consequences of
the microscopic dependences of coarse-grained parameters compare favorably with
exact or high-temperature expansions. The method is valuable when more
systematic and rigorous approaches fail, and when microscopic inputs in the

Electronic structure of Co_xTiSe_2 and Cr_xTiSe_2
The results of investigations of intercalated compounds Cr_xTiSe_2 and
Co_xTiSe_2 by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray emission
spectroscopy (XES) are presented. The data obtained are compared with
theoretical results of spin-polarized band structure calculations. A good
agreement between theoretical and experimental data for the electronic
structure of the investigated materials has been observed. The interplay
between the M3d--Ti3d hybridization (M=Cr, Co) and the magnetic moment at the M
site is discussed. A 0.9 eV large splitting of the core Cr2p{3/2} level was
observed, which reveals a strong exchange magnetic interaction of 3d-2p
electrons of Cr. In the case of a strong localization of the Cr3d electrons
(for x<0.25), the broadening of the CrL spectra into the region of the states
above the nominal Fermi level was observed and attributed to X-ray re-emission.
The measured kinetic properties are in good accordance with spectral

Critical specific heats of the N-vector spin models on the sc and the bcc lattices
We have computed through order the high-temperature expansions
for the nearest-neighbor spin correlation function of the
classical N-vector model, with general N, on the simple-cubic and on the
body-centered-cubic lattices.
For this model, also known in quantum field theory as the lattice O(N)
nonlinear sigma model, we have presented in previous papers extended expansions
of the susceptibility, of its second field derivative and of the second moment
of the correlation function.
Here we study the internal specific energy and the specific heat
, obtaining new estimates of the critical parameters and therefore
a more accurate direct test of the hyperscaling relation on a range of values of the spin dimensionality N, including N=0
[the self-avoiding walk model], N=1 [the Ising spin 1/2 model], N=2 [the XY
model], N=3 [the classical Heisenberg model]. By the newly extended series, we
also compute the universal combination of critical amplitudes usually denoted

On the Occurrence of Finite-Time-Singularities in Epidemic Models of Rupture, Earthquakes and Starquakes
We present a new kind of critical stochastic finite-time-singularity, relying
on the interplay between long-memory and extreme fluctuations. We illustrate it
on the well-established epidemic-type aftershock (ETAS) model for aftershocks,
based solely on the most solidly documented stylized facts of seismicity
(clustering in space and in time and power law Gutenberg-Richter distribution
of earthquake energies). This theory accounts for the main observations (power
law acceleration and discrete scale invariant structure) of critical rupture of
heterogeneous materials, of the largest sequence of starquakes ever attributed

Spatial and temporal variability of the concentration field from localized releases in a regular building array
Spatial and temporal fluctuations in the concentration field from an ensemble of continuous point-source releases in a regular building array are analyzed from data generated by direct numerical simulations. The release is of a passive scalar under conditions of neutral stability. Results are related to the underlying flow structure by contrasting data for an imposed wind direction of 0 deg and 45 deg relative to the buildings. Furthermore, the effects of distance from the source and vicinity to the plume centreline on the spatial and temporal variability are documented. The general picture that emerges is that this particular geometry splits the flow domain into segments (e.g. âstreetsâ and âintersectionsâ) in each of which the air is, to a first approximation, well mixed. Notable exceptions to this general rule include regions close to the source, near the plume edge, and in unobstructed channels when the flow is aligned. In the oblique (45 deg) case the strongly three-dimensional nature of the flow enhances mixing of a scalar within the canopy leading to reduced temporal and spatial concentration fluctuations within the plume core. These fluctuations are in general larger for the parallel flow (0 deg) case, especially so in the long unobstructed channels. Due to the more complex flow structure in the canyon-type streets behind buildings, fluctuations are lower than in the open channels, though still substantially larger than for oblique flow. These results are relevant to the formulation of simple models for dispersion in urban areas and to the quantification of the uncertainties in their predictions
Simulations of lattice animals and trees
The scaling behaviour of randomly branched polymers in a good solvent is
studied in two to nine dimensions, using as microscopic models lattice animals
and lattice trees on simple hypercubic lattices. As a stochastic sampling
method we use a biased sequential sampling algorithm with re-sampling, similar
to the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM) used extensively for linear
polymers. Essentially we start simulating percolation clusters (either site or
bond), re-weigh them according to the animal (tree) ensemble, and prune or
branch the further growth according to a heuristic fitness function. In
contrast to previous applications of PERM, this fitness function is {\it not}
the weight with which the actual configuration would contribute to the
partition sum, but is closely related to it. We obtain high statistics of
animals with up to several thousand sites in all dimension 2 <= d <= 9. In
addition to the partition sum (number of different animals) we estimate
gyration radii and numbers of perimeter sites. In all dimensions we verify the
Parisi-Sourlas prediction, and we verify all exactly known critical exponents
in dimensions 2, 3, 4, and >= 8. In addition, we present the hitherto most
precise estimates for growth constants in d >= 3. For clusters with one site
attached to an attractive surface, we verify the superuniversality of the
cross-over exponent at the adsorption transition predicted by Janssen and
Lyssy. Finally, we discuss the collapse of animals and trees, arguing that our
present version of the algorithm is also efficient for some of the models
studied in this context, but showing that it is {\it not} very efficient for
