    Ion Retention and Movement in Soils With Variable Charge Colloids

    An experiment was designed to study distribution of ions in leachate, plant and soil as a function of phosphate and silicate application. Two soils containing variable charge colloids were used. Application of phosphorus and silicon reduced cation leaching. In one soil 50 percent of the calcium could not be accounted for in the leachate and plant or in N-NH4OAc extract. This calcium was "fixed" as specifically adsorbed ion on the colloid surface. Specifically adsorbed calcium resulted in a lowering of cation exchange capacity in one soil treated with 750 ppm phosphorus. A simple linear model for variable charge colloids was used to explain the experimental results

    Determinants of Organ Donor Registration Rates Among Young Americans

    In this paper I examine the factors that affect the likelihood an individual is a registered organ donor. Unlike many studies which focus on subpopulations in specific regions, I utilize national data to get a broader assessment of individuals from around the country across a number of racial and religious classifications. Using a probit model and controlling for a variety of parameters, I find that some racial and religious variables are negatively and significantly associated with organ donor registration rates, while education and being female are positively associated with organ donor registration rates. I conclude by discussing the implications of my results and the potential for future research

    Restaurant is a place to accommodate a person to fulfill his needs of hunger. But a restaurant accompanies other factors along with hunger like interior, service, acoustics, timings etc. to satisfy customers. The most prominent feature of interior is light which enhances the beauty of a place. The lighting requires to be designed properly, the more efficient luminant environment, the more customers are expected in an eating place. This study analyzes the two lighting designs in view of their energy efficiency and cost which are concluded on the price and increase in number of customers in restaurant settings. The Lahore View (R1), restaurant’s specialty is rope lights in blue color along with spot lights. The second one i.e. Jasmine restaurant (R2) is specific with its chandeliers and spot lights. The use of spot lights enhances the functionality – reduced energy consumption and efficient. The items such as rope lights and chandeliers are installed for aesthetics to attract customers. The conclusion is that lighting in R1 is more energy efficient and cost effective than R2 but the customers increase in almost equal ratio in both restaurants in changed lighting. That means the properly installed lighting can increase the business and this experiment can also be effective on other retailers

    Exploring IoT in Smart Cities: Practices, Challenges and Way Forward

    The rise of Internet of things (IoT) technology has revolutionized urban living, offering immense potential for smart cities in which smart home, smart infrastructure, and smart industry are essential aspects that contribute to the development of intelligent urban ecosystems. The integration of smart home technology raises concerns regarding data privacy and security, while smart infrastructure implementation demands robust networking and interoperability solutions. Simultaneously, deploying IoT in industrial settings faces challenges related to scalability, standardization, and data management. This research paper offers a systematic literature review of published research in the field of IoT in smart cities including 55 relevant primary studies that have been published in reputable journals and conferences. This extensive literature review explores and evaluates various aspects of smart home, smart infrastructure, and smart industry and the challenges like security and privacy, smart sensors, interoperability and standardization. We provide a unified perspective, as we seek to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of smart cities while overcoming security concerns. It then explores their potential for collective integration and impact on the development of smart cities. Furthermore, this study addresses the challenges associated with each component individually and explores their combined impact on enhancing urban efficiency and sustainability. Through a comprehensive analysis of security concerns, this research successfully integrates these IoT components in a unified approach, presenting a holistic framework for building smart cities of the future.     Profiling of RNAs from Human Islet-Derived Exosomes in a Model of Type 1 Diabetes

    Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is characterized by the immune-mediated destruction of insulin-producing islet β cells. Biomarkers capable of identifying T1D risk and dissecting disease-related heterogeneity represent an unmet clinical need. Toward the goal of informing T1D biomarker strategies, we profiled coding and noncoding RNAs in human islet-derived exosomes and identified RNAs that were differentially expressed under proinflammatory cytokine stress conditions. Human pancreatic islets were obtained from cadaveric donors and treated with/without IL-1β and IFN-γ. Total RNA and small RNA sequencing were performed from islet-derived exosomes to identify mRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and small noncoding RNAs. RNAs with a fold change ≥1.3 and a p-value <0.05 were considered as differentially expressed. mRNAs and miRNAs represented the most abundant long and small RNA species, respectively. Each of the RNA species showed altered expression patterns with cytokine treatment, and differentially expressed RNAs were predicted to be involved in insulin secretion, calcium signaling, necrosis, and apoptosis. Taken together, our data identify RNAs that are dysregulated under cytokine stress in human islet-derived exosomes, providing a comprehensive catalog of protein coding and noncoding RNAs that may serve as potential circulating biomarkers in T1D
