    A lecture paper on the role of the University Science Department in the overall development of the country.In this paper I shall attempt to explain the role that I believe a University Faculty of Science has to play in the development of a sub-^tropical country such as Zimbabwe. My brief covers the whole of science but perhaps I may be forgiven if I display a certain bias towards the biological sciences, because that is the ground on which I feel most comfortable. I shall illustrate my thesis by reference to the mode of operation of the Faculty of Science at the University of Zimbabwe

    Provenance of Permian eolian and related strata in the North American midcontinent: Tectonic and climatic controls on sediment dispersal in western tropical Pangea

    The Permian marks a time of substantial climatic and tectonic changes in the late Paleozoic. Gondwanan glaciation collapsed after its earliest Permian acme, aridification affected the equatorial region, and monsoonal conditions commenced and intensified. In western equatorial Pangea, deformation associated with the Ancestral Rocky Mountains continued, while the asynchronous collision between Laurentia and Gondwana produced the Central Pangean Mountains, including the Appalachian-Ouachita-Marathon orogens bordering eastern and southern Laurentia, completing the final stages of Pangean assembly. Permian red beds of the southern midcontinent archive an especially rich record of the Permian of western equatorial Pangea. Depositional patterns and detrital-zircon provenance from Permian strata in Kansas and Oklahoma preserve tectonic and climatic histories in this archive. Although these strata have long been assumed to record marginal-marine (e.g., deltaic, tidal) and fluvial deposition, recent and ongoing detailed facies analyses indicate a predominance of eolian-transported siliciclastic material ultimately trapped in systems that ranged from eolian (loess and eolian sand) to ephemerally wet (e.g., mud flat, wadi) in a vast sink for mud to fine-grained sand. Analyses of U-Pb isotopes of zircons for 22 samples from Lower to Upper Permian strata indicate a significant shift in provenance reflected in a reduction of Yavapai-Mazatzal and Neoproterozoic sources and increases in Grenvillian and Paleozoic sources. Lower Permian (Cisuralian) strata exhibit nearly subequal proportions of Grenvillian, Neoproterozoic, and Yavapai-Mazatzal grains, whereas primarily Grenvillian and secondarily early Paleozoic grains predominate in Guadalupian and Lopingian strata. This shift records diminishment of Ancestral Rocky Mountains (western) sources and growing predominance of sources to the south and southeast. These tectonic changes operated in concert with the growing influence of monsoonal circulation, which strengthened through Permian time. This resulted in a growing predominance of material sourced from uplifts to the south and southeast, but carried to the midcontinent by easterlies, southeasterlies, and westerlies toward the ultimate sink of the southern midcontinent.     Long-Wavelength Instability in Surface-Tension-Driven Benard Convection

    Laboratory studies reveal a deformational instability that leads to a drained region (dry spot) in an initially flat liquid layer (with a free upper surface) heated uniformly from below. This long-wavelength instability supplants hexagonal convection cells as the primary instability in viscous liquid layers that are sufficiently thin or are in microgravity. The instability occurs at a temperature gradient 34% smaller than predicted by linear stability theory.     Hilbert Lattice Equations

    There are five known classes of lattice equations that hold in every infinite dimensional Hilbert space underlying quantum systems: generalised orthoarguesian, Mayet's E_A, Godowski, Mayet-Godowski, and Mayet's E equations. We obtain a result which opens a possibility that the first two classes coincide. We devise new algorithms to generate Mayet-Godowski equations that allow us to prove that the fourth class properly includes the third. An open problem related to the last class is answered. Finally, we show some new results on the Godowski lattices characterising the third class of equations.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure

    The reproducibility of manual RV/LV ratio measurement on CT pulmonary angiography

    Objectives: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction carries elevated risk in acute pulmonary embolism (PE). An increased ratio between the size of the right and left ventricles (RV/LV ratio) is a biomarker of RV dysfunction. This study evaluated the reproducibility of RV/LV ratio measurement on CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA). Methods: 20 inpatient CTPA scans performed to assess for acute PE were retrospectively identified from a tertiary UK centre. Each scan was evaluated by 14 radiologists who provided a qualitative overall opinion on the presence of RV dysfunction and measured the RV/LV ratio. Using a threshold of 1.0, the RV/LV ratio measurements were classified as positive (≥1.0) or negative (<1.0) for RV dysfunction. Interobserver agreement was quantified using the Fleiss κ and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: Qualitative opinion of RV dysfunction showed weak agreement (κ = 0.42, 95% CI 0.37–0.46). The mean RV/LV ratio measurement for all cases was 1.28 ± 0.68 with significant variation between reporters (p < 0.001). Although agreement for RV/LV measurement was good (ICC = 0.83, 95% CI 0.73–0.91), categorisation of RV dysfunction according to RV/LV ratio measurements showed weak agreement (κ = 0.46, 95% CI 0.41–0.50). Conclusion: Both qualitative opinion and quantitative manual RV/LV ratio measurement show poor agreement for identifying RV dysfunction on CTPA. Advances in knowledge: Caution should be exerted if using manual RV/LV ratio measurements to inform clinical risk stratification and management decisions

    Persistence in a Stationary Time-series

    We study the persistence in a class of continuous stochastic processes that are stationary only under integer shifts of time. We show that under certain conditions, the persistence of such a continuous process reduces to the persistence of a corresponding discrete sequence obtained from the measurement of the process only at integer times. We then construct a specific sequence for which the persistence can be computed even though the sequence is non-Markovian. We show that this may be considered as a limiting case of persistence in the diffusion process on a hierarchical lattice.Comment: 8 pages revte

    O cultivo em aléias tem sido recomendado como alternativa para a substituição da agricultura de corte e queima, no trópico úmido, devido à grande capacidade de produção de matéria orgânica e de reciclagem de nutrientes, mas algumas dúvidas quanto à sustentabilidade e à competição interespecífica são persistentes. O objetivo no trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade da cultura do milho em um sistema de cultivo em aléias de leguminosas arbóreas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualisados, com quatro repetições dos tratamentos: aléias de sombreiro (Clitoria fairchildiana), ingá (Inga edulis), guandu (Cajanus cajan) e leucena (Leucaena leucocephala) e uma testemunha sem aléias. Foram avaliadas a remobilização de carbono e nitrogênio, massa de grãos, massa de mil grãos e competição interespecífica entre as cultivares de milho e as leguminosas. A produção de grãos foi maior nas parcelas com C. fairchildiana e L. leucocephala. A produtividade do híbrido de milho foi superior à da variedade em todos os tratamentos. A produtividade e a massa de mil grãos de milho não são negativamente afetadas pela distância da linha da leguminosa arbórea. Esse estudo conclui que o sistema de aléias com leguminosas arbóreas é uma alternativa importante ao manejo sustentável dos agroecossistemas no tropico úmido. Além disso, nessa região a produtividade em grãos na cultura do milho é favorecida no sistema de aléias preeestabelecidas com as leguminosas arbóreas sombreiro, ingá e leucena e pela utilização de genótipos eficientes no aproveitamento do nitrogênio, cujo sincronismo entre a liberação e a absorção do N aplicado por meio das leguminosas deve ser aprimorado

    Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Prognostic Evaluation of Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

    Rationale: Prognostication is important when counseling patients and defining treatment strategies in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Objectives: To determine the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics for prediction of mortality in PAH. Methods: Consecutive patients with PAH undergoing MRI were identified from the ASPIRE (Assessing the Spectrum of Pulmonary Hypertension Identified at a Referral Centre) pulmonary hypertension registry. Measurements and Main Results: During the follow-up period of 42 (range, 17–142) months 576 patients were studied and 221 (38%) died. A derivation cohort (n = 288; 115 deaths) and validation cohort (n = 288; 106 deaths) were identified. We used multivariate Cox regression and found two independent MRI predictors of death (P < 0.01): right ventricular end-systolic volume index adjusted for age and sex, and the relative area change of the pulmonary artery. A model of MRI and clinical data constructed from the derivation cohort predicted mortality in the validation cohort at 1 year (sensitivity, 70 [95% confidence interval (CI), 53–83]; specificity, 62 [95% CI, 62–68]; positive predictive value [PPV], 24 [95% CI, 16–32]; negative predictive value [NPV], 92 [95% CI, 87–96]) and at 3 years (sensitivity, 77 [95% CI, 67–85]; specificity, 73 [95% CI, 66–85]; PPV, 56 [95% CI, 47–65]; and NPV, 87 [95% CI, 81–92]). The model was more accurate in patients with idiopathic PAH at 3 years (sensitivity, 89 [95% CI, 65–84]; specificity, 76 [95% CI, 65–84]; PPV, 60 [95% CI, 46–74]; and NPV, 94 [95% CI, 85–98]). Conclusions: MRI measurements reflecting right ventricular structure and stiffness of the proximal pulmonary vasculature are independent predictors of outcome in PAH. In combination with clinical data MRI has moderate prognostic accuracy in the evaluation of patients with PAH
