First Books Month : Kate Sweeney reads from and talks about American afterlife
PodcastThis week on The Missouri Review Soundbooth we continue our First Books Series by talking to Atlanta-based nonfiction writer, Kate Sweeney. Listen in as Sweeney reads excerpts from and then discusses her new book, American afterlife: encounters in the customs of mourning. American afterlife (University of Georgia Press) explores the experiences of individual Americans involved with death in a culture where even discussing such things is practically taboo. These chapters follow ordinary people making memorial choices as well as the purveyors of those choices to investigate how we memorialize our dead, where these practices came from, and what this says about us
Janet : the shape of the hidden : collaborative video practice as research in a poetry archive
PhD ThesisThis doctoral project was guided by curiosity aroused by a cursory note written in the margins
of a poetry transcript. It is a speculative investigation into the potential significance of
ephemeral material secreted within the administrative section of the Bloodaxe Archive.
The methodological development of the research has been iterative. It was developed
through the production of collage-like video pieces that incorporate documentary-style video
footage, drawing and photography, as well as spoken word, poetry and sound. The project’s
eventual collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach unfolded through initial observational
work in the archive. The research suggests that the composite, transferable and potentially ‘ever
unfinished’1 nature of video is a useful parallel to the idea of the contemporary archive as
shifting and fragmentary.
The written thesis that accompanies the creative work disseminates my utilisation of
video making as a contemporary tool of archival research. The text also acknowledges
embodied and ephemeral ‘technologies’ associated with collaboration - such as conversation
and gesture - as key parts of the research methodology.
My search for Janet within the ephemeral materiality of the archive was a re-imagining
of the archive as a space for speculation rather than a source of truths. Ideas gathered together
in this thesis address the use of archive ephemera as a starting point for association, invention
and autobiographical reflection
Public outreach: growing and adapting with changing times
Drayton Harbor’s 2016 reopening of 810 acres of commercial, tribal, and recreational shellfish harvesting area marked a significant achievement in the efforts to improve water quality and allow year-round harvest of the productive shellfish growing area. Public outreach over the past 20 years played a critical role in engaging the local community and encouraging on-the-ground actions to reduce pollution throughout the watershed. Bacteria pollution is a complex issue requiring diverse solutions; no single fix exists. In the Drayton Harbor watershed, a variety of organizations, agencies, and community members participated in developing and carrying out a robust and diverse outreach strategy that was adapted over time. We will review the history of these key outreach players and their roles in Drayton Harbor water quality improvements. Successful outreach efforts from Whatcom County’s Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC) Program included the development of online water quality summaries, online interactive results map, community events, video shorts, and the septic system maintenance rebate program. Future outreach goals include the use of social marketing to normalize pollution prevention actions such as routine septic system maintenance. Ultimately, sustaining good water quality and safe, year-round shellfish harvest requires ongoing community engagement

Workforce Development Needs to Address Early Childhood Mental Health within the Childcare and Early School Years Setting
Supporting infant and early childhood mental health is a vital component of school readiness, but suspension or expulsion from early childhood educational settings can have a lasting impact on a child. The Pyramid Model for Social and Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children (PM) framework and Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC) are two models to address preschool suspension and expulsion, while promoting young children’s healthy social emotional development. Both models require a qualified workforce. In Maryland, several initiatives are underway to address workforce development needs and to create pipelines of professionals trained in infant and early childhood mental health. These include statewide coordination of PM and IECMHC programming, the creation of new guidelines and pipelines for IECMHC service providers, workforce development, specific focus on equity within PM and IECMHC programs statewide, and an expansion of these efforts into early elementary school

Experimental evidence that ovary and oviducal gland extracts influence male agonistic behavior in squids

The definitive version was published in Biological Bulletin 206 (2004): 1-3.Recent investigations of sensory and behavioral cues that initiate sexual selection processes in the squid Loligo pealeii have determined that egg capsules deposited on the substrate provide a strong visual and chemotactile stimulus to males, even in the absence of females (1, 2, 3). The visual stimulus of egg capsules attracts males to the eggs, and when the males touch the eggs, they encounter a chemical stimulus that leads to highly aggressive fighting behavior. We have recently demonstrated that egg capsule extracts implanted in artificial egg capsules elicit this aggressive behavior (4). In this communication, we present evidence that the salient chemical factor originates in the ovary and perhaps the oviducal gland of the female reproductive tract
