Micro-fluid exchange coupling apparatus
In a macro-fluid exchange, a hollow needle, such as a syringe needle, is provided for penetrating the fluid conduit of the animal. The syringe needle is coupled to a plenum chamber having an inlet and outlet port. The plenum chamber is coupled to the syringe needle via the intermediary of a standard quick disconnect coupling fitting. The plenum chamber is carried at the end of a drive rod which is coupled to a micrometer drive head. The micrometer drive head is slidably and pivotably coupled to a pedestal for adjusting the height and angle of inclination of the needle relative to a reference base support. The needle is positioned adjacent to the incised trachea or a blood vessel of a small animal and the micrometer drive head is operated for penetrating the fluid conduit of the animal
Measurements with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory's flight contamination monitor
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory includes a Flight Contamination Monitor
(FCM), a system of 16 radioactive calibration sources mounted to the inside of
the Observatory's forward contamination cover. The purpose of the FCM is to
verify the ground-to-orbit transfer of the Chandra flux scale, through
comparison of data acquired during the ground calibration with those obtained
in orbit, immediately prior to opening the Observatory's sun-shade door. Here
we report results of these measurements, which place limits on the change in
mirror--detector system response and, hence, on any accumulation of molecular
contamination on the mirrors' iridium-coated surfaces.Comment: 7pages,8figures,for SPIE 4012, paper 7
UHF and VHF radar observations of thunderstorms
A study of thunderstorms was made in the Summer of 1985 with the 430-MHz and 50-MHz radars at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Both radars use the 300-meter dish, which gives a beam width of less than 2 degrees even at these long wavelengths. Though the radars are steerable, only vertical beams were used in this experiment. The height resolution was 300 and 150 meters for the UHF and VHF, respectively. Lightning echoes, as well as returns from precipitation and clear-air turbulence were detected with both wavelengths. Large increases in the returned power were found to be coincident with increasing downward vertical velocities at UHF, whereas at VHF the total power returned was relatively constant during the life of a storm. This was attributed to the fact that the VHF is more sensitive to scattering from the turbulence-induced inhomogeneities in the refractive index and less sensitive to scatter from precipitation particles. On occasion, the shape of the Doppler spectra was observed to change with the occurrence of a lightning discharge in the pulse volume. Though the total power and mean reflectivity weighted Doppler velocity changed little during these events, the power is Doppler frequency bins near that corresponding to the updraft did increase substantially within a fraction of a second after a discharge was detected in the beam. This suggests some interaction between precipitation and lightning
No evidence of an 11.16 MeV 2+ state in 12C
An experiment using the 11B(3He,d)12C reaction was performed at iThemba LABS
at an incident energy of 44 MeV and analyzed with a high energy-resolution
magnetic spectrometer, to re-investigate states in 12C published in 1971. The
original investigation reported the existence of an 11.16 MeV state in 12C that
displays a 2+ nature. In the present experiment data were acquired at
laboratory angles of 25-, 30- and 35- degrees, to be as close to the c.m.
angles of the original measurements where the clearest signature of such a
state was observed. These new low background measurements revealed no evidence
of the previously reported state at 11.16 MeV in 12C
K+ to pi-mu+mu+ and doubly-charged Higgs
The rate for the lepton-number-violating decay K+ to pi- mu+mu+ is calculated
in a model which incorporates doubly-charged Higgs bosons. We find that for
reasonable values of the parameters the decay branching ratio may be as large
as 2E-16. Although this is a discouragingly small number, it is of the same

Leveraging OpenStack and Ceph for a Controlled-Access Data Cloud
While traditional HPC has and continues to satisfy most workflows, a new
generation of researchers has emerged looking for sophisticated, scalable,
on-demand, and self-service control of compute infrastructure in a cloud-like
environment. Many also seek safe harbors to operate on or store sensitive
and/or controlled-access data in a high capacity environment.
To cater to these modern users, the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute
designed and deployed Stratus, a locally-hosted cloud environment powered by
the OpenStack platform, and backed by Ceph storage. The subscription-based
service complements existing HPC systems by satisfying the following unmet
needs of our users: a) on-demand availability of compute resources, b)
long-running jobs (i.e., days), c) container-based computing with
Docker, and d) adequate security controls to comply with controlled-access data
requirements.
This document provides an in-depth look at the design of Stratus with respect
to security and compliance with the NIH's controlled-access data policy.
Emphasis is placed on lessons learned while integrating OpenStack and Ceph
features into a so-called "walled garden", and how those technologies
influenced the security design. Many features of Stratus, including tiered
secure storage with the introduction of a controlled-access data "cache",
fault-tolerant live-migrations, and fully integrated two-factor authentication,

The Effect of Starburst Metallicity on Bright X-Ray Binary Formation Pathways
We investigate the characteristics of young ( 1e36
erg/s) High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) and find the population to be strongly
metallicity-dependent. We separate the model populations among two distinct
formation pathways: (1) systems undergoing active Roche Lobe Overflow (RLO),
and (2) wind accretion systems with donors in the (super)giant (SG) stage,
which we find to dominate the HMXB population. We find metallicity to primarily
affect the number of systems which move through each formation pathway, rather
than the observable parameters of systems which move through each individual
pathway. We discuss the most important model parameters affecting the HMXB
population at both low and high metallicities. Using these results, we show
that (1) the population of ultra-luminous X-Ray sources can be consistently
described by very bright HMXBs which undergo stable Roche Lobe overflow with
mild super-Eddington accretion and (2) the HMXB population of the bright
starburst galaxy NGC~1569 is likely dominated by one extremely metal-poor

On the Nature of the Bright Short-Period X-ray Source in the Circinus Galaxy Field
The spectrum and light curve of the bright X-ray source CG X-1 in the field
of the Circinus galaxy are re-examined. Previous analyses have concluded that
the source is an accreting black hole of about 50 solar masses although it was
noted that the light curve resembles that of an AM Her system. Here we show
that the short period and an assumed main sequence companion constrain the mass
of the companion to less than one solar mass. Further a possible eclipse seen
during one of the Chandra observations and a subsequent XMM-Newton observation
constrains the mass of the compact object to less than about 60 solar masses.
If such a system lies in the Circinus galaxy, then the accreting object must
either radiate anisotropically or strongly violate the Eddington limit. Even if
the emission is beamed, then the companion star which intercepts this flux
during eclipse will be driven out of thermal equilibrium and evaporate within
about 1000 years. We find that the observations cannot rule out an AM Her
system in the Milky Way and that such a system can account for the variations

On the nature of the ultraluminous X-ray transient in Cen~A (NGC 5128)
We combine 9 ROSAT, 9 Chandra, and 2 XMM-Newton observations of the Cen~A
galaxy to obtain the X-ray light curve of 1RXH J132519.8-430312 (=CXOU
J132519.9430317) spanning 1990 to 2003. The source reached a peak 0.1-2.4
keV flux F_X>10^{-12} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} during a 10~day span in 1995 July.
The inferred peak isotropic luminosity of the source therefore exceeded 3
10^{39} ergs s^{-1}, which places the source in the class of ultra-luminous
X-ray sources. Coherent pulsations at 13.264 Hz are detected during a second
bright episode (F_X >3 times 10^{-13} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}) in 1999 December.
The source is detected and varies significantly within three additional
observations but is below the detection threshold in 7 observations. The X-ray
spectrum in 1999 December is best described as a cut-off power law or a
disk-blackbody (multi-colored disk). We also detect an optical source, m_F555W
~ 24.1 mag, within the Chandra error circle of 1RXH J132519.8-430312 in HST
images taken 195~days before the nearest X-ray observation. The optical
brightness of this source is consistent with a late O or early B star at the
distance of Cen A. If the optical source is the counterpart, then the X-ray and
optical behavior of 1RXH J132519.8-430312 are similar to the transient Be/X-ray

Polarimetric clutter modeling: Theory and application
The two-layer anisotropic random medium model is used to investigate fully polarimetric scattering properties of earth terrain media. The polarization covariance matrices for the untilted and tilted uniaxial random medium are evaluated using the strong fluctuation theory and distorted Born approximation. In order to account for the azimuthal randomness in the growth direction of leaves in tree and grass fields, an averaging scheme over the azimuthal direction is also applied. It is found that characteristics of terrain clutter can be identified through the analysis of each element of the covariance matrix. Theoretical results are illustrated by the comparison with experimental data provided by MIT Lincoln Laboratory for tree and grass fields
