Potential one-forms for hyperk\"ahler structures with torsion
It is shown that an HKT-space with closed parallel potential 1-form has
-symmetry. Every locally conformally hyperk\"ahler manifold
generates this type of geometry. The HKT-spaces with closed parallel potential
1-form arising in this way are characterized by their symmetries and an

Advances in understanding large-scale responses of the water cycle to climate change
Globally, thermodynamics explains an increase in atmospheric water vapor with warming of around 7%/°C near to the surface. In contrast, global precipitation and evaporation are constrained by the Earth's energy balance to increase at âŒ2â3%/°C. However, this rate of increase is suppressed by rapid atmospheric adjustments in response to greenhouse gases and absorbing aerosols that directly alter the atmospheric energy budget. Rapid adjustments to forcings, cooling effects from scattering aerosol, and observational uncertainty can explain why observed global precipitation responses are currently difficult to detect but are expected to emerge and accelerate as warming increases and aerosol forcing diminishes. Precipitation increases with warming are expected to be smaller over land than ocean due to limitations on moisture convergence, exacerbated by feedbacks and affected by rapid adjustments. Thermodynamic increases in atmospheric moisture fluxes amplify wet and dry events, driving an intensification of precipitation extremes. The rate of intensification can deviate from a simple thermodynamic response due to inâstorm and largerâscale feedback processes, while changes in largeâscale dynamics and catchment characteristics further modulate the frequency of flooding in response to precipitation increases. Changes in atmospheric circulation in response to radiative forcing and evolving surface temperature patterns are capable of dominating water cycle changes in some regions. Moreover, the direct impact of human activities on the water cycle through water abstraction, irrigation, and land use change is already a significant component of regional water cycle change and is expected to further increase in importance as water demand grows with global population

A novel mouse model of Campylobacter jejuni enteropathy and diarrhea
Campylobacter infections are among the leading bacterial causes of diarrhea and of âenvironmental enteropathyâ (EE) and growth failure worldwide. However, the lack of an inexpensive small animal model of enteric disease with Campylobacter has been a major limitation for understanding its pathogenesis, interventions or vaccine development. We describe a robust standard mouse model that can exhibit reproducible bloody diarrhea or growth failure, depending on the zinc or protein deficient diet and on antibiotic alteration of normal microbiota prior to infection. Zinc deficiency and the use of antibiotics create a niche for Campylobacter infection to establish by narrowing the metabolic flexibility of these mice for pathogen clearance and by promoting intestinal and systemic inflammation. Several biomarkers and intestinal pathology in this model also mimic those seen in human disease. This model provides a novel tool to test specific hypotheses regarding disease pathogenesis as well as vaccine development that is currently in progress
Impact of previous hepatitis B infection on the clinical outcomes from chronic hepatitis C? A population-level analysis
Chronic coinfection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) is associated with adverse liver outcomes. The clinical impact of previous HBV infection on liver disease in HCV infection is unknown. We aimed at determining any association of previous HBV infection with liver outcomes using antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAb) positivity as a marker of exposure. The Scottish Hepatitis C Clinical Database containing data for all patients attending HCV clinics in participating health boards was linked to the HBV diagnostic registry and mortality data from Information Services Division, Scotland. Survival analyses with competing risks were constructed for time from the first appointment to decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liverârelated mortality. Records of 8513 chronic HCV patients were included in the analyses (87 HBcAb positive and HBV surface antigen [HBsAg] positive, 1577 HBcAb positive and HBsAg negative, and 6849 HBcAb negative). Multivariate causeâspecific proportional hazards models showed previous HBV infection (HBcAb positive and HBsAg negative) significantly increased the risks of decompensated cirrhosis (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.01â1.65) and HCC (HR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.09â2.49), but not liverârelated death (HR: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.80â1.30). This is the largest study to date showing an association between previous HBV infection and certain adverse liver outcomes in HCV infection. Our analyses add significantly to evidence which suggests that HBV infection adversely affects liver health despite apparent clearance. This has important implications for HBV vaccination policy and indications for prioritization of HCV therapy
The determination of HNO3 column amounts from tunable diode laser heterodyne spectrometer spectra taken at Jungfruajoch, Switzerland
In May of 1991 a tunable diode laser heterodyne spectrometer built by the National Physical Laboratory was operated at the International Scientific Station of the Jungfraujoch (46.5 deg N, 8.0 deg E, altitude 3.56 km). Nitric acid spectra in the region of 868 wavenumbers were recorded at sunset and sunrise on two separate days at a resolution of 0.0013 wavenumbers with a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 130:1. A vertical column amount of HNO3 of 1.61 x 10(exp 16) molecules/sq cm was determined using an atmospheric transmission model developed at the University of Denver. The mean of a number of mid-latitude, northern hemisphere profiles was used as the initial profile for the inversion. A comparison of different initial profiles provides information on the sensitivity of the retrieved column amount of 1.61 x 10(exp 16) molecules/sq cm lies within the range of values published in the World Meteorological Organization Report no. 16 (1986), but is considerably larger than the value of (0.99 - 1.29) x 10(exp 16) reported by Rinsland et al. (1991) for June during the period 1986 to 1990
The limits of social class in explaining ethnic gaps in educational attainment
This paper reports an analysis of the educational attainment and progress between age 11 and age 14 of over 14,500 students from the nationally representative Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (LSYPE). The mean attainment gap in national tests at age 14 between White British and several ethnic minority groups were large, more than three times the size of the gender gap, but at the same time only about one-third of the size of the social class gap. Socio-economic variables could account for the attainment gaps for Black African, Pakistani and Bangladeshi students, but not for Black Caribbean students. Further controls for parental and student attitudes, expectations and behaviours indicated minority ethnic groups were on average more advantaged on these measures than White British students, but this was not reflected proportionately in their levels of attainment. Black Caribbean students were distinctive as the only group making less progress than White British students between age 11 and 14 and this could not be accounted for by any of the measured contextual variables. Possible explanations for the White British-Black Caribbean gap are considered

We use the isotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background to place stringent
constraints on a possible electrical charge asymmetry of the universe. We find
the excess charge per baryon to be in the case of a uniform
distribution of charge, where is the charge of the electron. If the charge
asymmetry is inhomogeneous, the constraints will depend on the spectral index,
, of the induced magnetic field and range from

assume that the charge asymmetries of individual particle species are not
anti-correlated so as to cancel, this would imply, for photons, ; for neutrinos, ; and for heavy (light) dark

Origin of Magnetic Fields in the Universe Due to Nonminimal Gravitational-Electromagnetic Coupling
Basically the only existing theories for the creation of a magnetic field B
in the Universe are the creation of a seed field of order 10^{-20} G in spiral
galaxy which is subsequently supposedly amplified up to the observed 10^{-6} -
10^{-5} G by a dynamo process or a seed intergalactic field of magnitude
10^{-12} - 10^{-10} G which is amplified by collapse and differential rotation.
No satisfactory dynamo theory, however, exists today. We show that a 10^{-6} -
10^{-5} G magnetic field in spiral galaxies is directly obtained from a
nonminimal gravitational-electromagnetic coupling, without the need of
