    CAPABILITIES, INSTITUTIONS, PATTERNS OF DEPRIVATION

The central focus of this article is to make an attempt  to understand deprivation and inequality in the context of capability approach. The objective here is to explore the possibility of linkages between capabilities, institutions and patterns of deprivation and how capabilities within a democratic institutional framework can address the question of deprivation. In this context, the institutional framework is emphasized, because there is a strong belief that only democratic institutions provide the space necessary for capability approach to operationalise.  Democracy has the necessary support structures for capability approach to flourish. The basic premise of capability approach i.e. respecting individual freedom is guaranteed only in a democratic set up. Institutions have power because people have faith in the institutions. The research seeks to explore how institutions even in a democratic set up also cause deprivation and how capability approach is handicapped to address those problems

Internal Debates within Capability Approach Debate Between Amartya Sen And Martha Nussbaum

Capability approach is an evolving subject. While Amartya Sen developed the skeleton of the capability approach, the colleagues of Sen and his followers expanded the approach. Martha Nussbaum is a colleague of Amartya Sen who tried to use capability approach as a broad theory of social justice. Hence, she tried to be very methodological in her understanding of capability approach. She argued that a comprehensive understanding of capability approach needs us to go beyond Sen. She added a new twist to the existing understanding of the subject. She prepared a list of capabilities which she thought will provide the best conditions for human development. She claims that her list is more practical and suitable for gender justice. The present paper is an attempt to probe into the issues raised by Nussbaum. Along with this, the paper would also try to draw attention to the similar kind of lists prepared by other contemporary writers. In the concluding part it would focus on why it is a anomaly to prepare a list of capabilities in a diverse society like India

Transgenders as the ‘other’: The politics of Transgender community after the historic Supreme Court Verdict

Transgender communities are always considered not part of the citizenship project. The recent Supreme Court verdict making them very much part of the citizenshop discourse has considerably changed the situation. Even though these communities have found their presence since ancient times, yet it took such a long time to recognise their legal rights. Yet, if one closely look at the judgement, there are shortcomings and it needs further improvement. The most important drawback is that it does not address the question of their social recognition and also it does not address the unconventional transgender community in its analysis. It only recognises their legal rights

Addressing Inequality: A Theoretical Inquiry into Divergent Approaches

    Get PDF
Inequality and Justice are two important political values that have grabbed the attention of the political scientists. They have tried to demonstrate that the question of inequality and justice can be addressed through applying certain methods. For example, commodities approach, resource based approach, basic needs approach etc all make an attempt to demonstrate that inequality can be resolved. However, the paper argues that there are problems in these approaches and Sen’s argument on these approaches appear to be justified. The paper makes an modest attempt to look into these issues

India’s Contribution to Global Nuclear Disarmament: A historical survey

    No full text
India’s approach to nuclear disarmament is going through a definite shift. India has been calling for global nuclear disarmament since independence. Although, at present, India continues to express its support for any initiative that can lead up to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, the factors that contributed to its strong support for nuclear disarmament are gradually evolving. Consequentially, this will require India to reconsider its position on nuclear disarmament, a task that New Delhi continues to evade for now. But this change of factors and its consequential impact on India’s commitment to nuclear disarmament is not really a new development. An examination of the development of India’s disarmament programme captures situations that question India’s commitment to nuclear disarmament

Anticorrosion Performance of Three-Dimensional Hierarchical PANI@BN Nanohybrids

    No full text
Herein, a facile and effective dilution polymerization route was adopted to prepare microscale hierarchical PANI@BN nanohybrids with a surface textured similar to that of the aloe vera leaf. Synthesized samples were characterized by FTIR, XRD, FESEM, HRTEM, UV–visible absorption, and TGA/DTG. The hydrophobic nanohybrids with extremely rough surface offered a high barrier for moisture and corrosive environments. Potentiodynamic polarization measurement of PANI@BN/PVA coated steel showed the large shifting in corrosion potential to the anodic region with respect to PANI/PVA. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE%) of PANI@ BN/PVA coating on mild steel in 3.5 wt % of NaCl, 1 M HCl, and 1 M H2SO4 was calculated from the respective Tafel plots. The mechanistic investigation of anticorrosion performance was carried out through EIS analysis. The higher IE% of the synthesized nanohybrids with PVA coating formulation indicated that the superior anticorrosion performance on mild steel was due to synergetic effect between PANI and BN nanoparticles
