    Application of climate-smart forestry – forest manager response to the relevance of European definition and indicators

    Climate change impacts are an increasing threat to forests and current approaches to management. In 2020, Climate-smart Forestry (CSF) definition and set of indicators was published. This study further developed this work by testing the definition and indicators through a forest manager survey across fifteen member European countries. The survey covered topic areas of demographics, climate change impacts, definition and indicators assessment, as well as knowledge and communication. Overall, forest managers considered the threat of climate change to their forests as high or critical and 62% found the CSF definition clear and concise; however, the minority suggested greater simplification or nuance. Indicators were viewed as comprehensive but too numerous to integrate into management activities. Two highest ranking indicators were ‘Trees species composition’, and ‘Erosion protection and maintenance of soil condition’. Many managers were aware of suitable alternative species, but also stressed that greater resources should focus on exploring adaptable provenances. Demonstration sites and interactive guides were ranked highest for communication and dissemination; however, online multimedia tools and workshops were also ranked highly. Local perspectives on providing more relevant CSF ranged from silviculture systems, finance and funding, education and training, and social awareness, to tree species mixes and development of protective functions.     The 2018 European heatwave led to stem dehydration but not to consistent growth reductions in forests

    Heatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes

    A synthesis of novel pyrazolopyridine, benzopyranopyrazolopyridine, and oxygen-bridged pyrazolo-, tetrazolo-, benzimidazo-, and thiazolopyrimidines via Hantzsch- and Biginelli-like condensations has been developed. The ability of these compounds to inhibit Eg5 activity has been examined. The results indicate that synthetic manipulations in the monastrol thiourea moiety are inefficient

    OBJECTIVES: Dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers have some disadvantages such as light sensitivity and relatively short plasma half-lives. Stability of dihydropyrimidines analogues could be of advantage, yet they remain less well characterized. We aimed to test four newly synthesized Biginelli-type dihydropyrimidines for their calcium channel blocking activity on rat isolated aorta. METHODS: Dihydropyrimidines (compounds A-D) were prepared by the Biginelli-like three-component condensation of benzaldehydes with urea/thiourea and dimethyl or diethyl acetone-1,3-dicarboxylate, and their physicochemical properties and effects on depolarization-induced and noradrenaline-induced contractions of rat isolated aorta were evaluated. KEY FINDINGS: Dihydropyrimidines A and C blocked KCl-induced contraction only weakly (-log(IC50)=5.03 and 3.73, respectively), while dihydropyrimidine D (-log(IC50)=7.03) was almost as potent as nifedipine (-log(IC50)=8.14). Washout experiments revealed that dihydropyrimidine D may bind strongly to the L-type calcium channel or remains bound to membrane. All tested dihydropyrimidines only marginally inhibited noradrenaline-induced contractions of rat isolated aorta (20% reduction of noradrenaline E(max) ), indicating a more selective action on L-type calcium channel than nifedipine with 75% inhibition of noradrenaline E(max) at 10(-4) m nifedipine). CONCLUSIONS: Compounds A and, particularly, D are potent calcium channel blockers in vitro, with a better selectivity in inhibiting depolarization-induced arterial smooth muscle contraction than nifedipine

    Afforesting Icelandic land: a promising approach for climate smart forestry?

    Climate smart forestry (CSF) is considered as a promising approach for climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies as highlighted in several European policy documents. This paper describes a prospective approach to introducing an incentive-based scheme to facilitate the implementation of CSF through a case study in Iceland. It is argued that the payments for ecosystem services (PES) scheme allows for effective CSF management and long-term sustainability if introduced in compliance with local, cultural and social values. In a case study of an Icelandic afforestation programme, we conducted an institutional analysis of the PES scheme and assessed its effect on forest ecosystem services provision on long-term sustainability. We provide preliminary findings on the application of CSF in the 30-year-old Icelandic afforestation programme scheme. The perspectives of forest and policy experts, as well as local farmers participating in the scheme, were crucial for assessing the effectiveness of PES scheme performance in Iceland.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
