Biokol i substratblandningar
By using other types of materials for substrate mixtures for growing trees and shrubs in the nursery industry, one can reduce the use of peat. In this independent work, various materials have been used for experiments to see opportunities to find alternatives to parts in a, from the plant's point of view, good substrate.
The work has been carried out in collaboration with Essunga Plantskola AB and the purpose of the study has been to investigate the possibility of reducing the amount of peat by using the self-produced biochar in substrate mixtures with other components as well. The nursery wants to use these mixtures for its container production of shrubs. The idea of the independent work has also been to investigate whether a substrate suitable for tree cultivation can be found in Air-Pot, similar to coal macadam.
The independent work has been an experimental farm where Fagus sylvatica fk GOTTĂ
SA E and Ulmus laevis have been cultivated for four months and then compare shoot and root growth in the different substrates. Part of the experiments has also been to see how the chemical and physical properties of the substrate have changed during the experiment.
In terms of the different substrate mixtures examined, there are high hopes of finding materials that fit with the biochar. These can then be used both for container production of shrubs and for tree production in Air-Pot. A continuation of this work would have been to look at the working environment for those who work with biochar and the other materials that were included in the trials
A Recipe Based On-line Food Store
In this paper we present a recommender system design for recipe based on-line food shopping. Our system differs in two major ways from existing system. First we use an editor that labels clusters of users, such as meat lovers and vegetarians; based on what recipes they have chosen. Secondly, these clusters are available to users, so they can not only choose recipes based on their own user group but also navigate among other user groups
Social Navigation of Food Recipes
The term Social Navigation captures every-day behaviour used to find information, people, and places â namely through watching, following, and talking to people. We discuss how to design information spaces to allow for social navigation. We applied our ideas in a recipe recommendation system. In a follow-up user study, subjects state that social navigation adds value to the service: it provides for social affordance, and it helps turning a space into a social place. The study also reveals some unresolved design issues, such as the snowball effect where more and more users follow each other down the wrong path, and privacy issues
BMI and mortality in patients with new-onset type 2 diabetes: a comparison with age- and sex-matched control subjects from the general population
Objective: Type 2 diabetes is strongly associated with obesity, but the mortality risk related to elevated body weight in people with type 2 diabetes compared with people without diabetes has not been established.
Research Design and Methods: We prospectively assessed short- and long-term mortality in people with type 2 diabetes with a recorded diabetes duration â€5 years identified from the Swedish National Diabetes Registry between 1998 and 2012 and five age- and sex-matched control subjects per study participant from the general population.
Results: Over a median follow-up of 5.5 years, there were 17,546 deaths among 149,345 patients with type 2 diabetes (mean age 59.6 years [40% women]) and 68,429 deaths among 743,907 matched control subjects. Short-term all-cause mortality risk (â€5 years) displayed a U-shaped relationship with BMI, with hazard ratios (HRs) ranging from 0.81 (95% CI 0.75-0.88) among patients with diabetes and BMI 30 to <35 kg/m2 to 1.37 (95% CI 1.11-1.71) with BMI â„40 kg/m2 compared with control subjects after multiple adjustments. Long-term, all weight categories showed increased mortality, with a nadir at BMI 25 to <30 kg/m2 and a stepwise increase up to HR 2.00 (95% CI 1.58-2.54) among patients with BMI â„40 kg/m2, that was more pronounced in patients <65 years old.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the apparent paradoxical findings in other studies in this area may have been affected by reverse causality. Long-term, overweight (BMI 25 to <30 kg/m2) patients with type 2 diabetes had low excess mortality risk compared with control subjects, whereas risk in those with BMI â„40 kg/m2 was substantially increased
Early identification and delay to treatment in myocardial infarction and stroke: differences and similarities

Abstract

Background

The two major complications of atherosclerosis are acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and acute ischemic stroke. Both are life-threatening conditions characterised by the abrupt cessation of blood flow to respective organs, resulting in an infarction. Depending on the extent of the infarction, loss of organ function varies considerably.

In both conditions, it is possible to limit the extent of infarction with early intervention. In both conditions, minutes count.

This article aims to describe differences and similarities with regard to the way patients, bystanders and health care providers act in the acute phase of the two diseases with the emphasis on the pre-hospital phase.

Method

A literature search was performed on the PubMed, Embase (Ovid SP) and Cochrane Library databases.

Results

In both conditions, symptoms vary considerably. Patients appear to suspect AMI more frequently than stroke and, in the former, there is a gender gap (men suspect AMI more frequently than women).

With regard to detection of AMI and stroke at dispatch centre and in Emergency Medical Service (EMS) there is room for improvement in both conditions. The use of EMS appears to be higher in stroke but the overall delay to hospital admission is shorter in AMI. In both conditions, the fast track concept has been shown to influence the delay to treatment considerably.

In terms of diagnostic evaluation by the EMS, more supported instruments are available in AMI than in stroke. Knowledge of the importance of early treatment has been reported to influence delays in both AMI and stroke.

Conclusion

Both in AMI and stroke minutes count and therefore the fast track concept has been introduced. Time to treatment still appears to be longer in stroke than in AMI. In the future improvement in the early detection as well as further shortening to start of treatment will be in focus in both conditions. A collaboration between cardiologists and neurologists and also between pre-hospital and in-hospital care might be fruitful.</p
