Mirror-Image Stimulation Applied to Field Behavioral Studies

This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://www.jstor.org/stable/info/1935349Twenty-nine adult and yearling marmots were exposed to mirror-image stimulation. Marmots interacted intensely with their image, and the frequency of occuranaces of 22 behaviors was recorded. The four factors extracted from the behavioral data by factor analysis accounted for 88% of the total variance. Three factors were interpretable and designated "approach," "avoidance," and "sociability." Behavioral patterns were stable over time and repeatable. A plot of "avoidance" against "sociability" provides a visualization of the numerical behavioral profile of each animal which is consistent with the interpretable in terms of behavioral patterns observed in the field

Silvopasture principles and potential in Saskatchewan

Non-Peer ReviewedSilvopasture is a concept in which woody species are intentionally combined with forage crops and livestock in a production system that optimizes the productivity or the economic benefits of the trees and the animals in a sustainable way. A review is presented of silvopasture research relevant to Saskatchewan conditions. In particular, silvopasture principles, as they apply to the co-management of animals with planted or natural forest stands will be explored. Silvopasture practices that are more or less commonly found in Canada include: the use of livestock to control weeds in new plantations; the planting or management of trees and shrubs as livestock windbreaks or for shade; and livestock grazing in natural deciduous, conifer or mixed forests

About the Dirac Equation with a δ\delta potential

An elementary treatment of the Dirac Equation in the presence of a three-dimensional spherically symmetric $\delta (r-r_0)$-potential is presented. Integrating Grey and Green Infrastructure to Improve the Health and Well-being of Urban Populations

One of the enduring lessons of cities is the essential relationship between grey infrastructure (e.g., streets and buildings) and green infrastructure (e.g., parks and open spaces). The design and management of natural resources to enhance human health and well-being may be traced back thousands of years to the earliest urban civilizations. From the irrigation projects of the Indus Valley and the aqueducts of the Roman Empire to integrated systems of landscaped urban parks and street trees in contemporary times, humans have sought to harness the capacity of nature to advance city life. This article presents a systems science framework that delineates critical relationships between grey and green elements of cities and human health and well-being by modeling the complex, dynamic problem of asthma in socioeconomically disadvantaged city neighborhoods. By understanding the underlying structure of urban spaces and the importance of social interactions, urban planners, public health officials, and community members may capitalize on opportunities to leverage resources to improve the health and well-being of urban populations and promote social justice and health equity

The Exact Geometry of a Kerr-Taub-NUT Solution of String Theory

In this paper we study a solution of heterotic string theory corresponding to a rotating Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime. It has an exact CFT description as a heterotic coset model, and a Lagrangian formulation as a gauged WZNW model. It is a generalisation of a recently discussed stringy Taub-NUT solution, and is interesting as another laboratory for studying the fate of closed timelike curves and cosmological singularities in string theory. We extend the computation of the exact metric and dilaton to this rotating case, and then discuss some properties of the metric, with particular emphasis on the curvature singularities.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

Working together: the roles of geographic proximity, homophilic organizational characteristics, and neighborhood context in civic stewardship collaboration networks in Philadelphia and New York City

Available from Resilience Alliance via the DOI in this record. We examine networks of collaboration among civic environmental stewardship organizations in Philadelphia and New York City to understand which factors shape collaborative ties between organizations. Environmental issues in cities are increasingly complicated and often involve many actors, including citizens, governments, and organizations. Organizations frequently collaborate to tackle collective action problems related to environmental management. Here, we study two such networks collected as part of the U.S. Forest Service’s Stewardship Mapping and Assessment (STEW-MAP) project that monitors and maps the organizational characteristics of local environmental groups. We apply Exponential Random Graph models to demonstrate that network motifs, spatial proximity, organizational attributes, neighborhood context, and main issue focus all play different roles in explaining organizational collaboration among civic groups, but in very different ways across the two cities. Our findings reveal that civic networks are more correlated with homophily by social issues in Philadelphia, whereas civic networks in New York City are often correlated with geography proximity and homophily in land use. The comparative framework, still relatively rare in studies of environmental stewardship organizations, shows that different types of homophily, corresponding to different theoretical motivations, are at work in these cities. We conclude with some speculation as to the causes of these differences and their implications.US Forest Agenc
