Back-reaction and effective acceleration in generic LTB dust models
We provide a thorough examination of the conditions for the existence of
back-reaction and an "effective" acceleration (in the context of Buchert's
averaging formalism) in regular generic spherically symmetric
Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) dust models. By considering arbitrary spherical
comoving domains, we verify rigorously the fulfillment of these conditions
expressed in terms of suitable scalar variables that are evaluated at the
boundary of every domain. Effective deceleration necessarily occurs in all
domains in: (a) the asymptotic radial range of models converging to a FLRW
background, (b) the asymptotic time range of non-vacuum hyperbolic models, (c)
LTB self-similar solutions and (d) near a simultaneous big bang. Accelerating
domains are proven to exist in the following scenarios: (i) central vacuum
regions, (ii) central (non-vacuum) density voids, (iii) the intermediate radial
range of models converging to a FLRW background, (iv) the asymptotic radial
range of models converging to a Minkowski vacuum and (v) domains near and/or
intersecting a non-simultaneous big bang. All these scenarios occur in
hyperbolic models with negative averaged and local spatial curvature, though
scenarios (iv) and (v) are also possible in low density regions of a class of
elliptic models in which local spatial curvature is negative but its average is
positive. Rough numerical estimates between -0.003 and -0.5 were found for the
effective deceleration parameter. While the existence of accelerating domains
cannot be ruled out in models converging to an Einstein de Sitter background
and in domains undergoing gravitational collapse, the conditions for this are
very restrictive. The results obtained may provide important theoretical clues
on the effects of back-reaction and averaging in more general non-spherical

Functional anatomy of the masking level difference, an fMRI study
Introduction: Masking level differences (MLDs) are differences in the hearing threshold for the detection of a signal presented in a noise background, where either the phase of the signal or noise is reversed between ears. We use N0/Nπ to denote noise presented in-phase/out-of-phase between ears and S0/Sπ to denote a 500 Hz sine wave signal as in/out-of-phase. Signal detection level for the noise/signal combinations N0Sπ and NπS0 is typically 10-20 dB better than for N0S0. All combinations have the same spectrum, level, and duration of both the signal and the noise. Methods: Ten participants (5 female), age: 22-43, with N0Sπ-N0S0 MLDs greater than 10 dB, were imaged using a sparse BOLD fMRI sequence, with a 9 second gap (1 second quiet preceding stimuli). Band-pass (400-600 Hz) noise and an enveloped signal (.25 second tone burst, 50% duty-cycle) were used to create the stimuli. Brain maps of statistically significant regions were formed from a second-level analysis using SPM5. Results: The contrast NπS0- N0Sπ had significant regions of activation in the right pulvinar, corpus callosum, and insula bilaterally. The left inferior frontal gyrus had significant activation for contrasts N0Sπ-N0S0 and NπS0-N0S0. The contrast N0S0-N0Sπ revealed a region in the right insula, and the contrast N0S0-NπS0 had a region of significance in the left insula. Conclusion: Our results extend the view that the thalamus acts as a gating mechanism to enable dichotic listening, and suggest that MLD processing is accomplished through thalamic communication with the insula, which communicate across the corpus callosum to either enhance or diminish the binaural signal (depending on the MLD condition). The audibility improvement of the signal with both MLD conditions is likely reflected by activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus, a late stage in the what/where model of auditory processing. © 2012 Wack et al
Ideal gas sources for the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi metrics
New exact solutions emerge by replacing the dust source of the
Lem\^aitre-Tolman-Bondi metrics with a viscous fluid satisfying the monatomic
gas equation of state. The solutions have a consistent thermodynamical
interpretation. The most general transport equation of Extended Irreversible
Thermodynamics is satisfied, with phenomenological coefficients bearing a close

Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi dust spacetimes: Symmetry properties and some extensions to the dissipative case
We consider extensions of Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) spacetimes to the
dissipative case. For doing that we previously carry out a systematic study on
LTB. This study is based on two different aspects of LTB. On the one hand, a
symmetry property of LTB will be presented. On the other hand, the description
of LTB in terms of some fundamental scalar functions (structure scalars)
appearing in the orthogonal splitting of Riemann tensor will be provided. We
shall consider as "natural" generalizations of LTB (hereafter referred to as
GLTB) either those metrics admitting some similar kind of symmetry as LTB, or

Characterizing Polytobacco Use Trajectories and Their Associations With Substance Use and Mental Health Across Mid-Adolescence.
Background:Polytobacco product use is suspected to be common, dynamic across time, and increase risk for adverse behavioral outcomes. We statistically modeled characteristic types of polytobacco use trajectories during mid-adolescence and tested their prospective association with substance use and mental health problems. Methods:Adolescents (N = 3393) in Los Angeles, CA, were surveyed semiannually from 9th to 11th grade. Past 6-month combustible cigarette, e-cigarette, or hookah use (yes/no) over four assessments were analyzed using parallel growth mixture modeling to identify a parsimonious set of polytobacco use trajectories. A tobacco product use trajectory group was used to predict substance use and mental health at the fifth assessment. Results:Three profiles were identified: (1) tobacco nonusers (N = 2291, 67.5%) with the lowest use prevalence (<3%) of all products across all timepoints; (2) polyproduct users (N = 920, 27.1%) with moderate use prevalence of each product (8-35%) that escalated for combustible cigarettes but decreased for e-cigarettes and hookah across time; and (3) chronic polyproduct users (N = 182, 5.4%) with high prevalence of each product use (38-86%) that escalated for combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Nonusers, polyproduct users, and chronic polyproduct users reported successively higher alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug use and ADHD at the final follow-up, respectively. Both tobacco using groups (vs. nonusers) reported greater odds of depression and anxiety at the final follow-up but did not differ from each other. Conclusions:Adolescent polytobacco use may involve a common moderate risk trajectory and a less common high-risk chronic trajectory. Both trajectories predict substance use and mental health symptomology. Implications:Variation in use and co-use of combustible cigarette, e-cigarette, and hookah use in mid-adolescence can be parsimoniously characterized by a small set common trajectory profiles in which polyproduct use are predominant patterns of tobacco product use, which predict adverse behavioral outcomes. Prevention and policy addressing polytobacco use (relative to single product use) may be optimal tobacco control strategies for youth, which may in turn prevent other forms of substance use and mental health problems
TRX: A Formally Verified Parser Interpreter
Parsing is an important problem in computer science and yet surprisingly
little attention has been devoted to its formal verification. In this paper, we
present TRX: a parser interpreter formally developed in the proof assistant
Coq, capable of producing formally correct parsers. We are using parsing
expression grammars (PEGs), a formalism essentially representing recursive
descent parsing, which we consider an attractive alternative to context-free
grammars (CFGs). From this formalization we can extract a parser for an
arbitrary PEG grammar with the warranty of total correctness, i.e., the
resulting parser is terminating and correct with respect to its grammar and the
