Phylogeography and epidemic history of hepatitis C virus genotype 4 in Africa

HCV genotype 4 is prevalent in many African countries, yet little is known about the genotype׳s epidemic history on the continent. We present a comprehensive study of the molecular epidemiology of genotype 4. To address the deficit of data from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) we PCR amplified 60 new HCV isolates from the DRC, resulting in 33 core- and 48 NS5B-region sequences. Our data, together with genotype 4 database sequences, were analysed using Bayesian phylogenetic approaches. We find three well-supported intra-genotypic lineages and estimate that the genotype 4 common ancestor existed around 1733 (1650-1805). We show that genotype 4 originated in central Africa and that multiple lineages have been exported to north Africa since ~1850, including subtype 4a which dominates the epidemic in Egypt. We speculate on the causes of the historical intra-continental spread of genotype 4, including population movements during World War 2

Le développement économique de la République populaire démocratique de Corée

The economic development of the people's democratic republic of Korea. Since the war (1950-1953) which had entirely devastated its territory, the People's Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) has known an outstandingly quick development. This development, made in the context of the building of a socialist society , has been eased by some factors : it enjoys wealthy mines and very abundant power ; the national sweaters of labour were little numerous; it inherited a colonial-type industrialization (equipment and industrial savoir-faire) from the Japanese; the war had unexpected results for its « sweeping away » lessened the social and material obstacles to the country's socialization and rebuilding. An already working industry allowed to reduce the period when the accumulation effort was mainly asked to the countryside and to bring there the technical revolution (irrigation, mechanization, general use of manure and chemical products) directly after the agricultural collectivization. The agricultural deficit has been suppressed. The internal industrial lack of balance has been fully overcome (chemicals and metal working were developed in first; the country labour force was called up for the local low-technology small industries). The national output can supply the nine tenths of the industrial equipments. Industry was geographically decentralized. The towns and villages entirely destructed in 1953 were rebuilt and the villages brought together.Depuis la guerre (1950-1953) qui avait entièrement ravagé son territoire, la République populaire démocratique de Corée (Corée du Nord) a connu un développement exceptionnellement rapide. Ce développement, dans le cadre de la construction d'une société socialiste, a été facilité par un certain nombre de facteurs : richesses minérales et énergétiques exceptionnelles ; héritage de l'industrialisation japonaise de type colonial (équipement et savoir- faire industriel) ; faiblesse des classes exploiteuses nationales ; effets imprévus de la guerre, qui, en faisant « table rase », ont réduit les obstacles, sociaux et matériels, à la socialisation et au remodelage du pays. L'existence d'une base industrielle préalable a permis de réduire la période où l'effort d'accumulation a été demandé principalement aux campagnes, et d'y introduire la révolution technique (irrigation, mécanisation, emploi généralisé des engrais et produits chimiques) aussitôt après la collectivisation agricole. Le déficit agricole a été résorbé. Le déséquilibre interne de l'industrie a été largement surmonté (développement prioritaire des industries mécaniques et chimiques; mobilisation de la main-d'œuvre rurale latente dans les industries légères locales à technique plus rudimentaire) . La production nationale est en mesure de fournir les neuf dixièmes des équipements industriels. L'industrie s'est décentralisée géographiquement.
