    High Density Atmospheric Plasma Jet Devices by Jet-to-Jet Interaction

    Disclosed is an atmospheric pressure plasma jet device for use in a variety of applications. The disclosed system can include a conduit tubing array that includes multiple individual tubes configured in a honeycomb structure. By altering the linear velocity of the system\u27s gas source, the system can produce multiple non-thermal atmospheric plasma jets that can interact in such a way as to create a single plasma jet as opposed to multiple collimated plasma jets. The single jet formed by the interaction of the multiple conduits can exhibit an increased optical intensity and energy compared to either a plasma jet emitted from a single conduit or well-collimated plasma jets emitted from multiple conduits

    HI properties and star formation history of a fly-by pair of blue compact dwarf galaxies

    A fly-by interaction has been suggested to be one of the major explanations for enhanced star formation in blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, yet no direct evidence for this scenario has been found to date. In the HI Parkes all-sky survey (HIPASS), ESO 435-IG 020 and ESO 435- G 016, a BCD pair were found in a common, extended gas envelope of atomic hydrogen, providing an ideal case to test the hypothesis that the starburst in BCDs can be indeed triggered by a fly-by interaction. Using high-resolution data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we investigated HI properties and the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the BCD pair to study their interaction and star formation histories. The high-resolution HI data of both BCDs reveal a number of peculiarities, which are suggestive of tidal perturbation. Meanwhile, 40% of the HIPASS flux is not accounted for in the ATCA observations with no HI gas bridge found between the two BCDs. Intriguingly, in the residual of the HIPASS and the ATCA data, 10% of the missing flux appears to be located between the two BCDs. While the SED-based age of the most dominant young stellar population is old enough to have originated from the interaction with any neighbors (including the other of the two BCDs), the most recent star formation activity traced by strong Hα\alpha emission in ESO 435-IG 020 and the shear motion of gas in ESO 435- G 016, suggest a more recent or current tidal interaction. Based on these and the residual emission between the HIPASS and the ATCA data, we propose an interaction between the two BCDs as the origin of their recently enhanced star formation activity. The shear motion on the gas disk, potentially with re-accretion of the stripped gas, could be responsible for the active star formation in this BCD pair.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&

    We present UBVI surface photometry for 20.'5 X 20.'5 area of a late-type spiral galaxy NGC 300. In order to understand the morphological properties and luminosity distribution characteristics of NGC 300, we have derived isophotal maps, surface brightness profiles, ellipticity profiles, position angle profiles, and color profiles. By merging the I-band data of our surface brightness measurements with those of Boeker et al. (2002) based on Hubble Space Telescope observations, we have made combined I-band surface brightness profiles for the region of 0."02 < r < 500" and decomposed the profiles into three components: a nucleus, a bulge, and an exponential disk.Comment: 16 pages(cjaa209.sty), Accepted by the Chinese J.     Perspectives Provided by Leopard and Other Cat Genomes: How Diet Determined the Evolutionary History of Carnivores, Omnivores, and Herbivores

    Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies have enabled humans to generate and investigate the genomes of wild species. This includes the big cat family, such as tigers, lions, and leopards. Adding the first high quality leopard genome, we have performed an in-depth comparative analysis to identify the genomic signatures in the evolution of felid to become the top predators on land. Our study focused on how the carnivore genomes, as compared to the omnivore or herbivore genomes, shared evolutionary adaptations in genes associated with nutrient metabolism, muscle strength, agility, and other traits responsible for hunting and meat digestion. We found genetic evidence that genomes represent what animals eat through modifying genes. Highly conserved genetically relevant regions were discovered in genomes at the family level. Also, the Felidae family genomes exhibited low levels of genetic diversity associated with decreased population sizes, presumably because of their strict diet, suggesting their vulnerability and critical conservation status. Our findings can be used for human health enhancement, since we share the same genes as cats with some variation. This is an example how wildlife genomes can be a critical resource for human evolution, providing key genetic marker information for disease treatment

    Rapid Hydrothermal Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanowires by Annealing Methods on Seed Layers

    Well-aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire arrays were successfully synthesized on a glass substrate using the rapid microwave heating process. The ZnO seed layers were produced by spinning the precursor solutions onto the substrate. Among coatings, the ZnO seed layers were annealed at 100°C for 5 minutes to ensure particle adhesion to the glass surface in air, nitrogen, and vacuum atmospheres. The annealing treatment of the ZnO seed layer was most important for achieving the high quality of ZnO nanowire arrays as ZnO seed nanoparticles of larger than 30 nm in diameter evolve into ZnO nanowire arrays. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a single-crystalline lattice of the ZnO nanowires. Because of their low power (140 W), low operating temperatures (90°C), easy fabrication (variable microwave sintering system), and low cost (90% cost reduction compared with gas condensation methods), high quality ZnO nanowires created with the rapid microwave heating process show great promise for use in flexible solar cells and flexible display devices

    Transcendent Accountability and Pro-Community Attitudes: Assessing the Link Between Religion and Community Engagement

    Prior research has established a positive relationship between religiosity and civic engagement but focused on public religiosity rather than private religiosity without explaining the relationship. We examined private religiosity as well as public religiosity in relation to community engagement, explaining the religiosity-community engagement relationship with two understudied mechanisms: ‘‘transcendent accountability’’ (seeing oneself as accountable to God or a higher power for one’s influence on other people or the environment) and pro-community attitudes. For this examination, we applied structural equation modeling to analyze data from a nationally representative survey. We found that survey respondents who believed in a higher power, privately practiced devotional prayer and study of religious texts, and attended religious group activities (other than worship services), were more likely to report transcendent accountability to a higher power for their influence on other people and the environment. We also found that transcendent accountability was related positively to pro-community attitudes, which in turn was positively associated with community engagement. The indirect relationships between religiosity and community engagement were mostly significant. In conclusion, both private and public religious behaviors are consequential in the religiosity-civic engagement relationship, and the religiosity-linked virtue of transcendent accountability and its associated pro-community attitudes contribute to civic engagement

    Determinants of respiratory symptom development in patients with chronic airflow obstruction

    SummaryBackgroundThis study was undertaken to identify the determinants of respiratory symptom development in patients with chronic airflow obstruction (CAO).MethodsCategories of symptomatic and asymptomatic CAO were defined using questionnaire responses and spirometric results. We analyzed data obtained as part of the second South Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (Korean NHANES II).ResultsAmong 187 patients with CAO, 69 had no respiratory symptoms. CAO patients with symptoms were significantly older than those without symptoms (P=0.026), and hypertension was more common among symptomatic CAO patients than among asymptomatic CAO patients (P=0.005). According to questionnaire responses, symptomatic CAO patients had more difficulty in walking or lifting (P<0.001), required more help with personal care (P=0.01), and had poorer general health than asymptomatic CAO patients (P=0.008). Symptomatic CAO patients had higher fasting blood glucose levels than asymptomatic CAO patients (P=0.028). Symptomatic CAO patients had significantly lower forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1) (P=0.001), forced vital capacity (FVC) (P=0.008), and a ratio of FEV1/FVC than asymptomatic CAO patients (P<0.001). Statistically significant predictors of symptom development were as follows: age (odds ratio (OR) 1.04, P=0.028), hypertension (OR 4.41, P=0.008), fasting blood glucose (OR 1.02, P=0.034), FEV1 (OR 0.07, P=0.002), FVC (OR 0.08, P=0.009), FEV1/FVC (OR 0.00, P=0.001). Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed two independent factors associated with symptom development: FEV1/FVC (OR 0.001, P=0.002) and hypertension (OR 5.95, P=0.005).ConclusionsIn CAO, respiratory symptom development is significantly associated with low FEV1/FVC and the presence of hypertension

    Effect of moderate-intensity statin therapy on plaque inflammation in patients with acute coronary syndrome: A prospective interventional study evaluated by 18F-FDG PET/CT of the carotid artery

    Background: Asian patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are frequently prescribed moderate- -intensity statin in real practice, even during the early stage of ACS. Under assessment herein was the effect of moderate-intensity statin therapy on the resolution of plaque inflammation during the first month after ACS, a period with highest recurrent ischemic events, using dual time point 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT).Methods: This prospective study included statin-naĂŻve patients with ACS and non-calcified carotid plaques (≄ 3 mm on ultrasound images). Baseline FDG PET/CT images of the carotid arteries of the patients were obtained. Then, all patients received atorvastatin (20 mg/day); follow-up FDG PET/CT images of the carotid arteries were then obtained after 1 month of therapy. The primary endpoint measurement was the change in the target-to-background ratio (TBR) of the carotid artery between the initial and follow-up FDG PET/CT scans.Results: Thirteen ACS patients completed the initial and follow-up FDG PET/CT scans. Moderate-intensity statin therapy failed to reduce plaque inflammation at 1 month after ACS (TBR 1.60 ± 0.20 at baseline vs. 1.50 ± 0.40 after therapy; p = 0.422) but significantly reduced serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels (mean LDL-C 101.2 ± 21.1 mg/dL at baseline vs. 70.7 ± 12.4 mg/dL after therapy; p &lt; 0.001). Changes in the TBR and serum LDL-C levels were not correlated (r = –0.27, p = 0.243).Conclusions: Dual time point FDG PET/CT imaging demonstrates that moderate-intensity statin therapy was insufficient in suppressed plaque inflammation within the first month after ACS in Asian patients, even though achieving target LDL levels
