Antibacterial effect of orange Monascus pigment against Staphylococcus aureus
The objective of this work was to research the antibacterial effects of orange pigment, which was separated from Monascus pigments, against Staphylococcus aureus. The increase of the diameter of inhibition zone treated with orange pigment indicated that orange pigment had remarkable antibacterial activities against S. aureus. Orange pigment (10 mg ml−1) had a strong destructive effect on the membrane and structure of S. aureus by the analysis of scanning electron microscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) further demonstrated that the cell membrane was seriously damaged by orange pigment, which resulted in the leakage of protein from S. aureus cells. A significant decrease in the synthesis of DNA was also seen in S. aureus cells exposed to 10 mg ml−1 orange pigment. All in all, orange pigment showed excellent antibacterial effects against S. aureus
Force measurement on coupled flapping flags in uniform flow
An experimental study on the coupled flapping of two identical flags arranged in parallel, tandem, and staggered positions in uniform flow was conducted in a wind tunnel. The dynamic characteristics of each flag were measured using an in-house designed balance and the flapping modes were analyzed through a high-speed video recording technique and a "Spatio-Temporal Evolution" software. For the side-by-side arrangement, the dependences of the kinematic and dynamic parameters on the flow speed and on the mutual distance were observed. The results indicated that the coupling motion and dynamics of two parallel flags in uniform flow were mainly affected by their mutual position. Significant drag reductions were observed when the flags flapped in the in-phase mode for a relatively small separation. For two flags in tandem arrangement, both the upstream and downstream flags experienced a drag reduction compared to the scenario of a single flag in the same flow. Especially, for relatively large separation the upstream flag had a smaller drag coefficient than that of the downstream one. For very small separation, the drag coefficient of the upstream flag was larger than that of the downstream one. Finally, for two flags arranged in a staggered configuration, an anomalous drag distribution was found. This work provides valuable experimental data and casts insight into the coupling mechanism of multiple flexible structures in an air flow
Rapid analysis of pyrethroid insecticides in aquaculture seawater samples via membrane-assisted solvent extraction coupled with gas chromatography-electron capture detection
A simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly membrane-assisted solvent extraction (MASE) method for the extraction and preconcentration of six pyrethroid insecticides from aquaculture seawater samples followed by gas chromatography-electron capture detection (GC-ECD) was successfully proposed. The operating conditions for MASE, such as the extraction solvent, solvent volume, NaCl concentration, stirring rate, extraction time, and temperature, were optimized. Compared to conventional Florisil-solid phase extraction (SPE), higher extraction recoveries (85.9% to 105.9%) of three spiked levels of the six pyrethroid pesticides in aquaculture seawater were obtained using MASE, and the RSD values were lower than 7.9%. The limits of detection (LOD, signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)=3) and quantification (LOQ, S/N = 10) were in the range of 0.037–0.166 and 0.12–0.55 µg L-1, respectively. The results demonstrate the excellent applicability of the MASE method in analyzing the six pyrethroid pesticides in aqueous samples. The proposed method exhibited a high potential for routine monitoring analysis of pyrethroid insecticides in seawater samples
Neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions as a probe of neutron skin
The dependence between neutron-to-proton yield ratio () and neutron
skin thickness () in neutron-rich projectile induced reactions is
investigated within the framework of the Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular
Dynamics (IQMD) model. The density distribution of the Droplet model is
embedded in the initialization of the neutron and proton densities in the
present IQMD model. By adjusting the diffuseness parameter of neutron density
in the Droplet model for the projectile, the relationship between the neutron
skin thickness and the corresponding in the collisions is obtained.

for neutron-rich Ca and Ni isotopes. It is suggested that may be used
as an experimental observable to extract for neutron-rich nuclei,
which is very significant to the study of the nuclear structure of exotic

We report on a search for the decays J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c., J/Psi -->
D- e+ nu_e + c.c., and J/Psi --> D0bar e+ e- + c.c. in a sample of 5.8 * 10^7
J/Psi events collected with the BESII detector at the BEPC. No excess of signal
above background is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the
branching fractions are set: B(J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c.)<4.8*10^-5, B(J/Psi
