    The Nature of the Corporation: Implications for Ethical Governance

    The nature of the corporation has been a prolonged debate since the 19th century. The question is whether the corporation is a private entity or a public institution by nature. This paper argues that the corporation is not a purely private body, nor a purely public institution. It is a unique entity with some combined features of both private and public institutions. The corporation as a quasi-public business entity by nature has significant implications for corporate ethical governance. If nobody is actually responsible for corporate failures under the current institutional arrangements for governance, how do we ensure that the corporation is accountable, responsible and sustainable? Should the public gain some control over the corporation? The paper will discuss about public engagement in corporate governance to answer the above questions

    Modes of Thinking in Corporate Governance: In Search of Root Causes of Governance Malfunctioning

    This paper argues that the current two prevailing modes of thinking in corporate governance, the inward-looking and outward-looking modes of thinking, severely limit and constrain our understandings of corporate governance systems and problems and are thus unable to properly diagnose and rectify corporate governance defects and malfunctions in practice. The paper presents a new mode of thinking, i.e., the critically reflexive mode of thinking, to overcome the limitations of current modes of thinking. The new mode of thinking suggests that the core corporate governance issues are not purely from inside the corporation, nor solely from outside the corporation. Rather, they reside at the intersection of internal and external governance spheres interplayed by corporate powers and political, market and other key stakeholder players. With the illustration of three key exemplary theses, the paper shows distinguished understandings of corporate governance among the three modes of thinking. This critically reflexive mode of thinking points to a new direction in corporate governance research and a clearer agenda for effective corporate governance reforms

    Strategic Levers of Corporate Social Responsibility: A Supply-Demand Mapping Analysis

    Research on the correlation between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial performance has been inconclusive and often contradictory. Thus, the question of whether consumers really care about CSR becomes crucial (Öberseder, Schlegelmilch and Gruber, 2011). Theory suggests that financial gains would materialise should the attributes of CSR supplied match consumer demand. But CSR demand is likely to be latent and thus hard to define. In a quest to match CSR demand and supply, this study synthesizes consumeroriented CSR research in one framework that focuses on how consumer demand for CSR can be defined based on consumer behavior analysis and how CSR supply as strategic levers of responsibility could match the demand. The study further explores current adoption of these levers by analysing the present supply of responsibility as reported by large companies. A comparison of CSR themes in corporate reports with the model highlights the requirement for further research to define and measure optimal use of the proposed levers. This study proposes an approach to bridge the gap in academic theory between the promise of responsibility as a scarce and valuable resource and the reality of an unclear link between corporate social and financial performances

    Companies, Meet Ethical Consumers: Strategic CSR Management to Impact Consumer Choice

    Fulfilling consumer expectations of corporate social responsibility (CSR) can bring strategic advantage to firms. However, research on the topic is fragmented across disparate disciplines, and a comprehensive framework to connect CSR supply and demand is missing. As a result, firms often supply CSR that does not attract demand, as signified by pessimism about ethical consumerism in recent years and the inconclusive link between corporate financial and social performance. In this study, we propose a framework of strategic CSR management to define how a company’s supply of CSR could meet consumer demand for ethical products by aligning managerial and consumer perspectives. We then investigate empirically whether such a strategic approach, that integrates potential demand in CSR management, would influence consumer choice of products with CSR components. Our hybrid choice modeling allows the inclusion of psychological biases caused by social desirability and cynicism to increase result validity. The findings support the explanatory power of the framework and reveal that consumers prefer some CSR elements while others adversely affect choices. This study advances the understanding of strategic CSR management, its impact on consumer choice and helps managers include the right mix of CSR characteristics in their products to satisfy ethical consumers

    Molecular characterization and expression analysis of a hepcidin gene from rice field eel (Monopterus albus)

    Hepcidin is a cysteine-rich, dual-function peptide with antimicrobial activity that plays crucial roles in iron homeostasis. A few hepcidin-like genes have been isolated from teleost. Here, we have identified a hepcidin-like gene from rice field eel (RFE), Monopterus albus. Nucleotide sequences including cDNA and genomic DNA (GenBank accession numbers: FJ436808 and FJ594996, respectively) and deduced amino acid sequences were presented. In the 949 bp-long genomic sequence, two introns and three exons were identified. The full-length cDNA encodes a prepropeptide of 90 amino acid residues. RTPCR analysis suggested that hepcidin transcripts are highly abundant in the liver and kidney, less abundant in the heart, skin, brain, blood cells, intestine, spleen and stomach and undetectable in muscle. After challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila infection or iron-dextran stimulation, the hepcidin transcript levels were analyzed by RT-PCR. The results revealed that the expression of hepcidin dramatically increased at 24 h post-infection of the pathogen injection. Moreover, hepcidin mRNAs in the liver, intestine and brain were 2.4, 1.5 and 2-fold increase, respectively, compared with the control animals after 5 days in iron-dextran injected RFEs.Key words: Rice field eel, Monopterus albus, hepcidin, gene expressio

    Precise Sm-Nd and U-Pb isotopic dating of the supergiant Shizhuyuan polymetallic deposit and its host granite, SE China

    The supergiant Shizhuyuan W-Sn-Bi-Mo deposit is hosted by the Qianlishan granite, a small, highly fractionated granitic pluton (~10 km2) with multiple phases of intrusions within the Early Yanshanian granitoid province of SE China. Strong alteration of skarn and greisen that formed in the contact zone between the first and second phases of granite intrusions and Devonian limestone is responsible for the polymetallic mineralizations. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon analysis indicates that the two early phases of the Qianlishan granite formed contemporaneously at 152 ± 2 Ma. Metasomatic minerals (garnet, fluorite and wolframite) separated from the skarn and greisen yield a Sm-Nd isochron age of 149 ± 2 Ma that is interpreted as the formation age of the Shizhuyuan deposit. Therefore, the mineralization of the supergiant Shizhuyuan polymetallic deposit formed contemporaneously with, or very shortly after, the intrusion of the small, highly fractionated Qianlishan granite. © 2004 Cambridge University Press.published_or_final_versio

    Direct observation of local K variation and its correlation to electronic inhomogeneity in (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 Pnictide

    Local fluctuations in the distribution of dopant atoms are a suspected cause of nanoscale electronic disorder or phase separation observed within the pnictide superconductors. Atom probe tomography results present the first direct observations of dopant nano-clustering in a K-doped 122-phase pnictides. First-principles calculations suggest the coexistence of static magnetism and superconductivity on a lattice parameter length scale over a large range of doping concentrations. Collectively, our results provide evidence for a mixed scenario of phase coexistence and phase separation originating from variation of dopant atom experiments distroibutions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures and 1 table, accepted by Physical Review Letter 201

But, the development of simple and effective methods for creating novel assemblies of self-supported patterns of hierarchical architectures to designed materials using a suitable chemical method is important to technology and remains an attractive, but elusive goal.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The hierarchical structure of Mn<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4 </sub>with radiated spherulitic nanorods was prepared via a simple solution-based coordinated route in the presence of macrocycle polyamine, hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene (CT) with the assistance of thiourea as an additive.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This approach opens a new and facile route for the morphogenesis of Mn<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4 </sub>material and it might be extended as a novel synthetic method for the synthesis of other inorganic semiconducting nanomaterials such as metal chalcogenide semiconductors with novel morphology and complex form, since it has been shown that thiourea can be used as an effective additive and the number of such water-soluble macrocyclic polyamines also makes it possible to provide various kinds of ligands for different metals in homogeneous water system.</p

    Myosin Va Participates in Acrosomal Formation and Nuclear Morphogenesis during Spermatogenesis of Chinese Mitten Crab Eriocheir sinensis

    BACKGROUND: The Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis belongs to the Class Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura. The spermatozoon of this species is of aflagellated type, it has a spherical acrosome surrounded by the cup-shaped nucleus, which are unique to brachyurans. For the past several decades, studies on the spermatogenesis of the mitten crab mainly focus on the morphology. Compared with the extensive study of molecular mechanism of spermatogenesis in mammals, relatively less information is available in crustacean species. Myosin Va, a member of Class V myosin, has been implicated in acrosome biogenesis and vesicle transport during spermatogenesis in mammals. In the present study we demonstrate the expression and cellular localization of myosin Va during spermatogenesis in E. sinensis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Western blot demonstrated that myosin Va is expressed during spermatogenesis. Immunocytochemical and ultrastructural analyses showed that myosin Va mainly localizes in the cytoplasm in spermatocytes. At the early stage of spermiogenesis, myosin Va binds to the endoplasmic reticulum vesicle (EV) and proacrosomal granule (PG). Subsequently, myosin Va localizes within the proacrosomal vesicle (PV) formed by PG and EV fusion and locates in the membrane complex (MC) at the mid spermatid stage. At the late spermatid stage, myosin Va is associated with the shaping nucleus and mitochondria. In mature spermatozoon, myosin Va predominates in acrosomal tubule (AT) and nucleus. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our study demonstrates that myosin Va may be involved in acrosome biogenesis and nuclear morphogenesis during spermatogenesis in E. sinensis. Considering the distribution and molecular characteristics of myosin Va, we also propose a hypothesis of AT formation in this species. It is the first time to uncover the role of myosin Va in crustacean spermatogenesis
