    Cytotoxic and antibacterial activity of the mixture of olive oil and lime cream in vitro conditions

    The mixture of olive oil and lime cream has been traditionally used to treat external burns in the region of Hatay/Antakya and middle Anatolia. Olive oil and lime cream have been employed by many physicians to treat many ailments in the past. A limited number of studies have shown the antibacterial effect of olive oil and that it does not have any toxic effect on the skin. But we did not find any reported studies on the mixture of olive oil and lime cream. The aim of this paper is to investigate the cytotoxic and antibacterial activity of olive oil and lime cream individually or/and in combination in vitro conditions, by using disk-diffusion method and in cell culture. The main purpose in using this mixture is usually to clear burns without a trace. Agar overlay, MTT (Cytotoxicity assay) and antibacterial susceptibility tests were used to investigate the cytotoxic and antibacterial activity of olive oil and lime cream. We found that lime cream has an antibacterial activity but also cytotoxic on the fibroblasts. On the other hand olive oil has limited or no antibacterial effect and it has little or no cytotoxic on the fibroblasts. When we combined lime cream and olive oil, olive oil reduced its cytotoxic impact. These results suggest that mixture of olive oil and lime cream is not cytotoxic and has antimicrobial activity.Keywords: Olive oil, lime cream, burn, in vitro, cytotoxic activity, antibacterial activit

    RFLP of analyses of an intergenic spacer region of chloroplast DNA in some wild wheat species

    Several studies are being made to get high productive wheats throughout the world because they provide the most of human energy and protein needs. In this study, 11 wheat species of Triticum andAegilops were investigated. One of the intergenic regions of cpDNA was studied. This region was amplified with PCR and digested with 6 restriction endonucleases (Hpa II, Alu I, Hinc II, Ava III, Nde I andHae III). According to results, amplified products can be divided into the three groups which are Group 1 (~2000 bp), Group 2 (~1000 bp) and Group 3 (~700 bp). Group 1 contains Ae. neglecta Req. ex Bertol.(syn.:Ae. triaristata), Ae. triuncialis, Ae. mutica Boiss. and T. monococcum L. var. monococcum. Group 2 contains T. aestivum L., Ae. biuncialis Vis., T. turgidum L. (Syn.: T. turgidum var. turgidum) and T.carthlicum Nevski. Group 3 contains Ae. tauschii Cosson. subsp. tauschii and Ae. cylindrica Host.     Effect of ionizing (gamma) and non-ionizing (UV) radiation on the development of Trichogramma euproctidis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

    The potential of using gamma and ultraviolet radiation as an alternative treatment to increase the efficiency of Trichogramma euproctidis (Girault 1911) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was investigated in the laboratory. The developmental and adult stages of T. euproctidis were exposed to gamma radiation of different doses (0-30 Gy) and ultraviolet radiation of 254 nm wavelengths (UV-C) for different durations (0-10 min) to assess their effect on each of the instars and their potential in breaking the developmental cycle of the egg parasitoid. The LD50 values for eggs, prepupae, pupae and adults were 8.1, 10.0, 22.7 and 9.5 Gy for gamma radiation and 9.5, 0.12, 2.0 and 11.9 min for UV radiation, respectively. The pupa and adult stages were more radioresistant to both gamma and UV radiation. The most interesting and unexpected result obtained for the prepupal stage was that UV radiation has a greater effect on prepupal stages than gamma radiation

    Determination of Physiological, Biochemical and Molecular Effects of Zinc Stress on the Growth of Sunflower Seedlings (Helianthus annuus L.)

    Heavy metal contamination is an important environmental problem all over the world. High concentrations of heavy metals cause permanent damage stocells and tissues. In this study, the toxic effects of zincheavy metal in sunflower plant in population and molecular parameters were investigated. The effects of zincheavymetalon sunflower seedlings were determined using the changes in population parameters; rootlength, dry weight, and total solubleprotein content. Total protein content of sunflower plants was determined in a relationship in the opposite direction increasing the amount of metal concentrations. Genotoxic effects of heavymetal of zinc on sunflower plants were revealed by using changes in genomic template stability (GTS). According to analyses, serious changes in genomic template stability were detected and these results were compared with the growth, dry weight and total soluble protein content of the seedlings grown at various zinc concentrations. Also, it was seen that the genomic template stability significantly affected the primary root length, root dry weight and root total soluble protein content. Positive correlations were observed between physiological, biochemical and molecular parameters in sunflower seedlings under zinc stress.In conclusion, a comparison between physiological, biochemical and molecular parameters shows that zinc is a genotoxic agent for sunflower plants
