Cross-waves induced by the vertical oscillation of a fully immersed vertical plate
Capillary waves excited by the vertical oscillations of a thin elongated
plate below an air-water interface are analyzed using time-resolved
measurements of the surface topography. A parametric instability is observed
above a well defined acceleration threshold, resulting in a so-called
cross-wave, a staggered wave pattern localized near the wavemaker and
oscillating at half the forcing frequency. This cross-wave, which is stationary
along the wavemaker but propagative away from it, is described as the
superposition of two almost anti-parallel propagating parametric waves making a
small angle of the order of with the wavemaker edge. This
contrasts with the classical Faraday parametric waves, which are exactly
stationnary because of the homogeneity of the forcing. Our observations suggest
that the selection of the cross-wave angle results from a resonant mechanism
between the two parametric waves and a characteristic length of the surface
deformation above the wavemaker.Comment: to appear in Physics of Fluid
Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in Incarcerated Populations
Alarming disparities in population health and wellness in the United States have led to multi-disciplinary research efforts to create health equity. Identifying disparities, elucidating the etiological bases of disparities, and implementing solutions to eliminate disparities are part of the U.S. national health agenda. Racial and ethnic disparities have been identified throughout the cancer control continuum, in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and a multitude of other conditions. The causes of disparities are complex, condition specific, and conjectured to result from combinations of biological and socio-behavioral factors. Racial and ethnic health disparities within the vast incarcerated communities have been excluded from most studies, yet are of significant ethical and fiscal concern to inmates, governing bodies, and non-incarcerated communities into which inmates return. Importantly, research on racial and ethnic disparities in this unique population may shed light on the relative etiologies of health disparities and solutions for creating health equity throughout the general population in the United States
The effect of the thermal conductivity of the substrate on droplet evaporation
The evaporation of liquid droplets is of fundamental importance to industry, with a vast number of applications including ink-jet printing, spray cooling and DNA mapping, and has been the subject of considerable theoretical and experimental research in recent years. Significant recent papers include those by Deegan [1], Deegan et al. [2], Hu and Larson [3], Poulard et al. [4], Sultan et al. [5], and Shahidzadeh-Bonn et al. [6]
Doxycycline increases neurogenesis and reduces microglia in the adult hippocampus.
Adult hippocampal neurogenesis results in the continuous formation of new neurons and is a process of brain plasticity involved in learning and memory. Although inducible-reversible transgenic mouse models are increasingly being used to investigate adult neurogenesis, transgene control requires the administration of an activator, doxycycline (Dox), with unknown effects on adult neurogenesis. Here, we tested the effect of Dox administration on adult neurogenesis in vivo. We found that 4 weeks of Dox treatment at doses commonly used for gene expression control, resulted in increased neurogenesis. Furthermore, the dendrites of new neurons displayed increased spine density. Concomitantly, Iba1-expressing microglia was reduced by Dox treatment. These results indicate that Dox treatment may interfere with parameters of relevance for the use of inducible transgenic mice in studies of adult neurogenesis or brain inflammation
Color image compression based on spatial and magnitude signal decomposition
In this paper, a simple color image compression system has been proposed using image signal decomposition. Where, the RGB image color band is converted to the less correlated YUV color model and the pixel value (magnitude) in each band is decomposed into 2-values; most and least significant. According to the importance of the most significant value (MSV) that influenced by any simply modification happened, an adaptive lossless image compression system is proposed using bit plane (BP) slicing, delta pulse code modulation (Delta PCM), adaptive quadtree (QT) partitioning followed by an adaptive shift encoder. On the other hand, a lossy compression system is introduced to handle the least significant value (LSV), it is based on an adaptive, error bounded coding system, and it uses the DCT compression scheme. The performance of the developed compression system was analyzed and compared with those attained from the universal standard JPEG, and the results of applying the proposed system indicated its performance is comparable or better than that of the JPEG standards
Adaptive Transgenerational Plasticity in Plants: Case Studies, Mechanisms, and Implications for Natural Populations
Plants respond to environmental conditions not only by plastic changes to their own development and physiology, but also by altering the phenotypes expressed by their offspring. This transgenerational plasticity was initially considered to entail only negative effects of stressful parental environments, such as production of smaller seeds by resource- or temperature-stressed parent plants, and was therefore viewed as environmental noise. Recent evolutionary ecology studies have shown that in some cases, these inherited environmental effects can include specific growth adjustments that are functionally adaptive to the parental conditions that induced them, which can range from contrasting states of controlled laboratory environments to the complex habitat variation encountered by natural plant populations. Preliminary findings suggest that adaptive transgenerational effects can be transmitted by means of diverse mechanisms including changes to seed provisioning and biochemistry, and epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation that can persist across multiple generations. These non-genetically inherited adaptations can influence the ecological breadth and evolutionary dynamics of plant taxa and promote the spread of invasive plants. Interdisciplinary studies that join mechanistic and evolutionary ecology approaches will be an important source of future insights
Superfluid 4He dynamics beyond quasiparticle excitations
The dynamics of superfluid 4He at and above the Landau quasiparticle regime
is investigated by high precision inelastic neutron scattering measurements of
the dynamic structure factor. A highly structured response is observed above
the familiar phonon-maxon-roton spectrum, characterized by sharp thresholds for
phonon-phonon, maxon-roton and roton-roton coupling processes. The experimental
dynamic structure factor is compared to the calculation of the same physical
quantity by a Dynamic Many-body theory including three-phonon processes
self-consistently. The theory is found to provide a quantitative description of
the dynamics of the correlated bosons for energies up to about three times that
of the Landau quasiparticles.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
