A global climatology of wind–wave interaction
Generally, ocean waves are thought to act as a drag on the surface
wind so that momentum is transferred downwards, from the atmosphere
into the waves. Recent observations have suggested that when long
wavelength waves, characteristic of remotely generated swell,
propagate faster than the surface wind momentum can also be
transferred upwards. This upward momentum transfer acts to accelerate
the near-surface wind, resulting in a low-level wave-driven wind
jet. Previous studies have suggested that the sign reversal of the
momentum flux is well predicted by the inverse wave age, the ratio of
the surface wind speed to the speed of the waves at the peak of the
spectrum. ECMWF ERA-40 data has been used here to calculate the global
distribution of the inverse wave age to determine whether there are
regions of the ocean that are usually in the wind-driven wave regime
and others that are generally in the wave-driven wind regime. The
wind-driven wave regime is found to occur most often in the
mid-latitude storm tracks where wind speeds are generally high. The
wave-driven wind regime is found to be prevalent in the tropics where
wind speeds are generally light and swell can propagate from storms at
higher latitudes. The inverse wave age is also a useful indicator of
the degree of coupling between the local wind and wave fields. The
climatologies presented emphasise the non-equilibrium that exists
between the local wind and wave fields and highlight the importance of
swell in the global oceans
The volumetric rate of calcium-rich transients in the local universe
We present a measurement of the volumetric rate of `calcium-rich' optical
transients in the local universe, using a sample of three events from the
Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). This measurement builds on a detailed study of
the PTF transient detection efficiencies, and uses a Monte Carlo simulation of
the PTF survey. We measure the volumetric rate of calcium-rich transients to be
higher than previous estimates: events
yr Mpc. This is equivalent to 33-94% of the local volumetric type
Ia supernova rate. This calcium-rich transient rate is sufficient to reproduce
the observed calcium abundances in galaxy clusters, assuming an asymptotic
calcium yield per calcium-rich event of ~0.05. We also
study the PTF detection efficiency of these transients as a function of
position within their candidate host galaxies. We confirm as a real physical
effect previous results that suggest calcium-rich transients prefer large

Laser-velocimeter flow-field measurements of an advanced turboprop
Non-intrusive measurements of velocity about a spinner-propeller-nacelle configuration at a Mach number of 0.8 were performed. A laser velocimeter, specifically developed for these measurements in the NASA Lewis 8-foot by 6-foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel, was used to measure the flow-field of the advanced swept SR-3 turboprop. The laser velocimeter uses an argon ion laser and a 2-color optics system to allow simultaneous measurements of 2-components of velocity. The axisymmetric nature of the propeller-nacelle flow-field permits two separate 2 dimensonal measurements to be combined into 3 dimensional velocity data. Presented are data ahead of and behind the prop blades and also a limited set in between the blades. Aspects of the observed flow-field such as the tip vortex are discussed
Weak Localization Thickness Measurements of Si:P Delta-Layers
We report on our results for the characterization of Si:P delta-layers grown
by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy. Our data shows that the effective
thickness of a delta-layer can be obtained through a weak localization analysis
of electrical transport measurements performed in perpendicular and parallel
magnetic fields. An estimate of the diffusivity of phosphorous in silicon is
obtained by applying this method to several samples annealed at 850 Celsius for
intervals of zero to 15 minutes. With further refinements, this may prove to be
the most precise method of measuring delta-layer widths developed to date,
including that of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry analysis
The enviornmental assessment of a contemporary coal mining system
A contemporary underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky was assessed in order to determine potential off-site and on-site environmental impacts associated with the mining system in the given environmental setting. A 4 section, continuous room and pillor mine plan was developed for an appropriate site in eastern Kentucky. Potential environmental impacts were identified, and mitigation costs determined. The major potential environmental impacts were determined to be: acid water drainage from the mine and refuse site, uneven subsidence of the surface as a result of mining activity, and alteration of ground water aquifers in the subsidence zone. In the specific case examined, the costs of environmental impact mitigation to levels prescribed by regulations would not exceed $1/ton of coal mined, and post mining land values would not be affected

Expanding direction of the period doubling operator
We prove that the period doubling operator has an expanding direction at the
fixed point. We use the induced operator, a ``Perron-Frobenius type operator'',
to study the linearization of the period doubling operator at its fixed point.
We then use a sequence of linear operators with finite ranks to study this
induced operator. The proof is constructive. One can calculate the expanding
direction and the rate of expansion of the period doubling operator at the
fixed point
Are there prehistoric shell middens on Rottwest Island?
In August 1973 a number of different types of shell bed were observed at Rottnest Island. The most massive of these were seen around the lakes at the eastern end of the island and there is no doubt that these are natural marine shell beds. However elsewhere shelly deposits were seen whose origin we could not determine with certainty. A number of midden like lenses of shell were exposed in road sections, particularly along the north side of the island. All of these deposits displayed some of the characteristics of Aboriginal shell middens
Spectral Models for Early Time SN 2011fe Observations
We use observed UV through near IR spectra to examine whether SN 2011fe can
be understood in the framework of Branch-normal SNe Ia and to examine its
individual peculiarities. As a benchmark, we use a delayed-detonation model
with a progenitor metallicity of Z_solar/20. We study the sensitivity of
features to variations in progenitor metallicity, the outer density profile,
and the distribution of radioactive nickel. The effect of metallicity
variations in the progenitor have a relatively small effect on the synthetic
spectra. We also find that the abundance stratification of SN 2011fe resembles
closely that of a delayed detonation model with a transition density that has
been fit to other Branch-normal Type Ia supernovae. At early times, the model
photosphere is formed in material with velocities that are too high, indicating
that the photosphere recedes too slowly or that SN 2011fe has a lower specific
energy in the outer ~0.1 M_sun than does the model. We discuss several
explanations for the discrepancies. Finally, we examine variations in both the
spectral energy distribution and in the colors due to variations in the
progenitor metallicity, which suggests that colors are only weak indicators for
the progenitor metallicity, in the particular explosion model that we have
studied. We do find that the flux in the U band is significantly higher at
maximum light in the solar metallicity model than in the lower metallicity
model and the lower metallicity model much better matches the observed
