Impact of Supplemental Oxygen on Obstructive Sleep Apnea of Infants
Abstract: Treatment options may be limited for infants with obstructive sleep apnea when there is no surgically correctable upper airway lesion. We therefore evaluated, retrospectively, the efficacy of low-flow oxygen as a therapeutic option for infant obstructive sleep apnea. We reviewed the medical charts of 23 infants who had undergone a therapeutic trial of low-flow oxygen during polysomnography. Split-night polysomnography was used in 21/23 subjects while 2/23 had undergone two separate, full-night polysomnography sleep architecture and respiratory findings on the baseline polysomnogram segment that was obtained in room air were compared with the segment on low-flow oxygen (0.25–1 L/min). Wilcoxon signed rank or McNemar’s test were used as indicated for comparing apnea hypopnea index and measures of sleep architecture at baseline and with oxygen therapy. The mean (plus/minus SD) age of subjects was 4.8 (plus/minus 2.7) months, with 52% being males. The median apnea hypopnea index fell from a baseline of 18 (range 7–43) to 3 (range 1–19; p = 0.001) on oxygen. The baseline median obstructive/mixed apnea index decreased from 2 (range 1–16) to 1 during oxygen therapy (range 0–1; p = 0.003). Additionally, a significant decrease in central apnea index (median interquartile range (IQR) 1 (0–2) vs. 0 (0–1), p = 0.002) was noted. Sleep efficiency remained unaffected, while O2 saturation (SaO2) average and SaO2 nadir improved on oxygen. We were able to confirm the utility of low-flow oxygen in reducing central, obstructive, and mixed apneas and improving average oxygen saturation in infants with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

Basalt-CO2-brine wettability at storage conditions in basaltic formations
© 2020 Elsevier Ltd CO2 geo-storage in basaltic formations has recently been demonstrated as a viable solution to rapidly sequester and mineralize CO2. In case CO2 is injected into such basalt reservoirs in supercritical form, a two-phase system (reservoir brine and supercritical CO2) is created, and it is of key importance to specify the associated CO2-basalt wettability so that fluid distributions and CO2 flow through the reservoir can be predicted. However, there is a serious lack of data for basalt CO2-wettability. We therefore measured water contact angles on basalt substrates in CO2 atmosphere. The results indicate that at shallow depth (below 500 m) basalt is strongly water-wet. With increasing depth the basalt becomes less hydrophilic, and turns intermediate-wet at a depth of 900 m. We conclude that basalt is more CO2-wet than chemically clean minerals (quartz, calcite), especially at depths below 900 m. However, the basalt had a CO2-wettability similar to some caprock samples and a gas-reservoir sandstone. The data presented in this paper will thus aid in the prediction and optimization of CO2 geo-storage in basalt formations
The changes of reflex ventilatory response to hypercapnia in obstructive sleep apnea patients
Odruchową odpowiedź oddechową na postępującą hiperkapnię hiperoksyczną badano w 3 grupach osób
z obturacyjnym bezdechem sennym (OBS).
U chorych
z OBS i współistniejącą niewydolnością oddechową stwierdzono niemalże całkowity brak reakcji oddechowej
na hipoksję. Oznacza to, że u tych pacjentów dochodzi do całkowitego załamania się możliwości
obrony przed hiperkapnią, a tym samym do wyeliminowania odruchowych mechanizmów przerywających
bezdech. The reflex ventilatory response to progressive hyperoxic hypercapnia was studied in three groups of obstructive
sleep apnea patients. In patients with normal end-tidal PACO2 no differences were found as
compared with the control group. Patients with inreased end-tidal PACO2 showed an impaired ventilatory
response to hypercapnia, occuring on a background elevation of the arterial carbon dioxid: 1. the right shift
with the normal slope of the regression curve of relationship between end-tidal PACO2 and minute ventilation
and 2. the right shift with decrease of slope of the regression curve of relationship between end-tidal
PACO2 and minute ventilation. Patients, who develop hypercapnic respiratory failure awake, showed an
impaired hypercapnic defence reaction
Influence of Menstrual Cycle on Maximal Aerobic Power of Young Female Adults
The purpose of this study was to determine the exercise response to various stages of the menstrual cycle in young female African adults. Fifteen volunteer, sedentary young female adults with a regular 28-day menstrual cycle and no history of premenstrual syndrome or abnormality participated in this study. A repeated measure and three counter balanced cross over order design was used in data collection. The subjects engaged in a 20-metre shuttle run test (20-MST) at the 3rd (early follicular phase), 14th (ovulation) and 26th (late luteal phase) days of their menstrual 2 cycle. Maximal aerobic endurance performance indexes (VO2 max, run time & number of exercise laps) were recorded. One way ANOVA with repeated measures was used in data analysis. 2 The result revealed no significant differences in the short maximum endurance performance (VO2 max) [F=.554, p=0.581], run laps [F=.483, p=0.622], and run time [F=.554, p=0.581]) recorded in the various phases of the menstrual cycle at
