Relearning procedure to adapt pollutant prediction neural model: Choice of relearning algorithm

International audiencePredict the indoor air quality becomes a global public health issue. That's why Airbox lab® company develops a smart connected object able to measure different physical parameters including concentration of pollutants (volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide and fine particles). This smart object must embed prediction capacities in order to avoid the exceedance of an air quality threshold. This task is performed by neural network models. However, when some events occur (change of people's behaviors, change of place of the smart connected object as example), the embedded neural models become less accurate. So a relearning step is needed in order to refit the models. This relearning must be performed by the smart connected object, and therefore, it must use the less computing time as possible. To do that, this paper propose to combine a control chart in order to limit the frequency of relearning, and to compare three learning algorithms (backpropagation, Levenberg-Marquardt, neural network with random weights) in order to choose the more adapted to this situation

Anterior-enriched filopodia create the appearance of asymmetric membrane microdomains in polarizing C. elegans zygotes

International audienceThe association of molecules within membrane microdomains is critical for the intracellular organization of cells. During polarization of the C. elegans zygote, both polarity proteins and actomyosin regulators associate within dynamic membrane-associated foci. Recently, a novel class of asymmetric membrane-associated structures was described that appeared to be enriched in phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP 2), suggesting that PIP 2 domains could constitute signaling hubs to promote cell polarization and actin nucleation. Here, we probe the nature of these domains using a variety of membrane-and actin cortex-associated probes. These data demonstrate that these domains are filopodia, which are stimulated transiently during polarity establishment and accumulate in the zygote anterior. The resulting membrane protrusions create local membrane topology that quantitatively accounts for observed local increases in the fluorescence signal of membrane-associated molecules, suggesting molecules are not selectively enriched in these domains relative to bulk membrane and that the PIP 2 pool as revealed by PH PLCδ1 simply reflects plasma membrane localization. Given the ubiquity of 3D membrane structures in cells, including filopodia, microvilli and membrane folds, similar caveats are likely to apply to analysis of membrane-associated molecules in a broad range of systems

A matrix for assessing mutual impacts of human rights education and religious education

To address the societal challenges of global solidarity and sustainable societies there is clearly a need for human rights education (HRE). The question arises as to which school subject is capable of contributing to HRE in which way – and how different disciplines may ideally collaborate. The situation is particularly challenging for religious education in public schools. Here there is an inherent potential for HRE, but there are specific didactic issues related to civil rights and liberties. This article presents a ‘matrix for human rights awareness’ that is based on a systematic and multi-perspective analysis. The matrix can be used to categorise current HRE approaches. It can also serve the self-assessment of the various reference disciplines for HRE, while promoting and supporting mutual communication and collaboration among them. Furthermore, it may serve as a reference framework to map the field of different models of public religious education, establishing their specific potentials for HRE

Does management have a gender?: Antecedents of missing women in management positions

Master of Science in Management (UPF Barcelona School of Management) Curs 2019-2020Mentor: Mircea EpureIn the last decades women, especially in the developed countries, had more opportunities of accessing a higher education and achieving careers traditionally pursued by men. Still, the percentage of women in the leading management positions is low. Are there specific antecedents, which explain the existing gap between men and women who made it to the very top of their careers? Using data from the World Value Survey, this thesis shows that the factors influencing this gap are diverse but lead to the following key conclusions. In older generations the gender gap in management positions is stronger and more present, and an increasing age is a contra productive fact for women that pursuit a management position. Belonging to a middle- or high-income class and having high education is positively related to female employment in general, as well as in management positions. Religion leads all in all to a lower participation in the labor market, and inhibits the career path of females more, than the one of males. The equality and liberalism that a democracy reinforces and promotes, reduces the difference between women and men in the labor market, fostering female participation. This inclination towards equality in the labor market and in high hierarchical positions is also supported by values such as trust and respect. Typical management attributes such as competition and risk preferences are important for the acquisition of a supervisor position, but do not increase the probability of a competitive or more risk-taking woman in a supervisor position.
