Ion pairing in model electrolytes: A study via three particle correlation functions
A novel integral equations approach is applied for studying ion pairing in
the restricted primitive model (RPM) electrolyte, i. e., the three point
extension (TPE) to the Ornstein-Zernike integral equations. In the TPE
approach, the three-particle correlation functions are obtained. The TPE results are compared to molecular
dynamics (MD) simulations and other theories. Good agreement between TPE and MD
is observed for a wide range of parameters, particularly where standard
integral equations theories fail, i. e., low salt concentration and high ionic
valence. Our results support the formation of ion pairs and aligned ion

A Calculation of Baryon Diffusion Constant in Hot and Dense Hadronic Matter Based on an Event Generator URASiMA
We evaluate thermodynamical quantities and transport coefficients of a dense
and hot hadronic matter based on an event generator URASiMA (Ultra-Relativistic
AA collision Simulator based on Multiple Scattering Algorithm). The statistical
ensembles in equilibrium with fixed temperature and chemical potential are
generated by imposing periodic boundary condition to the simulation of URASiMA,
where energy density and baryon number density is conserved. Achievement of the
thermal equilibrium and the chemical equilibrium are confirmed by the common
value of slope parameter in the energy distributions and the saturation of the
numbers of contained particles, respectively. By using the generated ensembles,
we investigate the temperature dependence and the chemical potential dependence
of the baryon diffusion constant of a dense and hot hadronic matter.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX2
Interplay between carrier and impurity concentrations in annealed GaMnAs intrinsic anomalous Hall Effect
Investigating the scaling behavior of annealed GaMnAs anomalous
Hall coefficients, we note a universal crossover regime where the scaling
behavior changes from quadratic to linear, attributed to the anomalous Hall
Effect intrinsic and extrinsic origins, respectively. Furthermore, measured
anomalous Hall conductivities when properly scaled by carrier concentration
remain constant, equal to theoretically predicated values, spanning nearly a
decade in conductivity as well as over 100 K in T. Both the qualitative
and quantitative agreement confirms the validity of new equations of motion
including the Berry phase contributions as well as tunablility of the intrinsic
anomalous Hall Effect.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Easy on that trigger dad: a study of long term family photo retrieval
We examine the effects of new technologies for digital photography on people's longer term storage and access to collections of personal photos. We report an empirical study of parents' ability to retrieve photos related to salient family events from more than a year ago. Performance was relatively poor with people failing to find almost 40% of pictures. We analyze participants' organizational and access strategies to identify reasons for this poor performance. Possible reasons for retrieval failure include: storing too many pictures, rudimentary organization, use of multiple storage systems, failure to maintain collections and participants' false beliefs about their ability to access photos. We conclude by exploring the technical and theoretical implications of these findings
Similarity of slow stripe fluctations between Sr-doped cuprates and oxygen-doped nickelates
Stripe fluctuations in La2NiO4.17 have been studied by 139La NMR using the
field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. In the
formation process of the stripes the NMR line intensity is maximal below 230K,
starts to diminish around 140K, disappears around 50K and recovers at 4K. These
results are shown to be consistent with, but completely complementary to
neutron measurements, and to be generic for oxygen doped nickelates and
underdoped cuprates.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figure
Shear stress fluctuations in the granular liquid and solid phases
We report on experimentally observed shear stress fluctuations in both
granular solid and fluid states, showing that they are non-Gaussian at low
shear rates, reflecting the predominance of correlated structures (force
chains) in the solidlike phase, which also exhibit finite rigidity to shear.
Peaks in the rigidity and the stress distribution's skewness indicate that a
change to the force-bearing mechanism occurs at the transition to fluid
behaviour, which, it is shown, can be predicted from the behaviour of the
stress at lower shear rates. In the fluid state stress is Gaussian distributed,
suggesting that the central limit theorem holds. The fibre bundle model with
random load sharing effectively reproduces the stress distribution at the yield
point and also exhibits the exponential stress distribution anticipated from

First time determination of the microscopic structure of a stripe phase: Low temperature NMR in La2NiO4.17
The experimental observations of stripes in superconducting cuprates and
insulating nickelates clearly show the modulation in charge and spin density.
However, these have proven to be rather insensitive to the harmonic structure
and (site or bond) ordering. Using 139La NMR in La2NiO4.17, we show that in the
1/3 hole doped nickelate below the freezing temperature the stripes are
strongly solitonic and site ordered with Ni3+ ions carrying S=1/2 in the domain
walls and Ni2+ ions with S=1 in the domains.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figure
Exploring daily time-use patterns: ATUS-X data extractor and online diary visualization tool
Time-use data can often be perceived as inaccessible by non-specialists due to their unique format. This article introduces the ATUS-X diary visualization tool that aims to address the accessibility issue and expand the user base of time-use data by providing users with opportunity to quickly visualize their own subsamples of the American Time Use Survey Data Extractor (ATUS-X). Complementing the ATUS-X, the online tool provides an easy point-and-click interface, making data exploration readily accessible in a visual form. The tool can benefit a wider academic audience, policy-makers, non-academic researchers, and journalists by removing accessibility barriers to time use diaries

Black Carbon Exposure, Oxidative Stress Genes, and Blood Pressure in a Repeated-measures Study
Background: Particulate matter (PM) air pollution has been associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and elevated blood pressure (BP) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A small number of studies have investigated the relationship between PM and BP and found mixed results. Evidence suggests that traffic-related air pollution contributes significantly to PM-related cardiovascular effects. Objectives: We hypothesized that black carbon (BC), a traffic-related combustion by-product, would be more strongly associated with BP than would fine PM [aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM)], a heterogeneous PM mixture, and that these effects would be larger among participants with genetic variants associated with impaired antioxidative defense. Methods: We performed a repeated-measures analysis in elderly men to analyze associations between PM and BC exposure and BP using mixed-effects models with random intercepts, adjusting for potential confounders. We also examined statistical interaction between BC and genetic variants related to oxidative stress defense: GSTM1, GSTP1, GSTT1, NQO1, catalase, and HMOX-1. Results: A 1-SD increase in BC concentration was associated with a 1.5-mmHg increase in systolic BP [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.1–2.8] and a 0.9-mmHg increase in diastolic BP (95% CI, 0.2–1.6). We observed no evidence of statistical interaction between BC and any of the genetic variants examined and found no association between PM and BP. Conclusions: We observed positive associations between BP and BC, but not between BP and PM, and found no evidence of effect modification of the association between BC and BP by gene variants related to antioxidative defense
