    In the title compound, [CuCl2(C26H18N4)]n, the Cu(II) ion is four-coordinated by two N atoms from two 4,4′-bis­(benzo­imidazol-1-yl)biphenyl ligands and two chloride anions, in a slightly distorted tetra­hedral environment. The biphenyl ligand acts as a linear bidentate ligand, connecting the metal atoms into an infinite chain parallel to [101]. In the biphenyl ligand, the two benzene rings make a dihedral angle of 33.19 (7)°

    Complexity measures and uncertainty relations of the high-dimensional harmonic and hydrogenic systems

    In this work we find that not only the Heisenberg-like uncertainty products and the R\'enyi-entropy-based uncertainty sum have the same first-order values for all the quantum states of the DD-dimensional hydrogenic and oscillator-like systems, respectively, in the pseudoclassical (DD \to \infty) limit but a similar phenomenon also happens for both the Fisher-information-based uncertainty product and the Shannon-entropy-based uncertainty sum, as well as for the Cr\'amer-Rao and Fisher-Shannon complexities. Moreover, we show that the LMC (L\'opez-Ruiz-Mancini-Calvet) and LMC-R\'enyi complexity measures capture the hydrogenic-harmonic difference in the high dimensional limit already at first order

    Intramolecular π Stacking in Cationic Iridium(III) Complexes with Phenyl-Functionalized Cyclometalated Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, Photophysical Properties, and Theoretical Studies

    The syntheses of two new heteroleptic cationic iridium complexes containing 2,6-diphenylpyridine (Hdppy) and 2,4,6-triphenylpyridine (Htppy) as the cyclometalated ligands, namely, [Ir(dppy)2phen]PF6 (1, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) and [Ir(tppy)2phen]PF6 (2), are described. The X-ray crystal structure of 2 reveals a distorted octahedral geometry around the Ir center and close intramolecular face-to-face π–π stacking interactions between the pendant phenyl rings at the 2-position of the cyclometalated ligands and the NN ancillary ligand. This represents a new π–π stacking mode in charged Ir complexes. Complexes 1 and 2 are green photoemitters: their photophysical and electrochemical properties are interpreted with the assistance of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These calculations also establish that the observed intramolecular interactions cannot effectively prevent the lengthening of the Ir–N bonds of the complexes in their metal-centered (3MC) states. Complexes 1 and 2 do not emit light in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) under conditions in which the model compound [Ir(ppy)2phen]PF6 (3) emits strongly. This is explained by degradation reactions of the 3MC state of 1 and 2 under the applied bias during LEC operation facilitated by the enhanced distortions in the geometry of the complexes. These observations have important implications for the future design of complexes for LEC applications

    Investigation and identification of protein γ-glutamyl carboxylation sites

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Carboxylation is a modification of glutamate (Glu) residues which occurs post-translation that is catalyzed by γ-glutamyl carboxylase in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. Vitamin K is a critical co-factor in the post-translational conversion of Glu residues to γ-carboxyglutamate (Gla) residues. It has been shown that the process of carboxylation is involved in the blood clotting cascade, bone growth, and extraosseous calcification. However, studies in this field have been limited by the difficulty of experimentally studying substrate site specificity in γ-glutamyl carboxylation. <it>In silico</it> investigations have the potential for characterizing carboxylated sites before experiments are carried out.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Because of the importance of γ-glutamyl carboxylation in biological mechanisms, this study investigates the substrate site specificity in carboxylation sites. It considers not only the composition of amino acids that surround carboxylation sites, but also the structural characteristics of these sites, including secondary structure and solvent-accessible surface area (ASA). The explored features are used to establish a predictive model for differentiating between carboxylation sites and non-carboxylation sites. A support vector machine (SVM) is employed to establish a predictive model with various features. A five-fold cross-validation evaluation reveals that the SVM model, trained with the combined features of positional weighted matrix (PWM), amino acid composition (AAC), and ASA, yields the highest accuracy (0.892). Furthermore, an independent testing set is constructed to evaluate whether the predictive model is over-fitted to the training set.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Independent testing data that did not undergo the cross-validation process shows that the proposed model can differentiate between carboxylation sites and non-carboxylation sites. This investigation is the first to study carboxylation sites and to develop a system for identifying them. The proposed method is a practical means of preliminary analysis and greatly diminishes the total number of potential carboxylation sites requiring further experimental confirmation.</p

    Raw Garlic Consumption and Risk of Liver Cancer: A Population-Based Case-Control Study in Eastern China.

    Although the major risk factors for liver cancer have been established, preventive factors for liver cancer have not been fully explored. We evaluated the association between raw garlic consumption and liver cancer in a large population-based case-control study in Eastern China. The study was conducted in Jiangsu, China, from 2003 to 2010. A total of 2011 incident liver cancer cases and 7933 randomly selected population-controls were interviewed. Epidemiological data including raw garlic intake and other exposures were collected, and serum markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection were assayed. Overall, eating raw garlic twice or more per week was inversely associated with liver cancer, with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of 0.77 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.62-0.96) compared to those ingesting no raw garlic or less than twice per week. In stratified analyses, high intake of raw garlic was inversely associated with liver cancer among Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negative individuals, frequent alcohol drinkers, those having history of eating mold-contaminated food or drinking raw water, and those without family history of liver cancer. Marginal interactions on an additive scale were observed between low raw garlic intake and HBsAg positivity (attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) = 0.31, 95% CI: -0.01-0.62) and heavy alcohol drinking (AP = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.00-0.57). Raw garlic consumption is inversely associated with liver cancer. Such an association shed some light on the potential etiologic role of garlic intake on liver cancer, which in turn might provide a possible dietary intervention to reduce liver cancer in Chinese population

    Null Genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 Contribute to Risk of Cervical Neoplasia: An Evidence-Based Meta-Analysis

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are multifunctional enzymes that play a key role in the detoxification of varieties of both endogenous products of oxidative stress and exogenous carcinogens. METHODS: In this meta-analysis, twenty-five studies were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science and CBM databases: 23 evaluated GSTM1 and 19 evaluated GSTT1. Crude odds ratios with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were used to estimate the association between GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms and risk of cervical neoplasia. Subgroup analyses were conducted by pathological history, ethnicity, source of DNA for genotyping, quality score, and matching variable. RESULTS: The null genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms were associated with a significantly increased risk of cervical neoplasia (for GSTM1: OR = 1.40; 95%CI, 1.19-1.65; for GSTT1: OR = 1.30; 95%CI, 1.05-1.62, respectively). Subgroup analyses showed that the null genotype of GSTM1 increased the risk of cervical neoplasia in Asians, studies with DNA isolation from white blood cells and tissue samples, both high and low quality studies, and matched studies. In GSTM1-GSTT1 interaction analysis, individuals with dual null genotype were associated with a significantly increased risk of cervical neoplasia (OR = 1.72; 95%CI, 1.18-2.51). CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms, particularly GSTM1-GSTT1 interaction, may play critical roles in the development of cervical neoplasia. A conservative manner should be adopted to interpret these results because of obvious heterogeneity between-study, unadjusted data, and relatively small sample size in this meta-analysis. Well designed studies with larger sample size are of great value to confirm these results

    Density dependence of the "symmetry energy" in the lattice gas model

    Isoscaling behavior of the statistical emission fragments from the equilibrated sources with ZZ = 30 and NN = 30, 33, 36 and 39, resepectively, is investigated in the framework of isospin dependent lattice gas model. The dependences of isoscaling parameters α\alpha on source isospin asymmetry, temperature and freeze-out density are studied and the "symmetry energy" is deduced from isoscaling parameters. Results show that "symmetry energy" CsymC_{sym} is insensitive to the change of temperature but follows the power-law dependence on the freeze-out density ρ\rho. The later gives CsymC_{sym} = 30(ρ/ρ0)0.62(\rho/\rho_0)^{0.62} if the suitable asymmetric nucleon-nucleon potential is taken. The effect of strength of asymmetry of nucleon-nucleon interaction potential on the density dependence of the "symmetry energy" is dicussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 page

    Multimodality imaging in diagnosing lipomatous atrial septal hypertrophy with atrial septal defect: a case report

    BackgroundLipomatous atrial septal hypertrophy (LASH) with atrial septal defect (ASD) is a rare congenital anomaly. Although LASH is a histologically benign cardiac lesion characterized by excessive fat deposition in the interatrial septum that spares the fossa ovale, it has been associated with supraventricular arrhythmias or sick sinus syndrome. Application of multimodal imaging is crucial for accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment of LASH with ASD, and follow-up.Case summaryA 68-year-old female patient presented with recurrent chest tightness and palpitation. Multimodal imaging revealed the characterizations of LASH and ASD. Two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography showed a “dumbbell”-shaped involvement of the cephalad and caudal regions with sparing of a single secundum ASD. The septum with a brightness feature is an uncommon condition characterized by the deposition of unencapsulated fat cells in the atrial septum. Real-time four-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography reflected the lipomatous hypertrophy of the atrial septum and an oval-shaped ASD. Cardiac computer tomography angiography later confirmed this finding. The patient achieved a good clinical response with an ASD percutaneous occlusion guided by intracardiac echocardiography (ICE).ConclusionThis case demonstrates a LASH combined with ASD. Multimodality imaging can provide an accurate diagnosis and may guide the procedure for precise occlusion
