    The Feasibility of Using Expert Systems in the Management of Human Resources

    The purpose of this paper is to introduce a decision aid that is being used increasingly in the business world, the expert system, and to begin to examine its potential for human resource management. First, the expert system technology is reviewed, with a special emphasis on the players, those involved in developing and using the system, and the parts, the three main components of a system. This is followed by an analysis of the costs and benefits and the advantages and disadvantages that have been ascribed to expert systems. We conclude this initial research endeavor by presenting some preliminary findings which suggest that employees are willing to cooperate with expert systems, even those that require personal information, and that they see some benefits to using expert systems as decision aids

    The Effects of a Flexible Benefits Expert System on Employee Decisions and Satisfaction

    Anecdotal reports and recent reviews assert that expert systems are potentially useful decision aids in human resource management. This study examines the effects of an expert system designed to aid employees when they make their choices in a flexible bellcfit program. A four group quasi-field experimental design is used to examine the relative effects of the expert system compared to a conventional spreadsheet decision aid. Eighty employees at an NCR-AT&T facility were randomly selected and assigned to the groups. Employees using the expert system expressed greater benefits satisfaction compared to those using the spreadsheet aid. The spreadsheet did not have any effect on employees\u27 decisions. When the benefit choices recommended by the expert system differed from the employees\u27 current choices, employees are more likely to change their choices. Consequently, the expert system is likely to affect employees\u27 decisions. Implications are discussed and future research needs are suggested

    Justice as a Dynamic Construct: Effects of Individual Trajectories on Distal Work Outcomes

    Despite an amassing organizational justice literature, few studies have directly addressed the temporal patterning of justice judgments and the effects that changes in these perceptions have on important work outcomes. Drawing from Gestalt characteristics theory (Ariely & Cannon, 2000, 2003), we examine the concept of justice trajectories (i.e., levels and trends of individual fairness perceptions over time) and offer empirical evidence to highlight the value of considering fairness within a dynamic context. Participants included 523 working adults who completed surveys about their work experiences on 4 occasions over the course of 1 year. Results indicate that justice trends explained additional variance in distal work outcomes (job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intentions) after controlling for end-state levels of justice, demonstrating the cumulative effects of justice over time. Findings also reveal that change in procedural justice perceptions affected distal work outcomes more strongly than any other justice dimension. Implications for theory and future investigations of justice as a dynamic construct are discussed

    Asymmetry of Nonlinear Transport and Electron Interactions in Quantum Dots

    The symmetry properties of transport beyond the linear regime in chaotic quantum dots are investigated experimentally. A component of differential conductance that is antisymmetric in both applied source-drain bias V and magnetic field B, absent in linear transport, is found to exhibit mesoscopic fluctuations around a zero average.     The LeRC rail accelerators: Test designs and diagnostic techniques

    The feasibility of using rail accelerators for various in-space and to-space propulsion applications was investigated. A 1 meter, 24 sq mm bore accelerator was designed with the goal of demonstrating projectile velocities of 15 km/sec using a peak current of 200 kA. A second rail accelerator, 1 meter long with a 156.25 sq mm bore, was designed with clear polycarbonate sidewalls to permit visual observation of the plasma arc. A study of available diagnostic techniques and their application to the rail accelerator is presented. Specific topics of discussion include the use of interferometry and spectroscopy to examine the plasma armature as well as the use of optical sensors to measure rail displacement during acceleration. Standard diagnostics such as current and voltage measurements are also discussed

    Probing Pauli Blocking Factors in Quantum Pumps with Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry

    A recently demonstrated quantum electron pump is discussed within the framework of photon-assisted tunneling. Due to lack of time-reversal symmetry, different results are obtained for the pump current depending on whether or not final-state Pauli blocking factors are used when describing the tunneling process. Whilst in both cases the current depends quadratically on the driving amplitude for moderate pumping, a marked difference is predicted for the temperature dependence. With blocking factors the pump current decreases roughly linearly with temperature until k_B T ~ \hbar\omega is reached, whereas without them it is unaffected by temperature, indicating that the entire Fermi sea participates in the electronic transport.Comment: 4 pages in RevTex4 (beta4), 6 figures; status: to appear in PR

    Deceleration of one-dimensional mixing by discontinuous mappings

    We present a computational study of a simple one-dimensional map with dynamics composed of stretching, permutations of equal sized cells, and diffusion. We observe that the combination of the aforementioned dynamics results in eigenmodes with long-time exponential decay rates. The decay rate of the eigenmodes is shown to be dependent on the choice of permutation and changes non-monotonically with the diffusion coefficient for many of the permutations. The global mixing rate of the map M in the limit of vanishing diffusivity approximates well the decay rates of the eigenmodes for small diffusivity, however this global mixing rate does not bound the rates for all values of the diffusion coefficient. This counter-intuitively predicts a deceleration in the asymptotic mixing rate with increasing diffusivity rate. The implication of the results on finite time mixing are discussed

    Eigen modes for the problem of anomalous light transmission through subwavelength holes

    We show that the wide-spread concept of optical eigen modes in lossless waveguide structures, which assumes the separation on propagating and evanescent modes, fails in the case of metal-dielectric structures, including photonic crystals. In addition to these modes, there is a sequence of new eigen-states with complex values of the propagation constant and non-vanishing circulating energy flow. The whole eigen-problem ceases to be hermitian because of changing sign of the optical dielectric constant. The new anomalous modes are shown to be of prime importance for the description of the anomalous light transmission through subwavelength holes.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Variability in flowering, fruit set and yield in response to vineyard topography and pruning type in Pinot noir

    Aim: This study investigates the effects of site aspect and pruning management on flowering, fruit set and yield in Pinot noir vines. Methods: Two rows of 19-year-old Pinot noir vines were selected within a commercial vineyard with south, hilltop, and north-facing aspects. Vines were either cane- or spur-pruned, retaining 20 nodes per vine. One monitoring vine was selected at each sub-plot (consisting of four vines) and used to assess days to 50% flowering, fruit set (%) and days to 50% veraison. Total soluble solids samples were taken from each sub-plot and vines were harvested separately for yield. Results/Findings: Days to 50% flowering was affected by the topographical position. Vines from south-facing plots reached 50% flowering three days earlier during 2018-19 and eight days earlier 2020-21 compared to other plots. Cane pruning advanced the flowering date by one day compared with spur pruned vines (2019-20). Fruit set (%) was affected by topography. Vines from the hilltop plots had less than 50% fruit set during 2018-19 and 2020-21 compared to south and north plots (>70% fruit set). The lower fruit set was reflected in reduced yields. Despite the delayed flowering, vines from the hilltop position reached 50% veraison four days earlier than vines from the south and north plots during 2020–21. While there were initial differences in total soluble solids (at 7 to 8 oBrix) at six topographical positions, these variations disappeared by the time the vines were ready for a commercial harvest (>20 oBrix). The type of pruning generally had little effect on fruit set, the date of véraison or soluble solids at harvest, although cane pruning resulted in a 40% increase in yield in 2019–20 when compared to spur pruning. Conclusions: Flowering, fruit set, veraison, and vine yield were affected by topography (site aspect) and pruning type had little to no effect. Vine yield was a reflection of the fruit set (%) with differences between topographical positions. Positions with delayed veraison showed delayed soluble solids accumulation but reached a similar harvest soluble solids and yield

DOI: 10.1080/03004430802352087The number of men in teaching has always been small, particularly in early childhood, but those that do come into teaching usually do so for the same reasons as women, namely enjoyment of working with children, of wanting to teach and wanting to make a difference to children's lives. However, in two separate studies, the authors have shown that on beginning teacher training in 1998, and at the point of leaving the profession in 2005, men and women tend to emphasise different concerns. This article will explore those differences and seek possible explanations for how men's views of teaching might be changing over time.Peer reviewe
