    Vortex lattice in two-dimensional chiral XY ferromagnets and the inverse Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition

    In this Letter we will show that, in the presence of a properly modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, a U(1) vortex-antivortex lattice appears at low temperatures for a wide range of the DM interaction. Even more, in the region dominated by the exchange interaction, a standard BKT transition occurs. In the opposite regime, the one dominated by the DM interaction, a kind of inverse BKT transition (iBKT) takes place. As temperature rises, the vortex-antivortex lattice starts melting by annihilation of pairs of vortex-antivortex, in a sort of “inverse” BKT transition.Fil: Costa, Alejo.     Generalized effective hamiltonian for graphene under non-uniform strain

    We use a symmetry approach to construct a systematic derivative expansion of the low energy effective Hamiltonian modifying the continuum Dirac description of graphene in the presence of non-uniform elastic deformations. We extract all experimentally relevant terms and describe their physical significance. Among them there is a new gap-opening term that describes the Zeeman coupling of the elastic pseudomagnetic field and the pseudospin.     Wormhole solutions to Horava gravity

    We present wormhole solutions to Horava non-relativistic gravity theory in vacuum. We show that, if the parameter λ\lambda is set to one, transversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically de Sitter or anti-de Sitter regions exist. In the case of arbitrary λ\lambda, the asymptotic regions have a more complicated metric with constant curvature. We also show that, when the detailed balance condition is violated softly, tranversable and asymptotically Minkowski, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter wormholes exist.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure.     Anomalous Hall effect in the coplanar antiferromagnetic coloring-triangular lattice

    We study the anomalous Hall effect on the antiferromagnetic coloring-triangular lattice with a coplanar magnetic configuration in the presence of a spin-orbit interaction. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling is included at an effective level as a rotation of the electronic spin as the electrons hop from site to site. Our result reveals that a finite Hall conductivity in the planar 120 structure takes place if a finite spin-orbit coupling is present.     Approximate analytic expression for the Skyrmions crystal

    We find approximate solutions for the two-dimensional non-linear -model with Dzyalioshinkii- Moriya term, representing magnetic Skyrmions. They are built in an analytic form, by pasting different approximate solutions found in different regions of space. We verify that our construction reproduces the phenomenology known from numerical solutions and Monte Carlo simulations, giving rise to a Skyrmion lattice at an intermediate range of magnetic field, flanked by spiral and ferromagnetic phases for low and high magnetic field respectively.Instituto de Física La Plat

    Gauge invariant perturbation theory and non-critical string models of Yang-Mills theories

    We carry out a gauge invariant analysis of certain perturbations of D − 2-branes solutions of low energy string theories. We get generically a system of second order coupled differential equations, and show that only in very particular cases it is possible to reduce it to just one differential equation. Later, we apply it to a multi-parameter, generically singular family of constant dilaton solutions of non-critical string theories in D dimensions, a generalization of that recently found in arXiv:0709.0471 [hep-th]. According to arguments coming from the holographic gauge theory-gravity correspondence, and at least in some region of the parameters space, we obtain glue-ball spectra of Yang-Mills theories in diverse dimensions, putting special emphasis in the scalar metric perturbations not considered previously in the literature in the non critical setup. We compare our numerical results to those studied previously and to lattice results, finding qualitative and in some cases, tuning properly the parameters, quantitative agreement. These results seem to show some kind of universality of the models, as well as an irrelevance of the singular character of the solutions. We also develop the analysis for the T-dual, non trivial dilaton family of solutions, showing perfect agreement between them.Instituto de Física La Plat

    Space dependent Fermi velocity in strained graphene

    We resolve some apparent discrepancies between two different models for curved graphene: the one based on tight binding and elasticity theory, and the covariant approach based on quantum field theory in curved space. We demonstrate that strained or corrugated samples will have a space dependent Fermi velocity in either approach that can affect the interpretation of some experiments.Comment: Revised version as will appear in Phys.     From skyrmions to Z2 vortices in distorted chiral antiferromagnets

    Swirling topological spin configurations, known as magnetic skyrmions, are known to be stabilized by different mechanisms. In particular, in chiral ferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), they appear in a topological crystalline phase, termed the skyrmion crystal phase (SkX), for appropriate values of the external magnetic field. A similar phenomenon is present in the antiferromagnetic case for the Heisenberg triangular antiferromagnet (HTAF) with DMI. Here, the most striking feature is that the emergent topological phase consists of three SkX interpenetrated sublattices. On the other hand, the pure HTAF, being described by an SO(3) order parameter, can host Z2 vortices. This raises the fundamental question of whether both nontrivial structures are related. In this Rapid Communication we unravel a hidden connection between both topological entities by studying the HTAF with anisotropic DMI. To this end, we combine an effective field theory description, the Luttinger-Tisza approximation, and Monte Carlo simulations. We show that even a slight anisotropy in the DMI proves to be the key ingredient to deform the interpenetrated SkX structure and reveal a Z2-vortex crystal.Fil: Osorio, Santiago Antonio.
