Finding Home: Paule Marshall’s “The Chosen Place, the Timeless People”

[full article and abstract in English] The paper deals with the novel “The Chosen Place, the Timeless People” by Paule Marshall, one of the most significant precursors of the modern generation of African American women writers who were instrumental in voicing the concerns and aspirations of millions of black women. It develops some of the themes the writer addressed in her first novel “Brown Girl, Brownstones” and raises topical issues of power and domination, connections between the historical past and present, postcolonial mentality, individual and collective identity, racism, gender inequality, complex relationship between the oppressed and the oppressors, men and women in a male-dominated society, and women’s struggle for self-identification and self-determination. The novel was published in 1969, a critical year in the Civil Rights movement that paved the way for major changes in the social and political life of the United States, and signified the emergence of black feminist writing focusing on the female protagonist of mixed descent who challenges the accepted views and mores and helps to introduce the new awareness of what should be done to break with the miserable past.[straipsnis ir santrauka anglų kalba

The Sorrowing Child in the “City Too Busy To Hate”: the Atlanta Child Murders in Contemporary American Literature

The paper deals with the way the Atlanta Child Murders became the focus of books in different literary genres by James Baldwin, Toni Cade Bambara and Taryaki Jones. Baldwin’s The Evidence of Things Not Seen is a long publicist essay; Bambara used the form of a documentary fictionin Those Bones Are Not My Child, and Jones’ Leaving Atlanta is fiction based on individual memory. The figure of the sorrowing child who illuminates the injustices of the world divided by class, race and wealth is in the center of all three works. Thanks to the figure of the child the tensions and complexities of the adult world become conspicuous; the child acquires the role of a moral model that challenges the mores of American society

THE IMAGE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES IN CONTEMPORARY BRITISH-AMERICAN FICTION

Purpose: The article analyzes the image of Sherlock Holmes in the works of some of the contemporary authors. The great detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a major impact not only on literature but on the world culture as a whole. This image spawned a lot of works featuring similar characters or even himself long before the series became public domain, and after that point, the number of works featuring Sherlock Holmes raised drastically. Methodology: The primary method is comparative analysis; we use it to compare the original image of Sherlock Homes with later versions Result: As one would assume, the perception of the image is different from author to author and therefore is different from the original created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this article, we will analyze several works of fiction of contemporary authors (for example, Neil Gaiman and Mitch Cullen), the image of the great detective presented in then and compare it with the one from the original literature series. In conclusion we will discuss Sherlock Holmes as a modern archetype and its most prominent features. Applications: This research can be used for universities, teachers, and students. Novelty/Originality: In this research, the model of The Image of Sherlock Holmes in Contemporary British-American Fiction is presented in a comprehensive and complete manner

Identity Transformation under the Influenceof the Surroundings. Problems of Translating the Speech of Chinese Americans into Russian (On the Materials of the Novels «Typical American» and “Mona in the Promised Land” by Gish Jen)

На материале дилогии известной американской писательницы китайского происхождения Гиш Джен прослеживается трансформация национальной идентичности двух поколений китайских иммигрантов в США, их трудности на пути к ассимиляции в американском обществе, которые находят свое выражение и в их речи, что связано с разностью подходов представителей двух поколений к ценностным ориентациям и появлением гибридной личности. Дилогия затрагивает сложнейшие для иммигрантов проблемы самоидентификации и врастания в почву новой родины, нахождения в ней своего места без разрыва с исторической родиной. Статья также обращается к проблемам, которые возникают при переводе речи представителей двух поколений иммигрантов на русский язык.Chinese American writer Gish Jen’s dilogy allows to see the transformation of national identity of two generations of Chinese immigrants into the USA, their problems on the way to assimilation in US society, which find their expression in their speech. It is connected with the difference of their approach to spiritual values and the emergence of a hybrid personality. The dilogy deals with the problems of self-identification, growing in the new homeland and finding one’s own place in it without severing ties with the historical homeland. Методические основы развития материального обеспечения войск (сил) за пределами Российской Федерации

Purpose of the study. The main purpose of this research is to develop a methodological basis for material support of groups of troops (forces) on the territory of a foreign state in a military conflict.Materials and methods. The following methods are used: a systematic approach to the study and development of methodological foundations to improve the efficiency of material support of troops (forces) outside the Russian Federation; methods of economic analysis, analytical, statistical, logical, linguistic and graphical methods; applied general scientific and specific methods of substantiation of the concept: abstraction and concretization, historical and logical, as well as methods of graphic and mathematical modeling, factor analysis.Results. The technique of development of material support of group of troops (forces) operating in the territory of the foreign state in the conditions of the military conflict is developed. Factors of influence on the process of formation and management of the assortment of commercial and household support for a group of troops (forces) operating outside the Russian Federation are systematized. Exogenous and endogenous factors of formation of parameters of trade and household (sales and service) network of the divisions providing grouping of troops (forces) in the territory of the foreign state are offered. The assortment policy of divisions of material support of the contingent of troops (forces) operating in the territory of the foreign state as the systematized set of the purposes, tasks and the main directions of formation of the trade and household range planned by the management of this group and staff of logistics of Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is defined.Conclusion. Material support activities require consideration of the principles and conceptual frameworks that determine their sustainability and effectiveness. The initial stage of formation and development of system of material support of the military personnel outside the Russian Federation, dynamism of external factors of the environment of providing divisions and high degree of commercial risk (for all subjects of process of commodity circulation), demand continuous tracking or dynamic adequate decisions in the sphere of operational management of implementation of strategy of development of material support regarding formation of assortment policy.Цель исследования. Основная цель данного научного исследования заключается в том, чтобы разработать методические основы материального обеспечения группировки войск (сил) на территории иностранного государства в условиях военного конфликта.Материалы и методы. Использованы: системный подход к обоснованию и разработке методических основ, обеспечивающих повышение эффективности материального обеспечения войск (сил) за пределами Российской Федерации; методы экономического анализа, аналитические, статистические, логические, лингвистические и графические методы; применены общенаучные и специфические методы обоснования концепции: абстрагирование и конкретизация, историко-логический, а также приемы графического и математического моделирования, факторного, анализа.Результаты. Разработана Методика развития материального обеспечения группировки войск (сил), действующей на территории иностранного государства в условиях военного конфликта. Систематизированы факторы влияния на процесс формирования и управления ассортиментом торгово-бытового обеспечения группировки войск (сил), действующей за пределами Российской Федерации. Предложены экзогенные и эндогенные факторы формирования параметров торгово-бытовой (сбытовой и сервисной) сети подразделений, обеспечивающих группировку войск (сил) на территории иностранного государства. Определена ассортиментная политику подразделений материального обеспечения контингента войск (сил), действующую на территории иностранного государства, как систематизированная совокупность целей, задач и основных направлений формирования торгово-бытового ассортимента, планируемых руководством данной группировки и Штабом материально-технического обеспечения Вооруженных Сил Российской Федерации.Заключение. Деятельность по организации материального обеспечения требует учета принципов и концептуальных основ, определяющих ее устойчивость и эффективность. Начальный этап становления и развития системы материального обеспечения военнослужащих за пределами Российской Федерации, динамизм внешних факторов окружения обеспечивающих подразделений и высокая степень коммерческого риска (для всех субъектов процесса товародвижения), требуют постоянного отслеживания или динамичных адекватных решений в сфере оперативного управления реализацией стратегии развития материального обеспечения в части формирования ассортиментной политики
