Hypertensive subjects, on the other hand, were driven by fear of loss of control and showed a higher sense of feeling threatened

School Achievement and Failure: Prevention and Intervention Strategies.

School achievement and failure seem to be the result of multiple social, political and individual factors. The origins of school failure are complex and are not limited to school, because family and community risk factors can foster or inhibit the individual’s cognitive, social and emotional development. The content of this book reflects the state of the art in the research on school achievement and failure in Europe, Asia, North and South America.Frontiers Media S

The 1000 Mitoses Project : A Consensus-Based International Collaborative Study on Mitotic Figures Classification

    Get PDF
Introduction. The identification of mitotic figures is essential for the diagnosis, grading, and classification of various different tumors. Despite its importance, there is a paucity of literature reporting the consistency in interpreting mitotic figures among pathologists. This study leverages publicly accessible datasets and social media to recruit an international group of pathologists to score an image database of more than 1000 mitotic figures collectively. Materials and Methods. Pathologists were instructed to randomly select a digital slide from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets and annotate 10-20 mitotic figures within a 2 mm2 area. The first 1010 submitted mitotic figures were used to create an image dataset, with each figure transformed into an individual tile at 40x magnification. The dataset was redistributed to all pathologists to review and determine whether each tile constituted a mitotic figure. Results. Overall pathologists had a median agreement rate of 80.2% (range 42.0%-95.7%). Individual mitotic figure tiles had a median agreement rate of 87.1% and a fair inter-rater agreement across all tiles (kappa = 0.284). Mitotic figures in prometaphase had lower percentage agreement rates compared to other phases of mitosis. Conclusion. This dataset stands as the largest international consensus study for mitotic figures to date and can be utilized as a training set for future studies. The agreement range reflects a spectrum of criteria that pathologists use to decide what constitutes a mitotic figure, which may have potential implications in tumor diagnostics and clinical management.Peer reviewe

‘The Great Movement to Resist America and Assist Korea’: how Beijing sold the Korean War

    No full text
The Chinese entered the Korean War one year after the creation of the People's Republic of China. Given the considerable economic, social and political problems facing the new state after decades of foreign occupation and civil war, how did the new Communist Government of China persuade both the people and the military to intervene in a foreign war? Described as the 'Great Movement to Resist America and Assist Korea' and an opportunity to 'Beat American Arrogance', the propaganda promoted the Korean War as a chance to challenge the US presence in Asia, and project China's rise as a regional, if not a world power. More important, the propaganda indicates the war was used to strengthen the Communist Party's domestic support and legitimacy, mobilize the population around the party's agenda (especially its vision of a 'new' China), and help consolidate the party's authority in the immediate aftermath of the civil war. Focusing primarily on posters, this article chronicles the development of propaganda themes and methods against the background of first Chinese hesitation to enter the Korean War and then acceptance of a prolonged war by the end of the first year. © The Author(s)
