    Evaluation of pile bearing capacity by use of the wave equation

    The wave equation method of evaluating pile bearing capacity is investigated by using data obtained from a comprehensive pile testing program. Modifications which create a more accurate and realistic approach are made to the method proposed by previous investigators. With the use of these modifications, correlation between observed and computed results is more readily obtained. Selected pile formulas in the empirical, static, and dynamic categories are reviewed so that a direct comparison between these and the wave equation method can be made --Abstract, page ii

    Photoreactivation of Lethal Damage Induced in Hamster X Xenopus Hybrid Cells and Their Parentals by UV Light

    A85 Xenopus cells that exhibited a high level of photoreactivation (PR) and V79B2 hamster cells that exhibited little PR were fused to produce the V79B2 x A85 cell line — a hybrid line which possessed a relatively stable karyotype, with most cells containing the entire V79B2 and A85 genomes. UV and UV plus PR fluence-survival relations were then determined and compared for the hybrid and parental lines in a first attempt to elucidate interactions of the parental PR mechanisms in the hybrid. It was anticipated that the A85 genome in the hybrid would produce PR enzyme in sufficient concentration and of such a nature as to efficiently PR UV-induced lethal damage in both A85 and V79B2 DNA, and little difference would be observed in the levels of PR exhibited by the V79B2 x A85 and A85 lines. To the contrary, the level of PR observed for the hybrid was substantially below that observed for the A85 line. To assist in the interpretation of this unexpected observation, three additional preliminary studies were carried out: 1) Comparison of the optimum PR schemes for the A85 and hybrid lines, 2) examination of relations between the PR and dark UV repair mechanisms possessed by these lines, and 3) comparison of the levels of PR of chromatid deletions induced by UV in selected V79B2 and A85 chromosomes of the hybrid. The results suggested that the relatively low level of PR manifested by the hybrid cells was a consequence of their inability to efficiently PR pyrimidine dimers induced by UV in V79B2 DNA

    Fulfilling Community Health Assessment Requirements: Lessons Learned From Facilitating State-Wide Community Health Forums

    Background: A prerequisite for National Public Health Accreditation is completion of a Community Health Assessment (CHA) that presents an exhaustive profile of the population served by a particular public health agency. Methods: The Georgia Department of Public Health (GA DPH) contracted with the Center for Public Health Practice and Research at Georgia Southern University to facilitate five state-wide community health forums. Results: Evaluation of the forums yielded qualitative data illustrating current challenges faced by Georgians, as well as assets that could be leveraged to improve health status. Conclusion: Lessons learned from these state-wide community health forums can be applied to improve the overall process of gathering data for a comprehensive CHA throughout Georgia or other areas interested in pursuing public health agency accreditation

    Environmental Effects on Oxygen Isotope Enrichment of Leaf Water in Cotton Leaves

    The oxygen isotope enrichment of bulk leaf water (Db) was measured in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) leaves to test the Craig- Gordon and Farquhar-Gan models under different environmental conditions. Db increased with increasing leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (VPd) as an overall result of the responses to the ratio of ambient to intercellular vapor pressures (ea/ei) and to stomatal conductance (gs). The oxygen isotope enrichment of lamina water relative to source water ðD1Þ; which increased with increasing VPd, was estimated by mass balance between less enriched water in primary veins and enriched water in the leaf. The Craig-Gordon model overestimated Db (and D1Þ; as expected. Such discrepancies increased with increase in transpiration rate (E), supporting the Farquhar-Gan model, which gave reasonable predictions of Db and D1 with an L of 7.9 mm, much less than the total radial effective length Lr of 43 mm. The fitted values of L for D1 of individual leaves showed little dependence on VPd and temperature, supporting the assumption that the Farquhar-Gan formulation is relevant and useful in describing leaf water isotopic enrichment

    The association between major depressive disorder, use of antidepressants and bone mineral density (BMD) in men.

    OBJECTIVE: Both depression and use of antidepressants have been negatively associated with bone mineral density (BMD) but mainly in studies among postmenopausal women. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate these relationships in men. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2011, 928 men (aged 24-98 years) from the Geelong Osteoporosis Study completed a comprehensive questionnaire, clinical measurements and had BMD assessments at the forearm, spine, total hip and total body. Major depressive disorder (MDD) was identified using a structured clinical interview (SCID-I/NP). The cross-sectional associations between BMD and both MDD and antidepressant use were analyzed using multivariable linear regression. RESULTS: Of the study population, 84 (9.1%) men had a single MDD episode, 50 (5.4%) had recurrent episodes and 65 (7.0%) were using antidepressants at the time of assessment. Following adjustments, recurrent MDD was associated with lower BMD at the forearm and total body (-6.5%, P=0.033 and -2.5%, P=0.033, respectively compared to men with no history of MDD), while single MDD episodes were associated with higher BMD at the total hip (+3.4%, P=0.030). Antidepressant use was associated with lower BMD only in lower-weight men (<75-110 kg depending on bone site). CONCLUSIONS: Both depression and use of antidepressants should be taken into account as possible risk factors for osteoporosis in men

    Nanoporous aluminosilicate catalyzed Friedel–Crafts alkylation reactions of indoles with aldehydes and acetals

    Nanoporous aluminosilicate materials efficiently catalyze Friedel-Crafts reactions of indoles to produce bisindolylalkane products. These reactions proceed rapidly and in high yields when acetals are used in place of the more commonly used carbonyl reagents. It is possible to capitalise on the large difference in the rates of reaction observed with aldehydes and acetals to develop a tandem acetalization-Friedel-Crafts protocol in which the acetal is generated in situ and undergoes subsequent reaction. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    The prevalence of long COVID in people with diabetes mellitus–evidence from a UK cohort

    Background: It was apparent from the early phase of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) pandemic that a multi-system syndrome can develop in the weeks following a COVID-19 infection, now referred to as Long COVID. Given that people living with diabetes are at increased risk of hospital admission/poor outcomes following COVID-19 infection we hypothesised that they may also be more susceptible to developing Long COVID. We describe here the prevalence of Long COVID in people living with diabetes when compared to matched controls in a Northwest UK population. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of people who had a recorded diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D) who were alive on 1st January 2020 and who had a proven COVID-19 infection. We used electronic health record data from the Greater Manchester Care Record collected from 1st January 2020 to 16th September 2023, we determined the prevalence of Long COVID in people with T1D and T2D vs matched individuals without diabetes (non-DM). Findings: There were 3087 T1D individuals with 14,077 non-diabetes controls and 3087 T2D individuals with 14,077 non-diabetes controls and 29,700 T2D individuals vs 119,951 controls. For T1D, there was a lower proportion of Long COVID diagnosis and/or referral to a Long COVID service at 0.33% vs 0.48% for matched controls. The prevalence of Long COVID In T2D individuals was 0.53% vs 1:3 matched controls 0.54%. For T2D, there were differences by sex in the prevalence of Long COVID in comparison with 1:3 matched controls. For Long COVID between males with T2D and their matched controls, the prevalence was lower in matched controls at 0.46%.vs 0.54% (0.008). When considering the prevalence of LC between females with T2D and their matched controls, the prevalence was higher in matched controls at 0.61% vs 0.53% (0.007). The prevalence of Long COVID in males with T2D vs females was not different. T2D patients at older vs younger age were at reduced risk of developing Long COVID (OR 0.994 [95% CI) [0.989, 0.999]). For females there was a minor increase of risk (OR 1.179, 95% CI [1.002, 1.387]). Presence of a higher body mass index (BMI) was also associated an increased risk of developing Long COVID (OR 1.013, 95% CI [1.001, 1.026]). The estimated general population prevalence of Long COVID based on general practice coding (not self-reported) of this diagnosis was 0.5% of people with a prior acute COVID-19 diagnosis. Interpretation: Recorded Long COVID was more prevalent in men with T2D than in matched non-T2D controls with the opposite seen for T2D women, with recorded Long COVID rates being similar for T2D men and women. Younger age, female sex and higher BMI were all associated with a greater likelihood of developing Long COVID when taken as individual variables. There remains an imperative for continuing awareness of Long COVID as a differential diagnosis for multi-system symptomatic presentation in the context of a previous acute COVID-19 infection.
