On Global Conservation Laws at Null Infinity
The ``standard'' expressions for total energy, linear momentum and also
angular momentum of asymptotically flat Bondi metrics at null infinity are also
obtained from differential conservation laws on asymptotically flat
backgrounds, derived from a quadratic Lagrangian density by methods currently
used in classical field theory. It is thus a matter of taste and commodity to
use or not to use a reference spacetime in defining these globally conserved
quantities. Backgrounds lead to N\oe ther conserved currents; the use of
backgrounds is in line with classical views on conservation laws. Moreover, the
conserved quantities are in principle explicitly related to the sources of
gravity through Einstein's equations, while standard definitions are not. The
relations depend, however, on a rule for mapping spacetimes on backgrounds
A UV LED-based fast-pulsed photoelectron source for time-of-flight studies
We report on spectroscopy and time-of-flight measurements using an 18 keV
fast-pulsed photoelectron source of adjustable intensity, ranging from single
photoelectrons per pulse to 5 photoelectrons per microsecond at pulse
repetition rates of up to 10 kHz. Short pulses between 40 ns and 40
microseconds in length were produced by switching light emitting diodes with
central output wavelengths of 265 nm and 257 nm, in the deep ultraviolet (or
UV-C) regime, at kHz frequencies. Such photoelectron sources can be useful
calibration devices for testing the properties of high-resolution electrostatic
spectrometers, like the ones used in current neutrino mass searches.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Ferromagnetic resonances in single-crystal yttrium iron garnet nanofilms fabricated by metal-organic decomposition
Tunable microwave and millimeter wave oscillators and bandpass filters with ultra-low phase noise play a critical role in electronic devices, including wireless communication, microelectronics, and quantum computing. Magnetic materials, such as yttrium iron garnet (YIG), possess ultra-low phase noise and a ferromagnetic resonance tunable up to tens of gigahertz. Here, we report structural and magnetic properties of single-crystal 60 and 130 nm-thick YIG films prepared by metal-organic decomposition epitaxy. These films, consisting of multiple homoepitaxially grown monolayers, are atomically flat and possess magnetic properties similar to those grown with liquid-phase epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, and sputtering. Our approach does not involve expensive high-vacuum deposition systems and is a true low-cost alternative to current commercial techniques that have the potential to transform the industry
Quasi-Local Gravitational Energy
A dynamically preferred quasi-local definition of gravitational energy is
given in terms of the Hamiltonian of a `2+2' formulation of general relativity.
The energy is well-defined for any compact orientable spatial 2-surface, and
depends on the fundamental forms only. The energy is zero for any surface in
flat spacetime, and reduces to the Hawking mass in the absence of shear and
twist. For asymptotically flat spacetimes, the energy tends to the Bondi mass
at null infinity and the \ADM mass at spatial infinity, taking the limit along
a foliation parametrised by area radius. The energy is calculated for the
Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstr\"om and Robertson-Walker solutions, and for
plane waves and colliding plane waves. Energy inequalities are discussed, and
for static black holes the irreducible mass is obtained on the horizon.
Criteria for an adequate definition of quasi-local energy are discussed.Comment: 16 page

Spontaneous fluctuations in a magnetic Fe/Gd skyrmion lattice
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that exhibit classical or quantum quasiparticle behavior. A substantial amount of research has occurred in this field, both because of their unique electromagnetic properties and potential application for future nonvolatile memory storage applications, as well as fundamental questions on their topology and unique magnetic phases. Here, we investigate the fluctuation properties of a magnetic Fe/Gd skyrmion lattice, using short-pulsed x rays. We first measure spontaneous fluctuations of the skyrmion lattice phase and find an inherent, collective mode showing an underdamped oscillation with a relaxation of a couple of nanoseconds. Further observations track the response towards the continuous phase transition and a critical-like slowing down of fluctuations is observed well before the critical point. These results suggest that the skyrmion lattice phase never fully freezes into a static crystal. This constant state of fluctuation indicates that the physics of topological magnetic phases may have more in common with high-temperature superconductors with disorder
New cellular tools reveal complex epithelial–mesenchymal interactions in hepatocarcinogenesis
To enable detailed analyses of cell interactions in tumour development, new epithelial and mesenchymal cell lines were established from human hepatocellular carcinoma by spontaneous outgrowth in culture. We obtained several hepatocarcinoma (HCC)-, B-lymphoblastoid (BLC)-, and myofibroblastoid (MF)-lines from seven cases. In-depth characterisation included cell kinetics, genotype, tumourigenicity, expression of cell-type specific markers, and proteome patterns. Many functions of the cells of origin were found to be preserved. We studied the impact of the mesenchymal lines on hepatocarcinogenesis by in vitro assays. BLC- and MF-supernatants strongly increased the DNA replication of premalignant hepatocytes. The stimulation by MF-lines was mainly attributed to HGF secretion. In HCC-cells, MF-supernatant had only minor effects on cell growth but enhanced migration. MF-lines also stimulated neoangiogenesis through vEGF release. BLC-supernatant dramatically induced death of HCC-cells, which could be largely abrogated by preincubating the supernatant with TNFβ-antiserum. Thus, the new cell lines reveal stage-specific stimulatory and inhibitory interactions between mesenchymal and epithelial tumour cells. In conclusion, the new cell lines provide unique tools to analyse essential components of the complex interplay between the microenvironment and the developing liver cancer, and to identify factors affecting proliferation, migration and death of tumour cells, neoangiogenesis, and outgrowth of additional malignancy
Simultaneous control of magnetic topologies for reconfigurable vortex arrays
The topological spin textures in magnetic vortices in confined magnetic elements offer a platform for understanding the fundamental physics of nanoscale spin behavior and the potential of harnessing their unique spin structures for advanced magnetic technologies. For magnetic vortices to be practical, an effective reconfigurability of the two topologies of magnetic vortices, that is, the circularity and the polarity, is an essential prerequisite. The reconfiguration issue is highly relevant to the question of whether both circularity and polarity are reliably and efficiently controllable. In this work, we report the first direct observation of simultaneous control of both circularity and polarity by the sole application of an in-plane magnetic field to arrays of asymmetrically shaped permalloy disks. Our investigation demonstrates that a high degree of reliability for control of both topologies can be achieved by tailoring the geometry of the disk arrays. We also propose a new approach to control the vortex structures by manipulating the effect of the stray field on the dynamics of vortex creation. The current study is expected to facilitate complete and effective reconfiguration of magnetic vortex structures, thereby enhancing the prospects for technological applications of magnetic vortices.ope
