Differential equations describing the distribution of current densities in the chamber volume are obtained.     Correlations for pairs of periodic trajectories for open billiards

    In this paper we prove two asymptotic estimates for pairs of closed trajectories for open billiards similar to those established by Pollicott and Sharp for closed geodesics on negatively curved compact surfaces. The first of these estimates holds for general open billiards in any dimension. The more intricate second estimate is established for open billiards satisfying the so called Dolgopyat type estimates. This class of billiards includes all open billiards in the plane and open billiards in RN,N≄3\R^N, N \geq 3 satisfying some additional conditions

    Fabrication of salt–hydrogel marbles and hollow-shell microcapsules by an aerosol gelation technique

    We designed a new method for preparation of liquid marbles by using hydrophilic particles. Salt–hydrogel marbles were prepared by atomising droplets of hydrogel solution in a cold air column followed by rolling of the collected hydrogel microbeads in a bed of micrometre sized salt particles. Evaporation of the water from the resulting salt marbles with a hydrogel core yielded hollow-shell salt microcapsules. The method is not limited to hydrophilic particles and could potentially be also applied to particles of other materials, such as graphite, carbon black, silica and others. The structure and morphology of the salt–hydrogel marbles were analysed by SEM and their particle size distributions were measured. We also tested the dissolution times of the dried salt marbles and compared them with those of table salt samples under the same conditions. The high accessible surface area of the shell of salt microcrystals allows a faster initial release of salt from the hollow-shell salt capsules upon their dissolution in water than from the same amount of table salt. The results suggest that such hollow-shell particles could find applications as a table salt substitute in dry food products and salt seasoning formulations with reduced salt content without the loss of saltiness

    Photometric and spectroscopic variability of the FUor star V582 Aurigae

    We carried out BVRI CCD photometric observations in the field of V582 Aur from 2009 August to 2013 February. We acquired high-, medium-, and low-resolution spectroscopy of V582 Aur during this period. To study the pre-outburst variability of the target and construct its historical light curve, we searched for archival observations in photographic plate collections. Both CCD and photographic observations were analyzed using a sequence of 14 stars in the field of V582 Aur calibrated in BVRI. The pre-outburst photographic observations of V582 Aur show low-amplitude light variations typical of T Tauri stars. Archival photographic observations indicate that the increase in brightness began in late 1984 or early 1985 and the star reached the maximum level of brightness at 1986 January. The spectral type of V582 Aur can be defined as G0I with strong P Cyg profiles of H alpha and Na I D lines, which are typical of FU Orionis objects. Our BVRI photometric observations show large amplitude variations V~2.8 mag. during the 3.5 year period of observations. Most of the time, however, the star remains in a state close to the maximum brightness. The deepest drop in brightness was observed in the spring of 2012, when the brightness of the star fell to a level close to the pre-outburst. The multicolor photometric data show a color reversal during the minimum in brightness, which is typical of UX Ori variables. The corresponding spectral observations show strong variability in the profiles and intensities of the spectral lines (especially H alpha), which indicate significant changes in the accretion rate. On the basis of photometric monitoring performed over the past three years, the spectral properties of the maximal light, and the shape of the long-term light curve, we confirm the affiliation of V582 Aur to the group of FU Orionis objects.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    The elementary processes taking place in the formation of charged particles and their flow in parallel-plane, cylindrical and spherical ionization chambers are considered. On the basis of particles and charges balance a differential equation describing the distribution of current densities in the ionization chamber volume is obtained.     Linking medical faculty stress/burnout to willingness to implement medical school curriculum change: a preliminary investigation

    Rationale, aims and objectivesBalancing administrative demands from the medical school while providing patient support and seeking academic advancement can cause personal hardship that ranges from high stress to clinically recognizable conditions such as burnout. Regarding the importance of clinical faculties’ burnout and its effects on different aspects of their professional career, this study was conducted and aimed to evaluate the relationship between willingness to change teaching approaches as characterized by a modified stage‐of‐change model and measures of stress and burnout.MethodsThis descriptive analytic study was conducted on 143 clinical faculty members of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Participants were asked to complete three questionnaires: a modified stages of change questionnaire the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the General Health Questionnaire. Data were analysed by SPSS: 16 using non‐parametric statistical tests such as multiple regression and ICC (intra‐class coefficient) and Spearman correlation coefficient test.ResultA significant relationship was found between faculty members’ readiness to change teaching approaches and the subscales of occupational burnout. Specifically, participants with low occupational burnout were more likely to be in the action stage, while those with high burnout were in the attitude or intention stage, which could be understood as not being ready to implement change. There was no significant correlation between general health scores and stage of change. ConclusionsWe found it feasible to measure stages of change as well as stress/burnout in academic doctors. Occupational burnout directly reduces the readiness to change.     Step Bunching with Alternation of Structural Parameters

    By taking account of the alternation of structural parameters, we study bunching of impermeable steps induced by drift of adatoms on a vicinal face of Si(001). With the alternation of diffusion coefficient, the step bunching occurs irrespective of the direction of the drift if the step distance is large. Like the bunching of permeable steps, the type of large terraces is determined by the drift direction. With step-down drift, step bunches grows faster than those with step-up drift. The ratio of the growth rates is larger than the ratio of the diffusion coefficients. Evaporation of adatoms, which does not cause the step bunching, decreases the difference. If only the alternation of kinetic coefficient is taken into account, the step bunching occurs with step-down drift. In an early stage, the initial fluctuation of the step distance determines the type of large terraces, but in a late stage, the type of large terraces is opposite to the case of alternating diffusion coefficient.Comment: 8pages, 16 figure

    On the interpretation of results from small punch creep tests

    The small punch creep testing method is highly complex and involves interactions between a number of non-linear processes. The deformed shapes that are produced from such tests are related to the punch and specimen dimensions and to the elastic, plastic, and creep behaviour of the test material, under contact and large deformation conditions, at elevated temperature. Owing to its complex nature, it is difficult to interpret the small punch test creep data in relation to the corresponding uniaxial creep behaviour of the material. One of the aims of this paper is to identify the important characteristics of the creep deformation resulting from ‘localized’ deformations and from the ‘overall’ deformation of the specimen. Following this, the results of approximate analytical and detailed finite element analyses of small punch tests are investigated. It is shown that the regions of the uniaxial creep test curves dominated by primary, secondary, and tertiary creep are not those that are immediately apparent from the displacement versus time records produced during a small punch test. On the basis of the interpretation of the finite element results presented, a method based on a reference stress approach is proposed for interpreting the results of small punch test experimental data. Future work planned for the interpretation of small punch tests data is briefly addressed

    Androgenic response of Triticum durum-Dasypyrum villosum amphidiploids and their parental forms

    Wide hybridization in cereal crops is one of the most efficient tools for the enrichment of genetic variability and addressing a number of breeding problems related to resistance and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, a large number of amphidiploids between species possessing different morphological, genetic and physiological properties have been developed. One of the most valuable species with regard to the possibilities for introducing valuable traits and properties into wheat species is the wild Dasypyrum villosum. With the aim to study the androgenic response of the Triticum durum-D. villosum amphidiploids, two accessions and their parental forms – the durum wheat cultivars Gergana and Argonavt and a landrace of the D. villosum – were studied. The following parameters were determined: callus induction, plant regeneration, yield of albino and green regenerants. It was found that the callus induction of the two studied amphidiploids differed significantly from that of the parental forms (2.1–7.2 %), being significantly higher, 30.7 and 16.5 %, respectively. Regardless of the difference in callus induction, the amphidiploids did not significantly differ from the parental forms in their regeneration ability. The yield of albino plants exceeded the yield of green regenerants and followed the tendency observed in callus induction. Green plants were found only in the amphidiploid Gergana-D. villosum and in the parental form durum wheat Gergana. Plants were regenerated from the species D. villosum, although they were only albinos, showing its good responsiveness to anther culture. The established characteristics of the amphidiploids and their parental forms make their practical use highly valuable for the improvement of different types of cereal crops
