    The stability of a trailing-line vortex in compressible flow

    We consider the inviscid stability of the Batchelor (1964) vortex in a compressible flow. The problem is tackled numerically and also asymptotically, in the limit of large (aximuthal and streamwise) wavenumbers, together with large Mach numbers. The nature of the solution passes through different regimes as the Mach number increases, relative to the wavenumbers. At very high wavenumbers and Mach numbers, the mode which is present in the incompressible case ceases to be unstable, while new 'center mode' forms, whose stability characteristics, are determined primarily by conditions close to the vortex axis. We find that generally the flow becomes less unstable as the Mach number increases, and that the regime of instability appears generally confined to disturbances in a direction counter to the direction of the rotation of the swirl of the vortex.     Trade-offs between conflicting animal welfare concerns and cow replacement strategy in out-wintering Scottish suckler herds

    Since decoupling of the CAP, many Scottish suckler cow farms are facing financial difficulties. In response, many farmers are out-wintering extensively managed suckler cows to minimise production costs. These systems are of animal welfare concern. A range of trade-offs between animal welfare indicators and between animal welfare and farm profitability can be identified. A Dynamic Programming (DP) model was developed to study these trade-offs. Two herds were modelled assuming their feeding regimes were either low (LHERD) or high (HHERD). The objective of the DP was to maximise the expected net margin from a current cow and its successors over an infinite time horizon. Preliminary results showed that the rate of voluntary culling was higher in HHERD than in LHERD. Animals in HHERD had shorter life expectancy. The expected net present value was 58% lower in LHERD than HHERD (-Ā£41.5 and -Ā£24.3 respectively). These results suggest a heavier culling rate and shorter longevity for animals in HHERD that compromises animal welfare. Also HHERD had a greater implied stocking density than LHERD. This increase of the cowsā€™ population may adversely affect the environment.     Simulation, modelling and development of the metris RCA

    In partnership with Metris UK we discuss the utilisation of modelling and simulation methods in the development of a revolutionary 7-axis Robot CMM Arm (RCA). An offline virtual model is described, facilitating pre-emptive collision avoidance and assessment of optimal placement of the RCA relative to scan specimens. Workspace accessibility of the RCA is examined under a range of geometrical assumptions and we discuss the effects of arbitrary offsets resulting from manufacturing tolerances. Degeneracy is identified in the number of ways a given pose may be attained and it is demonstrated how a simplified model may be exploited to solve the inverse kinematics problem of finding the ā€œcorrectā€ set of joint angles. We demonstrate how the seventh axis may be utilised to avoid obstacles or otherwise awkward poses, giving the unit greater dexterity than traditional CMMs. The results of finite element analysis and static force modelling on the RCA are presented which provide an estimate of the forces exerted on the internal measurement arm in a range of poses

    Developing Image Processing Meta-Algorithms with Data Mining of Multiple Metrics

    People often use multiple metrics in image processing, but here we take a novel approach of mining the values of batteries of metrics on image processing results. We present a case for extending image processing methods to incorporate automated mining of multiple image metric values. Here by a metric we mean any image similarity or distance measure, and in this paper we consider intensity-based and statistical image measures and focus on registration as an image processing problem. We show how it is possible to develop meta-algorithms that evaluate different image processing results with a number of different metrics and mine the results in an automated fashion so as to select the best results. We show that the mining of multiple metrics offers a variety of potential benefits for many image processing problems, including improved robustness and validation

    Identifying and prioritizing opportunities for improving efficiency on the farm: holistic metrics and benchmarking with Data Envelopment Analysis

    Efficiency benchmarking is a well-established way of measuring and improving farm performance. An increasingly popular efficiency benchmarking tool within agricultural research is Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). However, the literature currently lacks sufficient demonstration of how DEA could be tuned to the needs of the farm advisor/extension officer, rather than of the researcher. Also, the literature is flooded with DEA terminology that may discourage the non-academic practitioner from adopting DEA. This paper aims at making DEA more accessible to farm consultants/extension officers by explaining the method step-by-step, visually and with minimal use of specialised terminology and mathematics. Then, DEAā€™s potential for identifying cost-reducing and profit-making opportunities for farmers is demonstrated with a series of examples drawn from commercial UK dairy farm data. Finally, three DEA methods for studying efficiency change and trends over time are also presented. Main challenges are discussed (e.g. data availability), as well as ideas for extending DEAā€™s applicability in the agricultural industry, such as the use of carbon footprints and other farm sustainability indicators in DEA analyses

    Characteristics, accuracy and reverification of robotised articulated arm CMMs

    VDI article 2617 specifies characteristics to describe the accuracy of articulated arm coordinate measuring machines (AACMMs) and outlines procedures for checking them. However the VDI prescription was written with a former generation of machines in mind: manual arms exploiting traditional touch probe technologies. Recent advances in metrology have given rise to noncontact laser scanning tools and robotic automation of articulated arms ā€“ technologies which are not adequately characterised using the VDI specification. In this paper we examine the ā€œguidelinesā€ presented in VDI 2617, finding many of them to be ambiguous and open to interpretation, with some tests appearing even to be optional. The engineer is left significant flexibility in the execution of the test procedures and the manufacturer is free to specify many of the test parameters. Such flexibility renders the VDI tests of limited value and the results can be misleading. We illustrate, with examples using the Nikon RCA, how a liberal interpretation of the VDI guidelines can significantly improve accuracy characterisation and suggest ways in which to mitigate this problem. We propose a series of stringent tests and revised definitions, in the same vein as VDI 2617 and similar US standards, to clarify the accuracy characterisation process. The revised methodology includes modified acceptance and reverification tests which aim to accommodate emerging technologies, laser scanning devices in particular, while maintaining the spirit of the existing and established standards. We seek to supply robust re-definitions for the accepted terms ā€œzero pointā€ and ā€œuseful arm lengthā€, pre-supposing nothing about the geometry of the measuring device. We also identify a source of error unique to robotised AACMMs employing laser scanners ā€“ the forward-reverse pass error. We show how eliminating this error significantly improves the repeatability of a device and propose a novel approach to the testing of probing error based on statistical uncertainty

    Risk Assessment Challenges in the Ares I Upper Stage

    NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is currently at work developing hardware and systems for the Ares I rocket that will send future astronauts into orbit. Built on cutting-edge launch technologies, evolved powerful Apollo and Space Shuttle propulsion elements, and decades of NASA spaceflight experience, Ares I is the essential core of a safe, reliable, cost-effective space transportation system -- one that will carry crewed missions back to the moon, on to Mars and out into the solar system. Ares I is an in-line, two-stage rocket configuration topped by the Orion crew vehicle and its launch abort system. In addition to the vehicle's primary mission -carrying crews of four to six astronauts to Earth orbit --Ares I may also use its 25-ton payload capacity to deliver resources and supplies to the International Space Station, or to "park" payloads in orbit for retrieval by other spacecraft bound for the moon or other destinations. Crew transportation to the International Space Station is planned to begin no later than 2014. The first lunar excursion is scheduled for the 2020 timeframe.     Effect of statins on atrial fibrillation: collaborative meta-analysis of published and unpublished evidence from randomised controlled trials

    Objective To examine whether statins can reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation. Design Meta-analysis of published and unpublished results from larger scale statin trials, with comparison of the findings against the published results from smaller scale or shorter duration studies. Data sources Medline, Embase, and Cochrane's CENTRAL up to October 2010. Unpublished data from longer term trials were obtained through contact with investigators. Study selection Randomised controlled trials comparing statin with no statin or comparing high dose versus standard dose statin; all longer term trials had at least 100 participants and at least six months' follow-up. Results In published data from 13 short term trials (4414 randomised patients, 659 events), statin treatment seemed to reduce the odds of an episode of atrial fibrillation by 39% (odds ratio 0.61, 95% confidence interval 0.51 to 0.74; P<0.001), but there was significant heterogeneity (P<0.001) between the trials. In contrast, among 22 longer term and mostly larger trials of statin versus control (105 791 randomised patients, 2535 events), statin treatment was not associated with a significant reduction in atrial fibrillation (0.95, 0.88 to 1.03; P=0.24) (P<0.001 for test of difference between the two sets of trials). Seven longer term trials of more intensive versus standard statin regimens (28 964 randomised patients and 1419 events) also showed no evidence of a reduction in the risk of atrial fibrillation (1.00, 0.90 to 1.12; P=0.99). Conclusions The suggested beneficial effect of statins on atrial fibrillation from published shorter term studies is not supported by a comprehensive review of published and unpublished evidence from larger scale trials

    Impacts of labour on interactions between economics and animal welfare in extensive sheep farms

    This study quantified interactions between animal welfare and farm profitability in British extensive sheep farming systems. Qualitative welfare assessment methodology was used to assess welfare from the animal's perspective in 20 commercial extensive sheep farms and to estimate labour demand for welfare, based on the assessed welfare scores using data collected from farm inventories. The estimated labour demand was then used as a coefficient in a linear program based model to establish the gross margin maximising farm management strategy for given farm situations, subject to constraints that reflected current resource limitations including labour supply. Regression analysis showed a significant relationship between the qualitative welfare assessment scores and labour supply on the inventoried farms but there was no significant relationship between current gross margin and assessed welfare scores. However, to meet the labour demand of the best welfare score, a reduction in flock size and in the average maximum farm gross margin was often required. These findings supported the hypothesis that trade-offs between animal welfare and farm profitability are necessary in providing maximum animal welfare via on-farm labour and sustainable British extensive sheep farming systems.Sheep, Labour, Animal Welfare, Linear Programme, Livestock Production/Industries, C6, Q10, Q19, Q57,

    Incremental Grid-like Layout Using Soft and Hard Constraints

    We explore various techniques to incorporate grid-like layout conventions into a force-directed, constraint-based graph layout framework. In doing so we are able to provide high-quality layout---with predominantly axis-aligned edges---that is more flexible than previous grid-like layout methods and which can capture layout conventions in notations such as SBGN (Systems Biology Graphical Notation). Furthermore, the layout is easily able to respect user-defined constraints and adapt to interaction in online systems and diagram editors such as Dunnart.Comment: Accepted to Graph Drawing 201
